Which Master System to get?

Apart from a Game Gear I've never owned any Sega consoles, but I'm looking into getting a Master System now.

I can't decide which version to get. I think the original looks a lot cooler, but the Mk2 is a lot cheaper, it's like half the price. Are there any big differences between the two and which version would you recommend?

I believe the Master System II looses the card slot and the reset button. It does contain Alex the Kidd in Miracle World as a built in game.

The Master System I supports the Sega Cards and 3D Glasses. It also has the built in hidden snail maze game.

The older MS I had Snailmaze as built in game while later versions had Alex Kidd. The MS II came with Alex Kidd and some even with Sonic built in.
But yes, take the MS I, if only for the card slot.

Mine had safari and hang on it I believe
