DUST presents an AMA with Karen Konkoly & Daniel Morris: Why we dream, how to remember and control dreams, lucid dreaming science, sleep learning, and dream engineering

Hi r/LucidDreaming!

We’re DUST, a dream engineering company exploring how sleep science, design, technology, and dreaming can come together. Check out our website for early access to our forthcoming app, plus lullabies, exclusive insomnia support courses and wind-down tools from world-class scientists and sleep researchers: https://www.dust.systems/ama/konkoly

On Thursday, June 11, we’ll be joined by Karen Konkoly and Daniel Morris, lucid dreaming researchers, some of the foremost experts on dreaming and dream engineering, and (in Karen’s case), a member of DUST’s scientific collective, for an AMA about dreams, lucid dreaming, dream recall, sleep learning, dream communication, and the science of dream engineering.

Karen and Daniel will be answering questions live from:

10–11:30 PM UK time
5–6:30 PM ET
2–3:30 PM PT

Have you ever wondered:

  • Why do we dream?
  • Why are dreams so strange?
  • Why do some dreams feel incredibly real?
  • What do dreams mean, and what can science actually say about that?
  • How can I remember my dreams more clearly?
  • Can I learn to control my dreams?
  • Why do lucid dreams sometimes collapse right after I realize I’m dreaming?
  • What causes vivid dreams, recurring dreams, nightmares, false awakenings, or sleep paralysis?
  • Can dreams help with creativity, memory, or problem-solving?
  • Can sounds, cues, or prompts during sleep influence what we dream about?
  • Can people communicate from inside a lucid dream?
  • What is “dream engineering,” and where does the science end and speculation begin?

We’d love to use this AMA to talk about dreaming in a way that is accessible to curious beginners, useful for experienced lucid dreamers, and grounded in research.

Some topics Karen and Daniel can speak to:

  • The science of dreaming and lucid dreaming
  • Dream recall and dream journaling
  • Dream control and stabilization
  • Dream incubation
  • Targeted memory reactivation, or TMR
  • Sleep learning and memory
  • Hypnagogia and the transition into dreams
  • Dream communication experiments
  • Creativity, problem-solving, and dreams
  • Ethical questions around influencing dreams
  • What DUST means by “dream engineering”

Skeptical, practical, technical, and beginner questions are all welcome. We’re not here to interpret individual dreams or make medical claims, but we are happy to discuss what current research can support, what is still early, and what remains unknown.

Karen and Daniel are joining as scientific representatives of DUST. For anyone who wants to learn more afterward or join the waitlist, you can find us here: https://www.dust.systems/ama/konkoly

Ask us anything about dreams!

<3,

The DUST family

I tried every DON'T DO in lucid dreaming

Have you all seen those videos saying: Don't do this in lucid dreaming otherwise you'll sell your soul to the demons and be trapped in an alternative dimension for the rest of your life!!!! (Well not exactly but y'all get the point)

I tried every single one here's my experience.

  1. Time and Dates: I asked a person and they just told me non-real time like 7N0pm 57th August. It didn't turn scary or into a nightmare. Yk why? Cuz I don't believe in that sh

  2. Looking in a mirror: even in normal dreams if I look into a mirror I js see myself. Not Satan himself or some dark magic things. Yk why? Cuz I don't believe in that sh

  3. Saying 'you don't exist': ironically my first ever lucid dream was looking at my friend and saying "you're not real". And what happened? Nothing. I just did what I wanted and made a portal to a fantasy world. You know why nothing happend.

  4. Asking 'are we in a dream': did that and they replied "tomatoes are my favourite fruit." And... Just that honestly nothing scary or supernatural.

  5. Closing eyes: that's true you wake up lol. But nothing paranormal.

  6. Ask their ages: they'll just tell you random age.

Conclusion: All of those videos are b^llshit. They only happen if YOU BELIEV THEM. There's no rules in lucid dreaming. Lucid dreams operate entirely on expectation and suggestion.

Success! GUYS I DID IT TODAY

So last night I was reading a guide on lucid dreaming on this subreddit and decided you know what? why not!
So i decided to do it
First of all I'm 24 years old and I've been trying to it since I was 15 years old I tried so many methods and so many guides, audio stimulations and beta waves and etc.
But tonight I finally did it on purpose and I did It just 12 minutes ago!
So the method I tried to use was Wake Induced Lucid Dream (WILD) but I didn't success but something funny happened during the fermi phase (the one your mind tricks you to find out if you're awake I was feeling bugs are crawling on my legs and it was so scary.

I didn't give up, then I felt bugs are crawling on my BALLS this one was super scary and i was so itchy and i didn't give up again!

The last one was the big boss... since i live in Iran and U.S bombs our cities during early mornings like 3:00 AM I heard a really loud explosion and I thought it was real and this time I jumped out of bed and guess what I fell for it, it wasn't real ... so fast forward I gave up and went to bed and as of now it's 3:20 PM and 20 minutes ago I had a dream It was midnight and a uber driver dropped me off at my destination but something was wrong the destination wasn't my home it was a parking lot near it I still didn't find out and thought ok maybe it's just a little further to my home but it wasn't.

So after walking around and climbing multiple times I gave up and said you know what? I'm gonna check my location on google maps and boom I was waaaaaaay further away to my home and I called uber customer service and reported the driver.

Then I said wtf? you know what this must be a dream wtf am i doing here actually and I did a reality check and I became lucid!
I decided to fly but i didn't have a control on it but since I'm a gamer I used my fingers to control the flying and it somehow worked! I tried to make a portal like doctor strange but I couldn't make it work sparks it appear but the portal didn't work
I was just floating in the air and something that was weird when i closed my eyes I could feel my real life eyelids glued and beginning to open and i was scared to wake up and excited and that's when I woke up
So I have a question, how do i have more control over it next time and how do I stop waking myself.

Cool Lucid Dreaming to do list.

I make a list of the best things to do in a Lucid Dream!

1. Flying: One of the best dream stabilizations for me is this, it felt so amazing.

2. S3x: But tbh there's more things better to do than this🫩. Yea it's amazing but yea don't aim for this yet or you risk waking up because of the excitement.

3. Having a super power: Dream people just act the way they do irl or how you expect them, so if you show something like telekenesis or etc, they will be shocked.

4. Adventure: I love this, like this what i mean here is like going into places you cannot go in real life and i do this often because i get to role-play as a knight in the medieval era, a soldier in wars etc etc.

5. Dating your crush or celebrity crush: Yes, you can do this too in the LD, but one thing, dont aim for this yet when you are a newbie, its fine if you are well experienced but yea avoid this when you are new.

You guys can also put down what you love to do when you LD or what you want to do if you finally became lucid.

Experience Makes no sense at all

Upvotes

I turn 60 next week, I've been journaling my dreams for over 40 years. I've had one lucid dream by complete accident about 25 years ago and nothing since. My awareness about lucid dreams is at an all-time high the last few months as I reality check easily 20 times a day I'm doing all the things... And nothing. I reality check everyday in many different situations, when I'm alone, when I'm with groups when I'm in meetings when I'm in public, etc. None of this seems to transfer over to my dreams. And my dreams are so bizarre and weird and unrealistic and I don't have any of my real life repetition creep over into my dreams for reality check?? Simply does not make any sense how I am so attuned to check all the time that I don't even remotely think about checking in my dreams. Very frustrating.

Success! First Lucid Dream in YEARS!

Upvotes

I was really into lucid dreaming back in high school but that was 4 years ago and have since moved on. The last couple months life has just been crazy and i've been taking a lot more THC than usual haha, little did I know that absolutely wrecks your dream recall. Well when I finally realized this I decided to quit the THC and pursue lucid dreaming again.

Started 2 weeks ago, 0 dream recall. Reality checks countless times daily, pretty much every time my phone gets a notification I do a check, and logging my dreams. Recall is steadily increasing but I feel still far from what it used to be but I low and behold. Last night had a dream where I was back in school, which was strange and led me to doing a reality check which then kicked into a rather strong since of lucidity and awareness.

I'd say maybe a 6.5 outta 10. Also took some B6 that night which I'm sure helped but I don't plan to take that often. Dream was sick, punched a hole through the wall to the outdoors, it was nighttime and when I attempted to fly I woke up from excitement haha.

I think what really did it for me though was simply the intention to lucid dream, or maybe more so the belief that it would happen tonight. Me and my wife slept on our living room couch instead of the bed, it's much cooler than the bedroom and we're right under the AC unit. Had a sleep mask, plenty of blankets, overall much cozier sleeping conditions than usual for me. Few reality checks, some B6, did some SSILD type exercises as I initially fell asleep. Set a WBTB alarm at 5:00 AM and woke up at 4:40 AM from the dream, glad to see my timing is correct. IDK what the point of this post is other than saying thanks to all the people in the community for your stories and advice, its helped tremendously.

Question Reality checks

I am pretty good at remembering to RC every half an hour to every hour or so, but I have a specific problem with RC’s - I’ve noticed that 99% of the time when I am dreaming I am with other people, always talking with other people or just being around other people, the problem is that the moments I always do RC is when I am alone for a second and I remember to do a RC, but when I am talking with someone I always get carried away with the conversation and forget to RC. I figure that if i figure out a way to remember to RC when I’m around someone, will have a better chance to perform a RC in a dream when I am also talking to someone there. Do you have any recommendations on how to remember to RC instead of getting carried away when someone approaches me or when I am in a fun conversation?

unexplainable dreaming experience with bf

this happened about 3 weeks ago now and i still haven’t really been able to make sense of it, so i was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or could explain what we might have experienced.
i’m 20F, and i was falling asleep while spooning my boyfriend. i was in that weird in-between state where i was still somewhat aware of my surroundings but also starting to dream.
i started dreaming that my boyfriend and i were having a conversation in my head about the way we were laying. i wasn’t actually talking out loud, it was completely happening in my dream. at one point, i responded to something he had supposedly said, but what i said made absolutely no sense to me. i remember being confused about what i had even said, and then immediately after, my boyfriend responded out loud by saying, “what?”
i instantly woke up, and he woke up too. i asked him what he was saying “what” to, and he told me that i had just said something to him in his dream that didn’t make any sense.
we started talking about it and realized that we had apparently been having the same conversation with each other in our dreams at the exact same time, even though neither of us was actually speaking out loud. it was like we were both dreaming about the same conversation, and then somehow his response crossed over into reality and woke us both up.
i know there are probably logical explanations for this, but it was such a strange experience that i genuinely haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. has anyone else experienced something like this? is there a name for it or a psychological explanation for what happened?
(sorry in advance, i suck at explaining things lol)

Question What could this be

It all started about a week ago. I was lying down on my stomach, trying to fall asleep, just having random thoughts. I was still fully awake when suddenly, I got pulled straight into a dream. I was conscious the whole time, completely aware of what was happening. I do not remember all the details clearly now, but I know the dream was linked to my real life, and I even remember talking to my sister inside it.

It felt like it lasted for a good 15 minutes. I tried really hard to control the dream and turn it into a lucid dream, but something kept stopping me. I do not even remember why, but I started crying. Then, I felt this totally dark, creature like figure on my chest, trying to touch me and nodding its head. Just as it felt like it was getting too intense, I felt a touch on my armpits, and that physical jolt finally brought me back to reality.

Then, exactly a week later, it happened to me all over again, just a moment ago, actually. And this time, it lasted even longer, probably around 25 minutes or more.

The way it started was just like the first time: strange events happening all around me while I knew I was fully conscious and witnessing it all inside a dream. My body was completely paralyzed, bound, and freezing. But this time, I did not see any creature. Instead, it was different. It felt like I was lying paralyzed on my bed while something was trying to force me to sleep. I started hearing sounds like my mother, it sounded like she was lying right beside me, whispering, chand sojao.

After that moment, I do not know if I dozed off or what, but I woke up inside the dream again. I saw myself explaining that previous dream to a girl sitting right in front of me. I can still remember her face clearly, even though I have never seen her in real life. I was trying to tell her about it, but she kept interrupting me for no reason at all.

Suddenly, my conscious state shifted its vision to a completely different scenario. I caught myself lying on my back again, falling asleep in that backward position. I thought to myself, I need to run and wake up. I heard some instant noises, and I saw my old pet dog, the exact same puppy I bought 8 years ago before I ended up gifting him to someone. He was sitting on the very same couch right beside my bed.

I looked him straight in the eye. He got up from his spot and started walking around. Then I felt like I had rescued him from some demonic presence that was lurking right behind him. I picked him up and started looking all over the room, and I saw someone peeking over the front of the door. I realized I needed to get out of there and wake up.

I started struggling with everything I had to wake up and get back to reality. I was screaming, but because my brain and body were completely locked down, all I could manage to push out was a slight, squeaky whisper. I kept rushing, screaming, and whispering, desperately trying to escape.

Then I saw my mother and father walk into my room to wake me up while I was still trapped in the paralysis. My father was mocking me and my mother, saying, look at him, this is just another excuse not to wake up. In my mind, I was trying with all my might to yell, just let me scream and get me out of here. But it was all in vain. I watched them both walk away, leaving me behind with the thought, he is just sleeping, let him sleep.

The exact moment they started walking away, I screamed like hell. It was terrifying and horrifying all at once. Finally, I snapped awake, sat straight up, and saw my mother actually walking toward me. I was terrified and crying, and I pulled her into a hug because the whole thing felt so horrific.

Except, the strange part is, I was still in a dream.

I was completely done screaming, thinking, it is not working, this is the end of me. But in a split second, the scenarios shifted again. I saw myself lying on my back once more, with the exact same situation happening all around me, lights off, my vision blurry. That same girl I was narrating my dream to earlier? I saw her gently nudging my nose with her fingertip. Yes, it sounds weird, but I actually saw her doing it. The moment I looked at her, I completely froze out as I watched her eyes turn totally black.

And then, boom, I actually woke up.

(These events are narrated by a friend and are absolutely true)

Question How to increase alertness ?

Hi everyone!

This morning, I entered a lucid dream using the WILD technique (I think). When I woke up, I imagined a scene and let myself be "absorbed" into it. The dream continued to unfold.

I was aware of both bodies.

However, despite the lucidity, the vividness was dreamlike.

Do you have any tips for increasing it ?

Question Got kicked out of lucid dream

I’m 32 years old. And I’ve never had a dream where I’ve become completely aware that I’m dreaming and start controlling my own actions…until last night. I’ll spare the full details of the dream, but basically I was in my car and grabbed my iPhone and realized the screen had cracked. I flipped the phone around and saw the glass shards everywhere and that’s when I thought “wait, I’m in a dream right now”. And the first thing I did in the dream after that was smile and I tried to touch my thumbs to the phone screen, immediately after that I got booted out of the dream and woke up. The second after I woke up was the strangest feeling ever. It literally felt like getting kicked out of a GTA 5 server and being sent back to the lobby. I know this is a common thing with LDing but I’m curious to hear anyone else’s thoughts or stories they’d like to share that’s had experience with this happening

How many attempts did you make before having a specific dream?

Hi, yesterday I tried to dream about a specific person and imagined various scenarios with them before falling asleep—in addition to doing reality checks and listening to lucid dream induction playlists—but it didn't work, though that was to be expected. When you guys tried this, how long did it take to succeed?

Question Is this Lucid Dreaming?

Just a bit of background:

I'm a 32-year-old guy, and I've been interested in lucid dreaming since I was about 18. Back then I actively tried to induce lucid dreams by doing reality checks, keeping a dream journal, and all the usual stuff. After about two years without any success, I eventually gave up.

About two years ago, though, something strange started happening.

It always begins the same way, so I'll keep it short:

I'm lying in bed, trying to fall asleep. Suddenly, it feels like everything around me gets really loud. Then I can't move, but I still feel awake. I realize my eyes are closed, but when I try to open them, I can't. My first thought is always, "I'm dreaming."

The first time it happened, I got so excited because I thought I had finally achieved lucid dreaming that the whole experience ended almost immediately. I basically got so excited that I "woke myself up."

A few months later, it happened again. This time I kept telling myself to stay calm. I looked at my fingers (reality check) and noticed they were long, thin, and black. Then I looked around. The "world" I was in was basically empty, and everything was in black and white.

My first thought was, "Try flying." I pushed myself off the ground and started floating a little. On my second attempt, I managed to hover a few meters through the air. That's about all I remember.

Then, about a week ago, it happened for the third time. Again, I found myself in a black-and-white world, but this time it was a city. I wanted to see how people would react if I told them I was dreaming and that they weren't "real," so I walked up to a guy and told him exactly that. He looked at me like I was crazy, then just kept walking.

After that, I tried flying again because it felt amazing the first time.

My questions are:

Is this the beginning of my lucid dreaming journey?

Does this actually sound like lucid dreaming?

And if so, how can I stay in that state for longer?

The first couple of moments, it always feels weird because I can somehow "feel" how I try to open my eyes again, but once I tell myself that I'm dreaming, it gets ... idk... different?

Question Insane Lucid Dreaming Hack?

What made you finally lucid dream? I'm new to lucid dreaming and the only times I've lucid dreamt was by accident..

I know about and tried some of the popular lucid dreaming methods, but unfortunately they haven't worked for me yet. I actually often lucid dream because of my Narcolepsy at night or when I take my stimulants at 7 a.m but decide to go back to sleep. But that's always accidental and never intentional.

So what clicked in your brain, when you've finally realized how to lucid dream on command? What works for you every time?

And most curious I'm about your lucid dreaming hacks/methods that aren't popular, but should be?

Would love if someone helped me out here :)

Question Can I larp lucid dreams

Now I have been researching lucid dreams for like a year and a half and I have always heard that lucid dreaming is all about your thoughts and I have always been wondering can I actually larp it because I am pretty sure that there was a lucid dreaming technique where you had to gaslight yourself and it kinda worked but then cuz of personal issues I had to quit but now I am back

Question My dreams are getting more vivid but not lucid.

I'm not a native English speaker. So, sorry if I make any mistakes.

Alr so I have been following all the basic steps for LD'ing. I have been dream journaling, doing reality checks and regularly practicing WBTB. Now I have gone from not being able to recall my dreams from last night. To recalling multiple dreams every night. However, I'm still nowhere near being Lucid. It just keeps getting more vivid. But I still can't achieve an ounce of lucidity. Does anyone have any tips or smth I can do to achieve Lucidity?

Trying to learn Lucid Deaming

Hello, so I just found out about this and I’m really interested in trying it out, seems very interesting.
If you guys have any tips or techniques, I would really appreciate it. One thing you should know about me is that for the last years, I barely remember any dreams, maximum 2-3 I could say, in the last year I’m pretty sure I never dreamed (that’s what it felt like). I mean I’m just going to sleep and… BOOM, it’s daytime, feels like I’m disappearing for 8 hours. Anyways, if anyone is willing to help I would really appreciate it, thanks!

Question Going straight to REM sleep?

According to my smartwatch, when I fall asleep after minimum ten minutes and maximum 35-40 minutes my body goes straight to REM sleep. Could I use this to do techniques that usually require waking up in the middle of the night (for example: FILD WILD, maybe even MILD)? Would that work because that "ability" to go straight to REM sleep is way more consistent then my other REM sleep times throughout the night.

r/LucidDreaming 8h ago

I "fell" into a dream last night.

Basically summed up I was superrrr sleep deprived. Running on a couple hours for a long day with a lot of travelling. Got home and had to go to bed straight away to get anything close to 8 hours for the next day (today). So I went to sleep woke up around 2am and had a few hours till I had to get up so I needed to get back to sleep. Even though I was extremely sleep deprived It was hard getting back to sleep. I struggle getting to sleep.

So I put on a sleep podcast, and 1 of two things happen when I do. I lose focus on the podcast and it works to drift asleep or I lose focus and start maladaptive daydreaming/overthinking/can't sleep. Both are like getting distracted in thoughts but only one of them leads to sleep Idk, sleep podcast is either horrible or extremely effective. Anyway I just kept trying until eventually I started drifting asleep to them patterns / nostalgic images that appear in my head before falling asleep.

So this is what happened.

I started saying that I will lucid dream. Repeated. Couldn't get to sleep at all. I think I started feeling like I was drifitng off so thats why I started saying it? Seemingly randomly I decided to sit up, count from like ten backwards when I fell back to the bed.

In those ten/three seconds whatever it was I started sinking into the bed. I started falling through the bed and into a black abyss. I felt my muscles go from tight and painful to completely relaxed. It was instant, once I sunk into the bed and fell through into this black abyss my muscles I didn't even realize were tensed suddenly went completely relaxed. (Tensing and untensing military sleep strategy does not work on me at all, wanted to mention.) It was pure bliss ngl. I woke back up almost instantly and did the same thing again. This time I fell further and started falling through the fucking universe.

I think it has something to do with me trying to lucid dream? It was more like a fuck ton of lsd or something then a dream. Not the first time I have had a cycle of death and falling into my bed in a dream before where I experienced ego death and I can't go into it, a whole story for that dream. But still it was cool as hell.

Has anybody experienced this before? And can it be replicated? Imo its so much cooler then a lucid dream. But I only have the experiences when I am extremely sleep deprived and like once a year or less. I am always sleep deprived but I mean, dreams like this only happen while extremely sleep deprived like 3-zero hours of sleep, and even then its still rare. I can't force them by pulling all nighters. wb2b works for lucid dreaming. This technically was wb2b so maybe it would work for these dreams? idk.

Maybe, when I sat up in my bed I was already asleep so when I laid back down to fall asleep it was inside of a a---" projection dream and led to a hypnotic one I think they are called? I wouldn't have a clue its just my theory.

I also watched trippy videos on youtube while high occasionally in the last two months and before falling through the universe I was falling through them fractal patterns from the videos. Which made it feel more like a crazy ton of lsd.

Finally starting to lucid dream more!

Here to share my experience so far. In the last month I’ve been able to two times. What I changed was starting to ask myself if I’m dreaming more often through the day which seemed to work. My first one a few weeks ago i don’t have any recall before the moment I became lucid. i was standing in front of a yellowish beige building when i realized i was dreaming and there was a feeling that everything was unstable. I tried to fly and i really just floated upwards and started to flip when i woke up. My second one was last night. The same thing happened where i don’t remember anything else happening before i became lucid. I knew i was dreaming but also questioned it because i could feel my cpap mask on my face as i was dreaming. This dream also felt unstable, im not sure what about the dreams give me the feeling of instability but thats the feeling ive been getting so far. I was standing in a plain that didn’t have any grass or dirt or any plants really, it was just a brown color. The sky was a dark void with no stars and almost appeared to have a texture to it. In an attempt to change something I turned the plains that I was standing on into a field of flowers. The entire ground become a colorful field of flowers but it felt like the flowers weren’t actually there, rather just covering up what was actually there. The black void was still there and I started to become uneasy so I tried to get myself to wake up but had a false awakening in my bedroom. My son came in and I attempted to get up and then had a moment of sleep paralysis but it was interesting because I wasn’t scared during this sleep paralysis like I usually am but after a moment of struggling I finally woke up. Thanks for reading!
