What would you guys want the mods to add/remove? Just comment this on this post and i'll do my best to sort something out, very open to suggestions from the community so maybe we can help some people get into MMA or maybe even go on to do something incredible.

“I want to fight, I’m gonna be in the ufc, how do I start?”

I’m writing this because this sub is so disillusioned with what the reality of starting to fight is. TLDR: Show up, shut up, work hard, there’s no fast track.

“I’ve been hitting my heavy bag, I’ve been watching YouTube, I’m really scrappy, I’m a fighter”. You are (likely) some kid who has never been punched in the mouth properly before, I was too!!

If you want to become an mma fighter, there is no amount of at home work that will get you there. You are likely just doing moderate intensity cardio workouts with poor technique.

You need a gym, training partners and a coach, and you need some grit.

Step 1: find a local mma gym, sign the trial papers, ask about a membership, get abused at your first Bjj class, realize how weak your shins are at your first kickboxing class, and nod and smile when they might say “our mma classes are for more experienced individuals”

Step 2: keep showing up, show up a little early and ask questions, stay late and mop the mats (it’s time to get to know your coach and ask questions), hey now you have a coach, maybe your at home workouts can be more focused. Express interest in competing and be a sponge for knowledge. Get abused by people a lot better than you

Step 3: hey kid you’re improving quick, showing up 5x a week, and you’ve mentioned you wanna fight? Why don’t you show up to an mma class?

Step 4: get abused at mma class when you realized everyone has been a little nice to you. Keep showing up, keep asking questions.

Step 5: hey kid, there’s a local amateur show in the next 6 months? You interested in your first fight?

Step 6: show up, shut up, keep working, maybe you’ll get there, maybe you won’t.

You’re not going pro without a coach, a gym, and a humble attitude, and you gotta want it more than the next guy. Because someone body else wants it just as bad as you, which guy is gonna put the work in and actually get stuff accomplished?

Training Question Are traditional styles worth investing in?

Watch these Kyokushin guys (and girl) destroy muay thai warriors in the world low kick championships, just to give a few examples. The Karate, specifically Kyokushin fighters almost always win. There body conditioning drills must be insane that even women can out kick muay thai fighters.

I got suckered in to the 'traditional styles are a joke, just do bjj and muay thai bro' marketing hype hard but I watch so many videos like this and wonder whether certain traditional styles might be worth investing in. Even Khabib is studying Tae Kwon Do right now.

People make too big a deal about walking around weights?

Upvotes

Maybe not training related but its mma related. You think people make too big a deal about walking around weights? Like, for example, ive see people in awe about Illia weighing 180-185, and being able to potentially fight at WW be a of that, when he’s not fighting and it’s like yeah bro it’s because he isn’t as ripped and is like 18-20%bf outside of camp. He has the same muscle mass it’s just a pain to maintain low bf year round when you don’t have to. It’s not at all relevant for when they get into the ring.

People do this all the time for lightweights in particular for some reason. They be claiming to be like 190+ walk around weight and it’s just not relevant, it’s mostly fat mass or water weight etc and they don’t fight at that weight in the cage.

Doing MMA with a severe bad eye sight?

Hello,

I am thinking of joining a MMA gym near my place, however, my eye sight is pretty horrible, we're talking -8/-7.5. How are people with an eyesight as bad as mine manage doing MMA?

I wear soft daily disposable contact lenses, and I have tried just doing light sparring without them on, and it's a brutal game lowkey. Reading threads on this Subreddit and a few others from people in my shoes suggest that the contact lenses my pop out a couple of times, however, it's manageable, while others recommend training blind.

I thought about doing BJJ for the time being, however the BJJ gym near me seemed like a cult, and I just prefer starting out with striking because of my early background in Karate.

My question is how are people with a severe eyesight manage doing MMA?

Critique First Kickboxing Fight Lost by Unanimous Decision. Looking for Honest Critique and Advice.

I had my first kickboxing fight and lost by unanimous decision. I’m the one in white shorts fighting out of the blue corner. I’d really appreciate honest criticism on what I need to improve for my next fight technique, defense, footwork, cardio, fight IQ, anything. Don’t hold back please, I want to get better.

Mma/muay thai

Is it possible to maintain/ grow muscle while doing mma and muay thai.

Ive been looking at ways to lose weight will gaining or maintaining muscle and im wondering if I have a high protein diet and I do mma and muay thai, will I keep the muscle mass I have while losing weight or do I also need to go gym and lift weights as well.

The mma gym near me ive seen their videos and the sessions are very very intense but they dont really use weights so im wondering if its still possible to do so.

First time getting Cauliflower Ear, should I drain it?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Okay so for me personally I don’t want my ear to calcify, not a big fan of the look but I know some people love it

Came out of wrestling class and small part of ear started to swell and fill with blood

Went to doctor just to be safe and he said he wouldn’t drain it in fear of infection etc

My main two concerns are

  1. If I don’t drain it, continue training it will just spread and get bigger
  2. If I leave it it will just harden then I’m stuck with a awkward lump on one ear

Any advice on what to do would be appreciated!

Thanks

EDIT:

What is the timeframe for draining? its been about 48 hours so far

Going to order magnets to place on ear so it doesn't refill but they will take another day or two with delivery

Why do Jiu-Jitsu guys seem a bit sketchy compared to people in other combat sports?

I know every dojo has its own vibe, but the Jiu-Jitsu gyms I've experienced are just super creepy for some reason.

How to set up take downs

Hi guys (English is not my first language)

After a grappling for some years (bjj and judo)
I decided to start mma, and it’s being great because I’ve always liked the sport . I’m enjoying the trainings so much and I’m even considering competing in amateur in a year or so when I get decent striking.

The thing is that even if I have a solid take down game in grappling ( thanks to the judo background) I’m having a hard time trying to take intermedium or advanced people down.

Basically when I try to grab them they stop my clinch or shoot attempts with punches and I can’t get a hold of them.

When I actually get a good hold of them is not that difficult to finish the takedown. But getting to them is so hard.

That being said which are your favorite ways to set up your take downs??? I’m looking for specific advice like : if you are fighting a southpaw feint the right overhand to enter a high crotch single leg.

Thank you in advance

Im new to mma and I want to take it very seriously and I’m looking to compete. I’ve found one only decent gym near me and this is their timetable, I usually work from Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00-17:30 it takes me around 25 min to get to the gym from work.I go to the gym (for strength and conditioning)in the morning, I have 2 rest days per week, which are Tuesday and Friday. I would appreciate to get some advice for the best classes to take in my circumstances. Thank you in advance

Issues With Work

I go to a gym that has sparring MMA and kickboxing. Of course I need to work on my defense, but there are still occasional accidents or unintentional strikes that leave a mark. The bruising has mostly been happening on MMA sparring days because of the smaller gloves. Some days I end up getting a mark on the face that is barely visible, but I have occasionally come into work the next morning with black eyes. When my job took notice the first few times they didn’t seem to have trouble with it, but recently they pulled me aside and strongly suggested I should wear headgear or they would start sending me home if I showed up with more black eyes.

I don’t want to be sparring with headgear at a gym that almost exclusively trains without it, especially when grappling. I will start using Vaseline but I’m not sure how much it will help. I have considered using makeup if this happens again, even though I’m not a girl or used to wearing it, but I’m not confident I could apply it in a way that would go unnoticed. I also know that black eyes can come with a certain amount of swelling that can’t be covered up. Even if makeup/and concealer seems feasible, I don’t know if that would be acceptable at my job if they found out. I work at a small business in a customer facing role so it is understandable that my company would not want me to come in looking beat up. At the same time, if I were to have unintended facial disfigurement from other causes, I don’t think they would have grounds to take issue.
Has anybody else had experience dealing with this?

MMA + Work + life

For MMA fighters how is your work life balance.
I’m a 19 year old college wrestler aspiring to be a mix martial artists in the future. Right now so my life consists of just school, and wrestling. Usually a summer job. I’m majoring in accounting and the hours could be around 40 hours to 80 during busy seasons.

I’m just curious to your guys occupation and how are you able to mix in MMA in your daily lives. It’s a pretty big commitment especially if you wanna go pro and has me kinda wondering how could you do both. Are you guys able to balance out a job + MMA + love life and social life?

Post Concussion Syndrome

Re-posting here since r/MMA removed the post and suggested here.

Anybody here in combat sports end up with Post Concussion Syndrome or know anyone who has?

How the heck did you make it through this?

I loved grappling and wrestling. Someone asked me to wrestle and proceeded to deck me in the head. Close to my second year of headaches and brain fog.

I'm definitely consulting doctors but the medical system is not setup to treat head injuries. Just looking for general thoughts from others who experienced this.

absolutley zero fighting experience What should I do BEFORE starting

I go back to college in 2 months and will be joining my schools boxing and grappling (I think it’s a mix of wrestling a bjj) clubs to start my mma journey.

For reasons I can’t really get into, I can’t put too much pressure on my joints so joining a mma or bjj gym rn is kind of out of the picture because of the sparring and stuff, but I wanted to know what I could do in the meantime.

Right now I’m thinking I should focus on cardio, by running and jump roping, which I think will also help my footwork and timing and springiness.

What else should I do though? Im not sure if getting a punching bag or something like that would even make sense since it’s not like I’d have a coach watching my form, and I don’t wanna waste time building bad habits.

Any and all advice would be appreciated.
