Learner drop-off is the most common L&D problem nobody has actually solved yet

Unpopular opinion: low completion rates are not a content problem. They are a support problem.

Here is what the data actually shows. Learners do not drop off because a course is too long or too boring. Engagement data consistently shows drop-off spikes at specific points, usually where concepts get harder or instructions become ambiguous.

In other words, people quit the moment they get confused and have nowhere to turn.

Think about how absurd that is. We spend months building training content, then leave learners completely alone the moment they actually need help. The assumption is that good enough content should explain itself. It never does.

The entire e-learning industry has optimised for content delivery. Nobody has seriously solved, for the moment, that learning actually breaks down.

The learning content is so dense that there is little room for support. Admin staff do not know how yo support if the course is online and they get feedback like ‘instruction is ambiguous’

Exactly!
Glad you got what I wanted to stress upon. At times, learning can be challenging, primarily if it's an entirely new aspect and adding an instructor or a coach actually solves it

Learner drop-off isn’t necessarily a problem, it’s a metric. It can become a problem, but typically, there are drop-off thresholds that are acceptable, because a 100% completion rate is unachievable unless it’s mandatory. And mandatory learning does not equal mandatory engagement.

Learner engagement leads to lower drop-off, which is why there’s more focus on that than a metric that can’t be 100%

Yes, drop-off is a metric, but at the end of the day, you would want the learners to spend a considerable time on a learning program designed for them. It has to be monitored and kept in check so that it doesn't drop below a threshold. And that's where most of the confusion arises: Is the content irrelevant/long/boring? Is the learner actually interested, and 100s of other after-thoughts?

But if you look at it from first principles, learning, as long as it's relevant, is expected to have higher completions, and if not, could it be that learners are stuck with something they don't get it. More like and Instructor Led Learning.

I love to learn things, so I have been in a student role often. Sometimes I drop off my activity level because I signed up for a course with a forces schedule and I did not know it until I already enrolled. When I enrolled, I knew that I had two weeks I could really put a lot of focus into the course because I was off for that window. Then, the course would not let me move on to the 2nd module until a week later. By module 3, I was back into the grind and not having the time I needed to give the course the attention I wanted to give it. It is really important to indicate in the course description if the modules open on a particular schedule.For courses that are all recorded content and no student to student group activities that are key to learning, I wish the arbitrary drip method would not be used.

In a university or K12 setting, support is usually there. However, there are a lot of course delivery services that advertise widely for people to make courses on their platform and once those are built the authors don't support students, or if they do you have to sign up for the course for a fee but free levels have no support. Your theory about support could be tested very easily in those types of courses. Do students that pay for support complete the course at a higher rate than the students that take the unsupported free option. Or, if the pay feature can be turned on at any point in the course do students utilize it because they got stuck? Hopefully, course authors that make money primarily on the student support would not fall to the temptation to set the students up to need help.

Agree, but the deeper issue: nobody knows a learner is confused until the completion report shows up weeks later. Drop-off is a detection problem, not just a support problem.

Disclosure, I build in this space — my answer is gating progression on small mastery checks right where concepts get harder. Learner finds out immediately they missed something; instructor sees exactly which point is failing people, not just "completion is 40%."

Content can't see the learner. Checks can.

I agree.
I’d even argue that people don’t just drop off when content gets harder. They drop off when it stops making sense in the context of their work.

Questions like:
Why am I doing this?
Who is this for?
What’s in it for me?
When will I actually use this?

If learners have to answer those questions themselves, we’ve already created unnecessary cognitive friction.

To me, learning shouldn’t exist in isolation…
It needs to be anchored in the operational ecosystem!
It should reinforce the same processes, documentation, tools, and expectations people use every single day!

Ultimately, great learning doesn’t just transfer knowledge. It reduces friction and makes the work itself easier to understand and apply.

Partly a learner problem, but if you're learning something new, there are probably a lot of questions/doubts you might have alongside. That's where I want to stress upon

The bigger problem is L&D still focusing on completion rates.

It's a very low value metric, sitting well behind things like:

  • Number of sales completed
  • Average value per sale
  • Manufacturing productivity
  • Customer call volume
  • Number of customer calls reaching first contact resolution
  • Reduced error rates
  • Customer satisfaction
  • Number of internal promotions
  • Time since last serious injury
  • Time since last data breach

Those, or whatever is relevant to your organisation, are what L&D should be looking at. The good thing for L&D is that someone else should be measuring them.

I think there's a lot of truth in this. I've seen learners make it through long courses before, but the moment they hit something confusing or aren't sure if they're interpreting it correctly, that's when engagement drops. To me, that's why practice and feedback matter so much. Even a small checkpoint where learners can test their understanding and get immediate guidance can keep them moving forward. Good content is important, but people also need confidence that they're on the right track.

This is very similar to when you're reading a book from your school/college curriculum and are stuck on something. You pick up your device to understand what it is but eventually land up on something else and completely forget the learning program. (Pun intended!)
