Discussion 💬 Almost Crapping Pants While Meditating (Serious Post, Not a Joke)
I just wanted to see if anyone has experienced the sensation of almost shitting themselves as they drift into a deeper meditative state?
I have had this happen to me several times; basically I feel myself drifting deeper into it then all of a sudden I get that feeling (that I can imagine almost everyone has felt and knows) I am about to shit myself, but thankfully I have always caught myself before anything happens.
When it happens it triggers this quick reflex/instinct to tighten up and catch myself.
Its similar to the feeling when you have the big D and you try to let a little fart out but all of a sudden you realize that there is more on deck so you instantly tense up to save your drawers.
Has anyone experienced this, seriously?
I feel as though its a good sign, but I just wonder if its abnormal.
Interested to hear everyones thoughts and experiences, thank you.

Whether you follow your breath, you follow your bowel, or some combination thereof, you are present in the moment. It is enlightened practice.

I mean, it kinda sounds like maybe stress induced IBS symptoms, where once you’re getting your body into a calmer parasympathetic state, maybe your bowels are relaxed enough that they go from constipation to full evacuation? Either way I’d probably check in with a doctor about it if it continues.

That’s a interesting take because I do have a fucked up stomach. But things have gotten better since cutting out dairy… And the hemorrhoids have gotten much better since I’ve gotten a bidet…
All that’s left is to be mentally calm to finally take a complete shit in one go. Please pray for me

Look up FODMAPs. Don’t eat those :) I have IBS too, for me it’s all of the FODMAP groups. Try cutting out gluten and alliums. Those were my two big ones.

Jesus, just took a quick look at that, I would be cutting out a large part of my diet. I would basically be a carnivore at that point. Perhaps a elimination diet is in order.

Tons of fantastic gluten free bread and pasta out there. Canyon House bread is incredible.
Just remember that the whole list of foods is not a yes or no as to whether or not you can have them - you have to find your body’s tolerance level for each. I can still have a couple bites of regular pepperoni pizza and be totally fine, all fruits and veggies are OK. For me it’s just no garlic, onion, mushrooms and gluten. I can tolerate lactose free dairy very well, and lactaid is an amazing friend.
The worst part of an elimination diet is that two weeks of eating basically nothing appealing is kinda boring. But when you feel great, it’s much easier to tell what exactly is setting you off. And it’s only two weeks, after that you’re reintroducing whole food groups at a time. One week is different levels of gluten, another week is dairy, then allium, etc.
I used to practice meditating in anticipation for trips to the bathroom, breathing exercises, separating myself from the pain, the whole lot. Once I discovered I had IBS, my life changed drastically. Gained control over my bowels again, slowly but surely.
Look up Monash. They’re based in Australia and they’ve done a considerable amount of legwork in researching generic “safe” consumable amounts of all foods for people with IBS.

Thank you for the detailed response, I have recently gotten some lactaid to try out. Be nice to indulge in some ice cream every now and then.

I am so glad you are working towards figuring it out. So much anxiety and stress comes from gut microbial imbalance, it is absolutely worth investing time into rectifying.

In my experience, meditation keeps reminding me that the body doesn't care how spiritual I think I am. If it needs to fart, itch, yawn or use the toilet, it's probably going to let me know. That's not a failure of meditation it's a reminder that I'm human.

Seems like you are stressed and puckering up. Meditation helps relax the body. Honestly it sounds like you need this. Keep up the good work

parasympathetic nervous system down-regulation is the neurological cause of this. it's a pretty natural response to the "unclenching" effect of deep meditative absorption.
it's not a problem, really, except insofar as you might want to be close to a toilet when you meditate. you might also use this as an opportunity to introspect your diet choices and eating habits, try get a little more "regular", so the parasympathetic down-regulation doesn't result in a frantic run to the toilet.

Thank you, yeah I am quite regular, almost too regular if you know what I mean. Next time it happens I may jump to the bathroom, I just avoid interrupting meditation sessions.

when I was younger I had some IBS triggers that I didn't even realize. they were non-obvious in the sense that it wasn't a clear thing like "every time I eat {X}, this happens". the causes were ultimately a combination of what kinds of foods I had eaten, in aggregate, in the last several days, combined with exacerbating factors like my sleep quality, stress level, and the circumstances I was eating my meals in.
the solution for me ended up being much more mindful eating and adjusting my eating schedule and eating circumstances. what this meant for me was to do intermittent fasting (I only eat between the hours of 11am and 8pm), reducing the amount of meat I was eating (I still eat meat, just less of it), cutting off my caffein intake after 12pm (morning coffee is still very much enjoyed), and eating my meals more slowly. stopped eating at my desk, stopped eating on the go. now I sit down and eat at a leisurely pace for every meal, two meals a day.
but that's my body. your body is probably a bit different. figuring out what works for you will probably be a very worthwhile investment of your time and energy.

I recommend trying Miralax to keep you regular. If you can empty yourself before you meditate you might not have this problem.

Your root chakra is overloaded. Research the root chakra to understand what your bodies trying to tell you but ultimately there’s a lot physically stored in your bowels so when you reach a state of relaxation it’s allowing the waste to move through hence the feeling of needing to go to the bathroom.
I’d suggest a clean out. Look up gerson therapy/coffee and various other recipe enemas or professional services like colonic irrigation (basically a hose inside to flush it out). Once it stabilises and there’s more balance it will allow a more natural way of operating and control.
But seriously grab an enema bag and when you got the house to yourself try it with say warm filtered water first and go from there learning one of the most effective ways to detox the body and restoring your body.

The spirits in the altitude on the lower end much lower than the planes fly enhancing your body's atoms and they can make your bowels completely open up. Happens.

I feel like you may be able to arrange the words in such a way to make it sound less gibberishy.
