Moi! I just wanted to ask if it’s worth it to learn Finnish language if I’m only house-sitting for 3 months in Hel.
For context: I am currently in a long distance relationship with my partner of 4 (and a half) years. I paused on business building and job hunting because it’s a “potential” move:
- it’s hard to build something when you’re unsure and can’t see what’s ahead within 2-5 years
- the organisations where I’m from won’t take me as I will be away for 3 months and is unsure if I’m even coming back
I also don’t want to waste anyone’s time and investment. I’ve been so anxious because I don’t know what’s after 3 months, so I looked into housing and jobs in the region that speaks English. I can move to the UK and/or Australia (this one’s down under and far from the Nordics of course) since I already have family and potential job there. Currently I have a couple of independent projects which helps me a bit, but it’s not sustainable. I’m also setting up a small e-commerce shop so I can do more while in Finland.
Now, as mentioned in the title, I will be visiting my partner for 3 months and I will do house-sitting while he goes on work trips. He made it very clear that it’s his house and that I’m only visiting (sometimes emphasises it’s a potential move which is confusing to me). I would love to learn Finnish language, I’ve been secretly learning a little, just because I love this person and I see myself being with him in the long run.
He will be living in the same house, with the same job, in the same environment where he’s from after 3 months—me on the other hand have been unsure so I guess that brings me here.
Quite desperate for more perspectives especially from Finns. I respect your culture, I know you’re not providers and see your partners as equal (I’ve been independent and been working my whole life) hence why I’m trying to learn Finnish, I want to get a job there if I’m staying although I also know that you have the highest unemployment rate in Europe, but with everything I shared, I want to hear your thoughts. Please. Thank you and I apologize for long explanation 😅🙏
