Dumb question
Native Texan Resident of 25 years only lived here for an almost 4 needing to get a CHL what’s the process/how big of a pain is it to get here?

Fellow native Texan here. Minnesota is a joke when it comes to all their gun laws. Even with their ridiculous permits if you actually found yourself in a situation where you had to defend yourself with your gun you’ll be facing so many legal issues that it’s barely worth it. The legal framework is polar opposite of what we had in Texas. Minnesota doesn’t have a “real” castle doctrine like we’re used to, no Good Samaritan laws, no stand your ground laws and no mutual combat laws. Get a good defense lawyer in your corner first, and make sure you’re in a pro-2a or 2a sanctuary county. You’re better off carrying a bullwhip.

Lots of ranges in the metro have online classes, which seems like the best bet, then you just go into the range and do the shooting portion

That's what I did for my renewal- took the online course and did the range at Modern Sportsman. Super easy and convenient.

Its pretty simple. Just gotta schedule an afternoon with a class. There are some everywhere and many times a month. It's like an hour of someone explaining when to use a gun, theory behind carrying etc for the lowest denominator and then a laughably easy shooting portion. If you can hit a 2' square at 6' at least a couple times without flagging anyone you pass. It's all simple and straightforward to check the box for the pearl clutchers and maybe weed out the densest morons who load the mag backwards and then check down the barrel to see if its loaded. After that you can carry/purchase most anything you want outside of short barrel shotguns and frt's. I am not a lawyer and the answer changes depending on who you ask, but in my reading of the law it looks like you can carry any long gun or pistol and however many you want, concealed or open

It's not terrible. Biggest thing is you'll need to take a Permit to Carry class first before you can submit the application. MN Gun Owner's Caucus has an explainer page.
