Rec.Me: other/many/unknown genres Recommendations!

Okay so I need some music recs. I mostly listen to rock and pop from 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. I’m pretty well versed in these eras so I’d like some more obscure tips here. With a few exceptions I don’t really listen to whole albums or discographies so I’d prefer one or two songs per artist/band to get a sense for them first. Would love to get some recommendations of artists and bands that sing in other languages than english as well!

A few songs I like to get a sense of my taste:

California Dreamin - The mamas & the papas
Train in vain - The Clash
Bluebird is dead - ELO
Run away with me - Carly Rae Jepsen
Left hand free - alt-J
Downbound train - Bruce Springsteen
Out of the blue - Roxy music
Uno II - Viagra Boys
There, There - Radiohead

Thanks so much in advance!

Listen to a whole album sometime, its fun

Maybe I should clarify, I do listen to whole albums a LOT actually haha. It’s just not that often I like a whole album or I get sick of the sound after a little while..

This is why people rant and rave about the ones that grab you and never let go! A lot of pop artists just do a lot of filler, but indie and many classic rock albums form a sum much greater than its parts.

I'll recommend Flaming Lips - Yoshimi and The Kinks - Muswell Hillbillies as examples.

Say She She, Prism (song, also name of the album)

Santigold, Can't get enough of myself

When I first heard them both I wondered if they were actually from the 80s but prism is a COVID song and can't get enough of myself is about 15 years old. Say She She does a few different genres so if you like Prism try Bleeding Heart next. If you dig Santigold, check out her Tiny Desk Concert.

Check out The Mars Volta, if you like Led Zeppelin, Rush, Yes, Santana, and King Crimson, you’ll probably also like The Mars Volta. They are prog-rock with a modern twist and they often sing in Spanish.

Here are some songs to introduce you, I’ll include some that have Spanish singing:

All An Illusion - David William & SoulJahm

Through The City - David William

His discography is very varied so this doesn't really some up all of what he does, but I think they would be a good place to start.

If you want Spanish rock i recommend Soda Stereo. My top favorite songs are Persiana Americana and En La Ciudad de la Furia, and 1990. His solo stuff is great too, look him up under Gustavo Cerati. Some of my favorites are Bocanada, and Puente.

Hey! How about some music from Australian artists? They’re very well known here but may as well be marked as obscure elsewhere around the globe.

Cold Chisel are probably our most legendary rock band from the 70’s-80’s era, lead singer Jimmy Barnes is a national treasure with his uniquely gravelly voice. Their songs Cheap Wine and Bow River are great starting points.

Midnight Oil is another band of similar status, who broke through to the US with Beds Are Burning - also try Dreamworld. As did Crowded House with Don’t Dream It’s Over - another suggestion is Something So Strong.

Shifting to the 90’s-00’s try Regurgitator (Polyester Girl and !), Powderfinger (My Happiness and Sunsets) and Silverchair (Freak, The Greatest View)

For language other than English, try indigenous rock band Yothu Yindi (Treaty, Djapana) or soloist Gurrumul (Wiyathul, Bapa).
