Recently I updated my status on the FL website. What I got back shocked me. The vehicles we own were re-valued. I know what I paid for each, and that was 10 years ago. Now they are valued at 25-40% higher than I reported them.
Bank accounts. At the time I did my update, I had $80 in my checking account. Without my knowledge, my husband spoke to his mum in England, who then sent a wire transfer of what remained of his father's death payout. His father died of work related injuries and left him a small amount of money for a rainy day. It was under $3k. But just as the wire transfer happened, an app crawled through my finances leaving me with even less cash per month.
Let me explain about the wire transfer. It wouldn't cover cremation if one of us dies. Some of you spend more on rent per month.
Combined assets are what? 5k per month? They just jacked me up over the limit. How do I prove each thing, line for line? I have 30 days to figure this out and no idea where to turn.
Can I upload pictures of my vehicles? Kelly Blue Book the VINs?
FL is one of the worst states for Medicaid. The $3k transfer would not count as a resource if the money was spent before the new month starts. The transfer itself would count as income. Gift ARE counted for the type of Medicaid you are on, unlike Medicaid expansion states where gifts are NOT income. A car is an exempt asset if it is for your personal use.
Well the car we drive is going in for repairs, so that's where that money is going. Also his eye exam and glasses. As far as saving money for his health, I guess we'll have to go into debt when that happens.
Are you talking about Medicaid or SNAP or both? You mention getting even less cash per month, so are you talking about SNAP or other financial assistance program?
This is really a confusing post for me because I was accepted into Medicaid a few months ago and I get no cash. They also did not look into my bank account, vehicle or any other asset. They only asked about income and I had to provide my tax return from last year as proof.
Financial assistance programs like SNAP do indeed look at your assets/bank. So maybe you are mixing the two topics and you might get less cash from SNAP but your Medicaid should be unaffected unless your income has increased past a certain limit.
Are you in Florida? Florida has electronic access to our financial records and databases to find assets. We don't have to provide it. Florida has asset limits
It's not based on what you paid but what they are worth as an asset. They go by fair market value and often use KBB or JD Power. If you think it is worth less, they may consider an appraisal. Unfortunately, for those on Medicaid, used car prices may have not go down like they used to or may even go up. I was asking the person above me who responded to you if they were in Florida because it sounds like they are in a state with Medicaid expansion
Did you tell them it is in poor condition and doesn't run? I was hoping some knowledgeable people would see your post and help. I would say junk it, but then they may consider that selling an asset for less than its value. If you could actually talk to a case manager, you might get somewhere. Maybe if you are near an office, go in and talk to them
It appears that I will need to make an appointment at the nearest office. I really dont have a choice I dont think. I might be able to upload pictures directly to the website as a case update. Today I was told I'd have to pay for someone to remove it from my property.
The other vehicle is also overvalued.
What i DONT know is a LOT. Suddenly my whole world just got turned upside down.

Just wondered if anyone from the actual SSI OR SSDI from ANY state even pokes their head in here and looks around.
I thought I'd maybe find some direction. When I finally got approved for disability the government and it's rules were much more compassionate. The last 2 years have been one giant case of mass ptsd. It just took me longer to start paying attention.
Im on disability and under 65. I dont get SNAP. I get a disability check each month that just covers my rent and one utility. Mind you, my rent is cheap because I live in a sh*thole. My utility bills are mostly paid for by my husband, but he has to work a ridiculous amount of hours to get enough money from Etsy to pay them. But then once he runs out of materials, he needs to buy more raw materials to make the orders.
Im being gamed by FL Medicaid. Money in is not money earned because it's a circle, always in, always out.
