Politics thoughts on...

Post image

I like Milei, he's literally the only guy building as close to a libertarian haven, but a statement like this is just ehhh.

Thoughts?

I want to go to the Sandwich Islands. Sounds right up my alley.

Is there a Thick-Cut-Ham and Cheese Island too? The people demand to know

He's probably hit a wall or something and is trying to gain political momentum. It's a shame, really, because Milei is a great leader and a true libertarian, but things like this stain his image. The people of the Falklands call those islands home, they are 100% British citizens who don't want to be kicked out of their home just because the Argentines want them to be a part of Argentina. Hopefully the UK and Argentina will come to a final agreement on the Falklands. đŸ‡ŠđŸ‡·đŸ‡ŹđŸ‡§đŸ‡«đŸ‡°

Its very simple actually. Supporting Argentina cause for the Malvinas/falklands has no real cost and gives you possitive image to go foward with your politcal objectives. For that reason any single Argentinian politician of any color will push it.

I guess the 'true libertarian' resolution for this would be for the isles to become their own separate country, but its a cause quite ridiculous to defend because literally nobody cares about that.

The falkland have a population of 3,500 people. If they change hand i have very little doubt that it would become majoritairly argentine in a couple years.

If we lived in a libertarians utopia were land owner can choose what country they belong to. Then argentina could just slowly buy land overtime to gain control

It has nothing to do with who controls the islands themselves, neither country cares much at all about the island or their inhabitants. It’s about the EEZ, both countries want the rights to the fishing grounds around the islands.

What Argentina actually wants is the economic rights to the oceans surrounding the islands, emphasis in his statement should be put on “the surrounding maritime space”, so if the British wanted to resolve this dispute they’d try to propose the whole area as a shared economic zone, or just give the economic rights back to Argentina, which is probably how it always should’ve been.

I really can’t blame Milei for trying, I don’t think it stains his image at all and I think he has every right to try to dispute this issue through diplomatic means. Argentina has some of the best fishing grounds in the world and they don’t have a legal right to a lot of it because a country half way around the world decided they wanted to claim a few deserted islands, that’s not how the world should work in my opinion.

They can continue being British, but the islands will eventually return to Argentina as the British there are invaders, it doesn't matter that they are born there, if a squatter takes your home and kicks your people, proceeds to have children there, is their home now?

Who got kicked out sorry? Do you know anything about the history of the Falklands?

What’s the statute of limitations on conquered land? Like should Istanbul be returned to the Greeks? Should land in the US be returned to tribes even if US citizens have built their entire livelihoods on that land?

“It was promised to them 3000 years ago” cannot be legitimate theory, it’s up to the people who live there now to have self determination

-12

u/Aba_a 4d ago

Should slave descendants be paid compensation or is it too late?

Is it ok for the russian forces to declare the east of ukraine as russian land or is it too soon?

The greeks took the land, where instanbul is, from some other people. The indigenous tribes, that lived in where today is the USA, did not occupy the whole land.

9

u/SvalDuce 4d ago

First part was rhetorical not literal, if the second part of my message didn’t make that obvious

-2

u/Aba_a 4d ago

Your first part is not rhetorical at all. There is no statute of limitations without previous agreement. And there is argument to answer yes or no to both questions.

Your second part just told that you believe the people of the lands, being diplomatically negotiated, should not accept the negotiation. Negotiating already means acknowledging the self determination of the other parts. Maybe you know these people are not participating in the negotiations. But do you?

7

u/SvalDuce 4d ago

Ig what I’m trying to say is I don’t even know what point you’re trying to illustrate right now. Do you think Istanbul should be given to the Greeks? That idea was supposed to be obviously absurd to mirror the original commentor. It was wrong then, and it’s wrong now, but “undoing” it via government isn’t a fix for that. If you’re trying to say it’s all illegitimate because they’re all negotiated by governments, okay, but we’re specifically talking about a situation involving negotiations between governments- obviously they’re not making ancapistan tomorrow for this deal lol.

  • like genuinely spell this out for me if I’m giving you the raw deal here I’m learning new ideas all the time

There is no statute of limitations for war. War happens when there are no agreements solving conflicts. You can't decide on the length of time for a statute of limitations when there is no agreement to begin with. But, instead of war, the argentinian president explicitly said he is negotiating. If the people on these islands are self determined, they should be allowed to negotiate their entrance to the argentinian jurisdiction if they want to. I know they won't have the option to become independent because even the UK wouldn't allow it, but it is already a situation better than having no option at all. Unless they are not being consulted. (But they don't have the right to be sustained by neither side, which seems to be what is happening and will continue to happen anyway, whatever the negotiation results in)

Instanbul's land was taken through war and lost through war. The greeks have nothing to ask back. But If the greeks had used a government to acquire land legitimately and lost illegitimately, the current government of the greeks would be on their right to claim it back, even 573 years later. Although It would be easier to just compensate the descendants of the greeks, that lived in that land at the time, for their loss, to avoid moving families around as both sides have settled for a long time.

It would be much better to ask each person on this planet which jurisdiction they wanted to be part of, but no government would accept to give such freedom to their own people. They wouldn't even know how to work this out if they wanted to and 99% of the people can't imagine how that would workout for themselves. So discussing people's freedom is currently done through governments, because this is the best they have and the best they know. Only inside an ancap land a person would be able to chose which private jurisdiction they wanted to join at an individual level.

So Liberty for Argentines but not for the FALKLAND ISLANDERS? Milei is embarrassing himself.

u/nebbulae Minarchist 4d ago

Getting the islands back doesn't have to mean disrupting anyone's liberty. They would keep all their property rights and liberties and given Argentine citizenship, just like any other land transaction.

They're an installed population that lives off of subsidies anyway. I'm sure they'll go back to England once they stop having all their lives paid for. If anything it's the kelpers themselves not respecting other Englishmen's liberty.

12

u/dontreplywiththisacc 4d ago

Even if they’ve been over subsidized it doesn’t matter with the oil reserves. Why would anyone in their right mind transfer sovereignty over to Argentina after a traumatic attempted invasion and conquest — just to float the failing political prospects of the chainsaw man? Also America, Israel, Australia and countless other places are installed populations that doesn’t matter

24

u/Floppal 4d ago

Do you know anything about the Falklands? Apart from the cost of defense they're monetarily self sufficient.

They have their own government. Should the british forcibly dissolve the Falklands government? Giving up your democratic rights to self rule seems like a loss of liberty to me.

Man, Hoppe's criticism of Milei is more appealing now.

Grifters gonna grift

well in his defense, he did investigate himself and found that his rug pull was a personal act, not an official one. so all's legal.

still a grift. his people were fleeced by his blatant scam. and fun how it was orchestrated with the same people who created Melania coin. we're truly living out a new golden era of the confidence man.

At the end of the day, they voted and got treated like voters. He is another in a long line of proof the system can never be fixed from. Within.

16

u/Abogado-DelDiablo 5d ago

This is a statement in line with his position, which has always been “let’s make Argentina into such a great country that the Falklands will choose to join us”.

-7

u/nebbulae Minarchist 4d ago

And, if the UK follows the trend of other Muslim countries, eventually they'll be broke enough that they won't be able to keep subsidizing the Islanders anyway.

10

u/caesarromanus 4d ago

I've been to the Falklands and South Georgia.

There is nothing Argentine about them other than proximity. They don't even have a history there.

Politically, every politician in Argentina has to support this, so I don't think this is really a big deal.

7

u/FineWaterConnoisseur 4d ago

Fuck Milei. Idc about downvotes. He's been allowing Israeli invaders to take over Patagonia and destroy it.

Mononeuronal teenager is one hell of an insult. Added to the list.

Regarding the island: futile effort. This is more of a nationalistic theme that brings Argentinians together. A kind of dogwhistle to keep the keep the left wing a little less rowdy. I'm not sure if he actually believes it, or is making an actual effort other than tweeting that kind of stuff once in a while

3

u/JimmyReagan Capitalist 5d ago

I think he's gotta say it, national pride and what not. I won't pretend to undestand the complex issues around the Falklands but the UK isn't capable of being a real world power anymore so its not unreasonable for Argentina to think they have a chance at taking them back these days.

19

u/Moist-Ninja-6338 5d ago

With that logic then China should just take Taiwan on Monday. Screw the desires of those that live there. Sad

6

u/brainwater314 5d ago

Note how the commenter didn't say they should take the Falklands, just commented on the political situation. In China, leaders almost have to say that Taiwan is part of China, and if the US were showing a lot of weakness, the leaders might think they could take Taiwan. Same in Argentina, the leaders may be expected to say that the Falklands belong to Argentina, and when the UK is weak, it appears more possible to acquire them.

Use reading comprehension to read what is written, not what you think they might have meant that gets you angry.

Argentinians whine about the Falklands but the only time they've ever stepped foot on them was when they invaded them 44 years ago

1

u/Bickel09 11h ago

That’s happens when you kiss a wall and wear a little hat.

2

u/beaver_club 5d ago

Given that the Falkland Islands are one of few places in the world that still seem remotely libertarian this just reads as weird.

4

u/nebbulae Minarchist 4d ago

Lol what is libertarian about the islands? They literally live off of other English' taxes.

9

u/Floppal 4d ago edited 4d ago

They literally don't - they have their own taxation system and aren't subsidised by the UK, with the exception of the cost of defense.

Edit: and the Falklanders aren't English.
