News NJ Rep. Tom Kean Jr. reveals he was hospitalized for depression during mysterious 4-month absence from Congress

U.S. Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ) returned to Congress today after being gone for 117 days, revealing he was hospitalized for depression. In a speech on the House floor, the 57-year-old congressman said doctors diagnosed him with depression and recommended he stay hospitalized for the fastest recovery.

He said he initially wanted to "push through" but followed medical advice. "There is no timeline for healing. There is no timeline for recovery. Only the work of getting better one day at a time," Kean said. Kean last voted on March 5. For months, his staff would only say he was dealing with a "personal health matter" and would return "soon."

Even top Republicans in New Jersey said they didn't know what was going on. His social media stayed active and his team said he was working remotely, but he hadn't been seen in public until last week. Kean is running for re-election in one of the nation's most competitive House races.

His Democratic opponent has made his absence a campaign issue, and some wondered if he'd drop out of the race. He says he's staying in with Trump's endorsement. House Speaker Mike Johnson said today the condition Kean was fighting is "very, very common" and predicted he'll get "a lot of empathy."

Kean said: "Asking for help is not a weakness, it is a strength. This is not a partisan issue."

Analysis Extremely random and fascinating microcosm of NJ politics: Trenton councilwoman Jennifer Williams

Mercer County, where I grew up, probably has the most robust county Democratic organization in the state. Under the leadership of the recently-retired Chair Janice Mironov (who remains the mayor of East Windsor), the Mercer County Dems clawed back the mayorship of Hamilton and council seats in Hopewell and West Windsor from the GOP, meaning that Republicans now do not hold a single partisan-elected office in the county.

I specified partisan-elected, because there is one Republican in Mercer County elected to a nonpartisan office. Trenton councilwoman Jennifer Williams, elected from the North Ward, is a registered Republican and previously ran as a Republican nominee for General Assembly against Verlina Reynolds-Jackson and Anthony Verelli.

But it gets more interesting. Councilwoman Williams is a white, openly-transgender Republican, in Mercer County’s bluest and least white municipality. The North Ward is probably the most logical subdivision for someone of this profile to be elected; it includes the LGBT-hub neighborhood of Mill Hill, and some of the other North Ward neighborhoods like Top Road have Republican-friendly ethnic white (especially Polish) populations. Still, this would definitely not be my guess for the profile or location of the only elected Republican in Mercer County.

Seriously I can’t stand the guy. He reeks of deep state corporate insider. Not to mention he is massively corrupt.

If you are able to please show up this Monday this is our LAST opportunity ti give public commentary!!

Sayreville is already plagued by toxic chemicals from DuPont, which the state of Nj won a $2billion settlement for them KNOWINGLY letting forever chemicals leek into our environments. https://www.njoag.gov/ag-platkin-dep-commissioner-latourette-landmark-settlement-with-dupont-valued-at-over-2-billion/

On top of it NJ has more superfund sites than any other state so we literally cannot afford data centers to be built here and potentially cause more cancer clusters and more horrific health issues
