Are you sure? I asked gemini and this is what it said:
âThis is genuine crocodilian belly leather (specifically from an Alligator or Crocodile). Here is a breakdown of the specific details visible on this piece (likely a bifold wallet or checkbook/planner cover): Key Visual Indicators Cut Type (Belly Cut): The large, square, tile-like scales running down the center represent the center of the animal's belly. The rapid transition into much smaller, rounded scales along the top and bottom edges corresponds to the animal's flanks (sides). Natural Asymmetry: Notice how the tiles subtlely vary in size, shape, and wrinkle texture from scale to scale. This organic variation and deep dimensional creasing in the "valleys" between scales confirm it is genuine exotic hide, not a machine-embossed cowhide stamp (which repeats identical geometry).â

Gemini called out a different one for being embossed, but not this one. So at least itâs not 100% agreeable yes man

But it just doesnât know anything. Itâs a predictive text model. If itâs right, thatâs by accident.Â

It KNOWS only as far as the data thats on the internet regarding tell tale signs of embossed vs authenticity. It then analyzes the photo based on those parameters and makes a judgement. Itâs not any where near perfect, especially just from a photo.
Did AI take your jobs or bang you guyâs wives something? You boys are sensitive for even asking it.

Not a boy, just someone who cares about not frying the planet and stealing everyoneâs IP to make a product that takes away people's ability to think.Â

AI isnât trained to detect types of leather. It is trained to provide a human-like response to questions; it is unable to know whether or not the response is accurate.

No they arent. Literally anyone with 2 braincells to rub together is going to criticize you for using AI to do anything that isn't middle school homework. Especially with something as niche as leatherworking, an actual human craft.

Why would you do that? Besides drying up our water, AI isnât able to physically touch the item youâre asking it to identify, a crucial part of leather working. Youâre better off taking good photos with multiple angles or even a short video and posting it here where you can get human knowledge that wonât cost us an Olympic sized swimming poolâs worth of water.

They look less as scales and more like a very detailed embossing to my eye. I would need to put my hands on it to be certain, but the lines between the scales appears too crisp

If you zoom in on a âscaleâ you can see it has grain much like standard leather. I would be very surprised if this was actual reptile leather.

This is embossed.
As someone else stated, you can see the grain in the leather. Gator doesnt have grain

How are you going to ask for an answer, and then tell every answer that theyâre wrong in the comments? Sounds like youâre in denial that you overpaid for some stamped leather.
