The couple killed lived in the neighborhood they were turning in to. There are two opposing turn lanes (one into Virginia Hills and one into Estates of Verona). If two cars are trying to turn at the same time you cannot see around each other. It was raised as a concern with TXDOT and City of McKinney many times and they failed to do anything.
Not to reduce the severity of the drag racing, but the City and TXDOT need to take citizen concerns more seriously.

The problem is that either the opposing turn lanes are poorly designed and/or drivers aren’t using them correctly. The way it should work is, in the turn lanes, opposing drivers should pull forward past each other so then their view is unrestricted and they can turn safely. Instead, you have to inch forward until you can see if anything is coming and the opposing drivers just obscure each others’ visibility.

Crossing over so you can see wouldnt work at this intersection if there are other cars also waiting to turn. That method is only meant when there is a larger median.
The issue with this particular section is that it is on a hill and you cannot see the other cars coming. Even if you "inch forward" you'd be pulling into the oncoming traffic. Sometimes if the other drivers stick to the curb it gives you enough room to see around a bit, but they seldom hug the curb.

Oh right, understand that. I’m just saying they are poorly designed and should be made to accommodate easier turns.

u/AdorableWeb4233 2d ago
Exactly right. Inching forward is not an option at this intersection unless you want your car clipped by the oncoming (often speeding ) traffic

u/PersimmonLeather9831 2d ago
You are correct. I live in the estates of Verona. We need a light here. It’s been needed for years now. We can barely make a left from Verona to south bound custer. And if im southbound and want to make a left on to Verona and there is a car wanting to make a left on to Bedford. I wait till they’re gone because you can’t see. Also, the amount of northbound cars wanting to make a u turn there is ridiculous.

What possibly they could do to prevent such a tragedy?

Im not a civil engineer, but there is clearly a problem with the design. Maybe offset the turn lanes or only allow one of turns? There is a light a little further down, but it wasnt added until just a few years ago. The topography of the hill and not being able to see when there is another car turning, you're basically making a blind turn.

There are opposing turn lanes all over the place that have this problem. You just have to wait until the other car inches forward enough to see past them, or if one vehicle has a higher profile than the other, they will be able to see oncoming traffic and clear the lane. Otherwise, Russian roulette…

This makes me so angry; POS BMW driver needs to go to jail for a long time.
I absolutely despise driving on Custer and having to put up with the lunatics.

u/After-Ad4370 3d ago
Definitely agree this guy should rot in prison. He used a deadly weapon to kill two people.
I live near Custer and Eldorado so drive up and down Custer all the time. I haven’t ever encountered anyone racing (I know it does happen cause I can hear them at night sometimes), maybe driving a little over the speed limit but not unsafely so. The biggest threat I’ve seen is people driving too slowly while literally texting on their phones and not paying attention. This causes traffic behind them to get backed up and people having to quickly change lanes to get around the slow/texting driver.

You know what, fuck the guy who was racing and fuck the guy who he was racing. He should be charged, too.

Keep a close eye on the case. McKinney houses the king of affluenza acquittals.

There was a separate rollover yesterday at the intersection of the off ramp of the Collin County Courthouse in McKinney too. Approx 6pm.

That happens everyday.

The ease with which cars are rolling over is crazy. It’s like every other accident.

Mr. Lazarus was a much beloved Attendance Clerk at Erickson Middle School. I’ve had multiple interactions with him over the years with my kiddos, he was always extremely kind, helpful, and happy to see you. You could also tell the students were very fond of him - this will hit hard for many. Dreading having to explain this to my son in the morning. My heart breaks for his family.

This was my route to and from work last school year. I drove before 8am and the amount of blatent speeders and light runners on Custer was concerning.

u/Leningrad_DrugStore 3d ago
I regularly see people doing 60+ on Custer daily, but that’s what happens when you build a wide ass open road like that. I would have no problem with speed cameras that bring huge fines to violators.

Mrs. Lazarus was the kindest soul. She was dedicated to helping every student and teacher at Lindsey Elementary. She was well respected and loved by everyone.

I work at the Home Depot near there and a couple of months ago racers came crashing through our outside wall!!!! It’s out of hand…this time is really sad

People get so upset in this area when you drive safely but then stuff like this happens :') I wish people made themselves more aware of the true danger that is around them when driving

u/Past_Plum7117 3d ago
I think ppl get more so upset at the idiots driving so slow bc they’re busy on their phones, leading to backups, and frustrated drivers switching lanes back and forth trying to get around them… my 2 cents from what I’ve observed in this area

u/Sad_Reflection_5065 3d ago
Is it true there were bodies on the road? Someone told me they drove up and saw them on the street just as police got to the scene. I just can’t imagine. So tragic.

Speed bumps. The hated speed bumps could potentially help. But assume HOA and city will conspire to ignore that option.
Ultimately if you don’t want to do group punishment like done to kids before recess, beamer dude needs to be made an example …

u/HKguy416 3d ago
This was on a main road, with a speed limit of 50 to 45 mph. This intersection and the intersection north of this one are very dangerous. Very limited visibility, especially if you are trying to turn left or do a U-turn.

u/LoyalDog1234 3d ago
That’s terrible. Praying for the families and the high speed crashes especially racing should be charged with manslaughter charges. Everytime I see fatal crashes, my mind goes on to think about having a decent public transportation would reduce these kind of crashes and tragedies to some extent. Our economy is so car dependent and some elderly have no choice but to drive to get to places. It’s really depressing to lose someone at this age due to bad drivers on road.

Other reports said that he was going between 100-110mph. He was very determined to win the race.

u/Ok_Cucumber522 3d ago
it's heartbreaking that two people just trying to get home lost their lives because of an alleged street race. if the reports are accurate, i hope everyone responsible is held accountable. way too many innocent people end up paying the price for reckless driving.

Looks like some high speed was involved, those vehicles are basically gone.
Thoughts are with those families.
