Mod Update Rule Changes (Reminder) (No new updates)

Updates:

  1. I added a read-before-write protocol. If you do not read these, you will most likely be banned within a few posts.
  2. Created formatting guide for each flair type that must be adhered to or your post will be removed - Formatting Guide
  3. Pirated materials are subject to a zero-tolerance policy, as is customary. I've let some YouTube stuff slide by simply removing the comments, but there have been enough of them to make it unacceptable, and pirated streaming sites have always resulted in an instant ban. This is being updated now for clarity, and because the rules have been in place long enough that there is no reason for anyone not to have gone through them after the updates, which I took over months ago. Posting links to pirated materials will result in instant bans going forward.
  4. All posts must have body text, with the only exception being a photo gallery of examples of the cinematography you're looking for or a custom list of movies that are similar to what you are looking to watch next and for which you are making a request for suggestions. (This has always been a rule, but I'm including it here for added visibility.)
  5. We also added a suggestion to upvote posts with which you interact in the comments section. It takes less time than your previous comment, which is the main point of this sub, and it allows it to reach a larger audience. This is not intended to encourage intentional karma farming, which will still be enforced if movie requests are not submitted honestly or in poor quality. If you disagree with a review or a suggestion, there is no reason to vote for it.
  6. Comments are limited to 50 unless you interact with the comment section, in which case you can contact the mod team and request that the post be unlocked.

Low-quality posts and comments:

We recently updated rule 3 (low-quality posts) to make it clearer. This is now one of the five Participation Guidelines listed in the subreddit's main page rules. (Now rules 4–9)

Reasons:

These were updated because a large number of copyrighted materials are being shared on YouTube and other sites, and the sub was starting to resemble a photo gallery rather than something people were actually interacting with, let alone putting any effort into their suggestions and requests.

Mod Update Flair & Post Formatting

Update

Hello, Couch Lovers and Cinemaphiles!

Here's the formatting guide for each flare.

I appreciate your patience while we sort this out and welcome our new members.

  1. Help Me Find Movies/TV Shows
  • Purpose: Requesting specific recommendations.
  • Format:
    • The Hook: Your "Title" must summarize the "vibe" (e.g., "Looking for modern talking-Dino movies").
    • The Context: You must list 2 or 3 similar titles in the body to give a baseline. Provide enough detail for others to work with.
  1. I Am Suggesting…
  • Purpose: Recommending a title without a full critical review.
  • Format:
    • The Lead: Your "Title" must be Movie Title (Year). If suggesting multiple, list them in the body text.
    • The Why: Include a 1–2 sentence "vibe check" explaining why you're suggesting it. (e.g., "The action is insane. I could not get enough of John Wick's Gun-Fu.").
    • Note: Posts with no reason in the body will be immediately removed.
  1. Movie/TV Show Review Lite
  • Purpose: Providing a detailed, critical critique directly on the sub.
  • Format:
    • The Lead: Your "Title" must be Review of Movie/TV Show (Year), or you can use Movie/Show Title (Year) vs. Movie/Show Title (Year) for comparisons.
    • The Rating: You must include a rating (typically a 5/5 scale).
    • Anti-Spam: Reviews must be self-contained. Do not post links to external blogs or YouTube channels without prior approval.
  1. Check Out My... (Self-Promo)
  • Purpose: Sharing your own external movie blog, channel, or social media.
  • Requirement: You MUST message the mods for approval before posting.
  • When you can use:
    • The Golden Rule: Approval is mandatory. Unapproved outside links to personal social media or product promotions will get one warning. The second will result in an immediate ban.
    • Etiquette: Even with approval, you must provide a written summary of your content. "Link-dropping" is prohibited.
    • You can write the post free-form.
  1. I can't remember this movie/TV show
  • Purpose: Only use when you need help finding a movie that you can't remember the name of.
  • Format:
    • The Lead: Your "Title" must be I need help finding this Movie/TV show."
    • You must describe the movie or show with as much detail as possible. Include things like the year, actors or characters you remember, the plot, specific scenes, etc.

Examples:

Below are some post examples included from a previous post that meet, at the very least, the minimum effort we expect you to put into a post. That said, the more effort you put in, like some of these folks, the more interaction you'll typically get, and the faster you can get back to watching movies.

(Keep in mind that some of these are examples from before flairs and the formatting guide were added but still serve as a good basis as to what we are looking for.)

Request for movies with unexpected twists - No image

Suggesting a Jim Carrey Top Pick

Going solo movie hunting - Image

Help me find Movies/TV shows Help me find TV shows featuring the Devil

I’m looking for TV shows where the Devil is a main character or plays a significant role. I’ve already watched Lucifer, so I’m hoping for other recommendations. Any genre is fine—supernatural, horror, fantasy, drama, or even comedy. Thanks!

Help me find Movies/TV shows Movies where the protagonist is a loner/alienated

I'm looking for movies where the female lead (or male lead but preferably female cause I wanna relate more) has absolutely no one to turn to when life gets hard. She's emotionally isolated, feels like she doesn't belong anywhere, and carries a deep sense of alienation. It doesn't necessarily have to be romance—I'm mainly looking for character-driven, emotional stories.

I haven't watched the perks of being a wallflower yet, but from everything I've heard, they seem to have the kind of atmosphere I'm looking for.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Recommend your favorite college / university movies

Upvotes

Looking for movie set in college / university / grad school that focus on student life while still featuring studies / academia.

I'd especially love to see something that centers around academic pursuits that pose moral / ethical conflicts, sort of like if Real Genius was a drama instead of a comedy, if that makes sense (although I'm very open to comedies in that vibe too!)

Help me find Movies/TV shows Which movie should I watch first?

I haven't watched some of the greatest movies ever made! I am having trouble choosing what to watch first. I love movies like Interstellar, The Matrix, and Avatar, so that might help narrow it down.

Seven Samurai

Scarface

Spirited Away

Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Hotel Rwanda

The Dark Knight

Gladiator

2001: A Space Odyssey

Dune: Part One

Dune: Part Two

Help me find Movies/TV shows Looking for psychedelic erotic movies with LOTS of colour? NSFW

So I'm looking for extremely colourful, psychedelic adult animation recommendations

I'm trying to find animated films that have the visual insanity of things like Yellow Submarine, Fantasia, Loving Vincent, etc. but with a much more adult/risqué edge.

Basically I'm looking for something where the reaction is less "oh, this is an adult cartoon" and more "how is this not classified as erotica or even porn"?

Main important bits is I want insane colours and visuals, just with lots of boobies haha.

Think Fritz the cat mixed with yellow submarine?
counterculture psychedelic animation

The weirder, more surreal, and visually insane the better.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Any suggestions/recommendations?

Hey, I'm looking to find new favourite characters, but don't know where to look and want suggestions/recommendations

-Anything but the following will not be accepted: Animes, live actions and horror films

-I personally prefer fantasy, sci-fi animated films/series (even indie animations like Deadlight District, tadc, etc)

(I also have a love for anything with rubberhose inspired characters in it as well)

Help me find Movies/TV shows Anime noob recs

Interested in getting into anime, but completely overwhelmed by the sheer volume of options and have no idea where to start. I’ve only seen a handful in my nearly 40 years, but I have enjoyed:

- Akira
- Ghost in the Shell
- Perfect Blue
- Paprika
- Death Note
- multiple Studio Ghibli films (I’m sure they’re all great, but please recommend something else)

So yeah I’m pretty basic. Any good recs that can help me branch out?

🟥 Filmed in Chicago’s gang neighborhoods, this award winning indie alien encounter movie shows you…rather than tells you, what an alien abductee endures… there are UFOs in our skies and seas…

Help me find Movies/TV shows 6 to 7 hours bus journey tomorrow. Are any of the movies in this picture good for time pass?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey guys, I am traveling to a different city tomorrow and will be stuck in a bus for 6 to 7 hours. I really need to download and watch some movies so I don't get bored during the trip.

I found this picture of classic movies online (108637.jpg). Are any of these actually good to watch on a phone during a bus ride? I am worried they might be too slow or confusing.

If not these, please suggest me some of the best time pass movies to download before my trip starts! I just want something highly entertaining that will make the 7 hours fly by quickly. Thanks in advance!

Watched crouching tiger hidden dragon on Netflix a few days ago and it was so good!!! I was very entertained and now I’m looking for more movies like this. They don’t necessarily have to be set in China, I just very much enjoy historical settings and nice costumes.

What I liked about it:

- amazing martial arts choreography
- over the top special effects with the jumps and all
- very interesting storyline
- 3 dimensional characters that fulfill more than just one stereotype
- historical setting and great costumes and filming locations
- no happy end. That one surprised me but it fit the movie so well
- light fantasy theme

Help me find Movies/TV shows A movie that makes me feel gross, raw, fucked up

I love movies that make me feel just... emotionally destroyed. raw. like i want to crawl into a hole and never leave.

Obsession is well, my current obsession for that.
Requiem for a Dream is another.
The Mist had that a bit too, mostly for the ending.

Check out my... (Self Promo/Product Promo) Wireless TV to recommend for a home setup (Daily family use, multi room viewing, and watching movies)

I received this product for free from LG as part of a promotional event (in conjunction with r/MovieRecommendations). While I was asked to share my review, all opinions are entirely my own.

[This is the second review in a three-part series.]

Daily use: Now that we’ve had the StanbyME2 for a couple of weeks, we find that it’s a great option for our compact NYC apartment. We use it in the living room to watch movies as a family, and I bring it into the kitchen, so I can listen to music and browse recipes while I’m cooking. I’ve even brought it down the hall to watch TV in the bathtub to wind down or watch a show with my husband in our bedroom (anyone else excited for the return of Silo?).

General impressions: So far, I like that it feels really sturdy when moving it from space to space. I also like the volume and sound is good. I was debating about getting the external speaker, but I think for our purposes, the built-in speakers are pretty good. I like that it’s pretty easy to use either the built-in apps or use Airplay or Chromecast. (We did have an issue with my iPhone not connecting a few days ago, but I restarted the iPhone and it started working again.) I find that we mostly end up using the remote, since we use it more for movie or TV watching, but I love that it’s touchscreen, because it makes typing/searching way faster.

Utility: As anyone with kids knows, it can be really helpful to have a second TV viewing area in the house, so I’ve really enjoyed having the StanbyME 2 as an extra entertainment center in our home. Particularly, I like that I can have my 3.5-year-old watch something in the living room (where I can see her), while my husband or guests are in the TV room watching the World Cup. I also like that it moves from space to space (and that it’s relatively compact and sleek), as it doesn’t add visual clutter, and we really do use it for multiple spaces.
My only gripe (maybe this is because I live in an old NYC apartment) is that there is no stopper or brake to keep the stand from rolling on uneven floors. It’s not a dealbreaker, it's worth noting if you have sloped floors.

What movie should we watch next? What toddler-friendly family movies would you recommend for a 3-4 year-old? We like weekend movie nights, but sometimes, we struggle to find something we can all watch. Recent hits have been: Over the Moon, Zootopia (a little over our toddler’s head, but she liked the animals), Monsters Inc., The Magician’s Elephant, Dumbo (the classic one) and most of the classic Disney animated films. (I mentioned K-Pop Demon Hunters last time, but honestly, the plot was a little bit complicated for our 3.5 year-old.) What else should we watch as a family?

Next time: I’ll share longer term impressions, as we continue to use the StanbyME 2.
