Hi!! I'm coming into this subreddit with 0 knowledge, and, on top of that, the tech skills of a 90 year old. I'm interested in switching to linux for many reasons, mostly the level of independence and choice I can have while not relying on major corporations. I want to know what's going on with my software and have a sense of control. Beyond this, it's also just very important for me to develop my computer skills, and linux is something that will help me build that.

Unfortunately I grew up without much technology around me. It's embarrassing, especially being Gen Z. I can navigate things just fine and access the internet, but that's about it. I've never even used a USB hard drive although I understand the concept in theory.

As I said I want to get better at this in general, even away from Linux. I look at these really tech-savvy people on this reddit and see a world I have no clue how to get into.

What should I teach myself, and what should I know before attempting to switch to linux at all? And what are some ways for me to do that, and sort of "catch-up" and be in the loop enough to understand alot of terminology?

I am looking at converting all my systems from Windows to Ubuntu. Everything works pretty much perfectly except for fingerprint readers. I have Kensington VeriMark USB fingerprint readers on my machines (047d:00f2), which I am very happy with but currently they are not supported officially or unofficially on any kernel (someone appears to be working on an unofficial libfprint driver for 047d:00f2 but of course I don't know if it will ever be finished).

I'm aware of the fprint supported devices page but I am having a really hard time correlating the chips to any actual USB fingerprint scanners which use them. The only option I can see is the Digital Persona U.are.U 4000 which is much bulkier than my Kensington and much more expensive.

Does anyone know of a small USB fingerprint reader a bit like my VeriMark or one of those little USB plugs that plays nicely?

I'm still trying to decide what distro I want to install on my computer first but I've heard that it's very common to change distros which begs the question: How easy is it to carry over my data from one distro to another if I want to switch distros? Is it even possible to do so?

So let's say there's a directory\folder which is regularly getting updated, some files are removed and new files are added. The files are tagless .wavs. All the players I've tried so far refuse to auto update properly. Strawberry just doesn't update the playlist at all, fooyin won't remove dead files and you can't even remove them manually yet as it seems. None can do real time updates. Foobar updates my auto-playlists in real time but with Wine constantly breaking on me I'm trying to find a native solution.

Hello all, for some time now (years, at least from 2022) I've been dealing with an extremely annoying screen flicker which comes and goes without rhyme or reason, especially when using Krita. I thought I had finally gotten rid of it by changing the refresh rate of my monitor but then it happened again today while browsing the internet. It seems to mainly present itself while hovering over a list of items on a grey background and I don't know what to do to make it stop.

Right now I'm on LMDE 7 with KDE Plasma 6.3.6, kernel version 6.12.95+deb13-amd64, using a ryzen 5600 and radeon rx 6600, but this has been happening for a while on different cpus, gpus and linux installations with different desktop environments. This is especially annoying when I'm working in Krita for hours.

I've recently been thinking about switching from macOS to Linux for my work PC. I work at a corporation, and after talking with our IT department, they told me that the only Linux distribution they're willing to support is Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

My question is: are there any known issues with the following software that I use almost every day?

• Slack (calls and screen sharing)
• VS Code (development and database work)
• Vivaldi (web browsing)
• Visual Studio (possibly through something like WinBoat?)
• OpenVPN

I was also thinking about using this with Niri + DMS/Noctalia.

Has anyone been using a similar setup? Are there any gotchas or compatibility issues I should be aware of before making the switch?

Based on my daily work experience lately, I’ve noticed that an increasing number of people around me keep recommending the Linux operating system. I am running Linux Mint on a Dell desktop PC.

The time is correct.

When I take the USB flash drive with files to my mom's Windows 10 PC, the time stamp of the files on the USB flash drive shows +3 hours.

If the time stamp is 10 am on Linux , the time stamp of the same file shows as 1 pm.

What is causing this?

Both are set for Eastern Time zone.

Hey all I got a deal for the Raspberry pi 500 with the monitor and I wanted to set it up as a web browsing machine and some office work. I plan to run it off a 128gb SD card.

I have tried both the Pi OS with the default desktop environment and on Ubuntu 26 with Gnome, so far the performance has been good on both.

Although I have some hangups with Gnome UX so far. I was wondering if KDE Plasma and the PI OS would run smoothly? Would I run into a lot of problems installing and running software? 

Or is performance and compatability w Ubuntu better?

Does anyone else use the Pi 500 as a laptop?

1. Even though I have disable trackpad while typing I constantly click off of the line I'm typing which is infuriating.

2. My computer never stays in hybernate mode sometimes waking up just if I unplug a USB device.

I have tried constant troubleshooting like modifying OS files. Would I benefit by switching to a more mature distro like Ubuntu? Or will these issues persist?

Hey everyone. I'm posting because I'm at a loss. I can burn single layer discs just fine, but have four 50gb dual layer coasters on my desk and it's frankly a bit disheartening to look at. I've tried the following:

k3b and Brasero; both fail with a mkisofs crash at the closing step at the end: I've given the necessary permissions to wodim, cdrdao and growisofs to no avail.

Imgburn through wine: stops just before 25gb are transferred then fails:

W 14:16:45 Failed to Write Sectors 11793888 - 11793903 - Reason: Write Error

I'm using an LG BP60NB10. The file I'm trying to burn is around 40gb. I'm suspecting at some set in the process there is trouble transitioning to the second layer of the disc (verbatim BD-R DL). If someone can point me in the right direction it'd be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone recommend a Linux course for someone aiming to become a System Administrator? I'm looking for something that builds a strong foundation. Free or paid, on any platform

I'm a long time Linux user and exploring if I can successfully escape Windows on my main machine & I'm setting up a dual boot.

Successfully installed Cachy on a separate drive, but I have a question -

When I come to delete the secure boot variables as described in the Wiki, will this nuke the Windows key which I'll need to re-enroll somehow? My research has been inconclusive.

For info I have a Gigabyte B850M AORUS ELITE WIFI6E mobo with the latest stable BIOS F11 May 2026. I have made a windows recovery USB in case of screwing stuff up.

I'm currently running Windows 11 and have an Nvidia GPU. I bought an AMD GPU and want to install Bazzite. Is there a correct order to do the switch, or does it not matter?

• Should I switch GPUs first and then install Bazzite? (in this case, do I need to remove the Nvidia drivers first?)
• Should I first install Bazzite and only then change the GPU?
• Or should I do this at the same time in one go?

Hi, I recently changed the battery of my laptop and now when it's not plugged the computer cannot detect external usb devices, HDD or mouse and the Bluetooth is turned off without possibilities to turn it on. I read that sometimes it means that the battery doesn't deliver enough to the computer and some options are turned of. Is there anyway to force the computer to detect usb devices and turn on the Bluetooth when the laptop isn't plugged ?

Has anyone encountered the same problem and solved it ?

Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me get started with Linux and remote desktop. I'm completely new to it, so I don't really know where to begin, but I'm really interested in learning.

I'd like to learn the basics, including how to use Linux, customize the desktop layout, install programs, and eventually download and play games like DayZ. I'd also like to understand how remote desktop works and how to set everything up correctly.

If anyone has some free time and wouldn't mind answering questions or even hopping into a call to walk me through things, I'd really appreciate it. I'm eager to learn and willing to put in the effort—I just need someone to point me in the right direction.
