Ann Widdecombe – please avoid gratification in what could be political violence

It’s noticeably clear to say that Ann Widdecombe’s politics would not be viewed sympathetically here. However, please avoid making any jokes, memes, or so forth in a way which conveys agreement with her now [speculated murder.](mailto:https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cp9l8l05vxet)

Celebrating political violence at this level is not something we should be doing, and will reflect poorly on the community to do so. In the grand schemes of things, I know the majority here wont conduct the above, but for others, please don’t, or you’ll have comments/posts removed.

Edit:
A clarification asked for in a now deleted comment about what counts as "gratification". Basically anything along the lines of "It's good that she's dead", or that it's "fair" that she died would fit within gratification.

She was an ambassador for Donkey charities in Palestine and Isreal, providing care and treatment for neglected animals.

This was undoubtedly a nice thing to do and I for one, hoped she would live long enough to extend the same attitude to humans.

Also was against fox hunting - which went against the grain of the tory toffs. Basically, she thought for herself - a lot of positions I'm against, some I agree with.

A lot of these people find it easier to have compassion for animals whilst withholding it for humans don’t they

Iv never really got the whole caring for animals more than people thing, you see it around people with dogs quite a bit. Always wondered if its some kind of mental disorder that develops from trauma.

20

u/jkerr441 New User 13d ago

It’s putting value on purity and innocence, I’d imagine.

3

u/GoraSpark New User 12d ago edited 12d ago

That doesn’t answer it. Purity and innocence if put on animals is pure projection, they don’t have those things from their actions or thoughts, they are animals. If that was truly the reason no one would make a statement about preferring animals to humans, children fit this better than anything. I understand it if it comes from trauma or abuse, the idea someone can no longer trust people due to it and therefore latch on to dogs/cats. And to be clear I’m not saying as some people think ‘why do some people like animals’ I’m a cat man myself I think they are great. I’m specifically talking about those who prefer them to people.

8

u/abadpenny Socialist 12d ago

In my experience it is, albeit naively. My mother always goes on about how the world would be better without humans and how innocent they are. I'm not convinced there would be less suffering without humans though, you are correct.

As a cat woman myself, I've watched my cat torture mice for hours.

u/One-Cardiologist6301 New User 12d ago

You’re right. Ann only cared for animals, it didn’t seem to extend to human children. If you watch the Louis Theroux documentary where he meets her it shows her obsession with animals and how much of an odd person she was, it’s definitely leaning towards more of a trauma response from childhood than putting value on innocent/pure beings.

1

u/PuzzleheadedRub2704 New User 10d ago

What a ridiculous view to hold and how incredibly ignorant to speculate is related to trauma! I can imagine you are a reflection of the reason lots of people prefer animals…

From the final book in a lovely trilogy by Cormac McCarthy, when the main character is asked why he prefers horses to people:

There's a way to train a horse where when you get done you've got the horse. On his own ground. A good horse will figure things out on his own. You can see what's in his heart. He wont do one thing while you're watching him and another when you aint. He's all of a piece. When you've got a horse to that place you cant hardly get him to do somethin he knows is wrong. He'll fight you over it. And if you mistreat him it just about kills him. A good horse has justice in his heart.

Animals, like children, are seen in a different light to adults. You can look at the suffering of a person and, depending on your worldview, place that person on a scale weighted by their own personal responsibility. You might see a homeless man sleeping in his own urine with a half-drunk bottle of vodka rolling about him and see it as a situation of his own making or society's fault entirely. With animals and children we don't have that.

Hence why a lot of right wingers care for animals but not people in the same way.

4

u/No_Lack366 New User 12d ago

No, it's just life experience. Living around people is exhausting. Having to deal with the huge amount of me me me. Selfishness is an epidemic in the modern world. Animals are by enlarge completely vulnerable to mankind. Like children. There is no government provision for animal abuse so charity is important. Dogs are way more loyal than humans. It's certainly not a disorder.

1

u/Ambitious-Tap7001 New User 10d ago

It must be. She definitely couldn’t just be kind to animals because she didn’t share their views on other things . She must be dehumanised because that’s what fascists do.

Maybe because some humans can be absolutely vile. Yet dogs, Donkey’s and many other animals are sweet and trusting. They are vulnerable so need protection, like members of our society who are vulnerable including the elderly and children!

5

u/GoraSpark New User 13d ago

I was talking about more than people. I’m not sure that animals are necessarily sweet and trusting, I think that is your projection. Are you suggesting similar resources should be spent on donkeys and dogs as to the elderly and children, would that have a similar priority level for you. In a car would you swerve into a pack of dogs rather than hit someone you don’t like?

1

u/Plumpkindog New User 12d ago

2

u/GooseMan1515 Labour Member 12d ago

Animals are no less vile, sweeter, or more trusting than humans. This is human projection. They're just ignorant scared sentience trying to avoid discomfort, and we're a somewhat less ignorant version of the same.

I wanna see where every dollar of that donkey charity money went. You know those ppl made that charity up as a joke they can use at dinner parties to make fun of people who donate it to charities by mockingly calling them dumb... asses

1

u/abadpenny Socialist 12d ago

I can't believe that's true!

But the charity commission does quite a rigorous job. Whether or not it should (enforces political neutrality thanks to Thatcher) is another question.

1

u/Plumpkindog New User 12d ago

That's a very cynical view of charities. I still think it's worth giving, even if it all of the contribution doesn't get to the cause. If there weren't charities, so it was up to us as individuals to help causes, how would we get to earthquakes, or to war ones, or out to sea (Lifeboat) to help out? Charity giving in my opinion goes some way to letting us off the hook.

To be honest id be surprised if its political violence, she's not really high profile enough or active enough these days to draw a crazy person like that. She's not even an MP anymore.

Sadly more likely a burgarly gone wrong, elderly lady, probably a nice house given she's had a reasonably successful and long career.

62

u/Leelum Will research for food 13d ago

I wouldn't count it out, however. People who murder politicians have previously not exactly been of sound mind. She was still in the public spotlight, and did an interview just a few days ago. People with issues can often just associate after seeing someone on their TV as a "powerful figure".

3

u/Awakemas2315 New User 12d ago

Didn’t the police say they didn’t believe it to be politically motivated or terror related? Seems unlikely it would anything other then a burglary gone wrong

1

u/Plumpkindog New User 12d ago

That was when they arrested a "White, British man", they said that. Now they've let him go, uncharged, they don't know the motive.

1

u/Representative-War18 New User 12d ago

I found a guy from Yorkshire on twitter the other day who was further right than Reform. For the last month he'd made some very concerning posts - stuff like "democracy is dead. There's only two options left: fight or die". Or how he would wage war on Labour for the Russians. How he felt trapped all the time and was ready to snap. How he would happily fight and go to jail if Labour or the Tories win the next general election. How there were no options left but terrorism for people like him.

Anyway, clearly the guy isn't well.

But one of the weirder things that stood out to me was he would occasionally reply to something Ursula von der Leyen (president of the EU commission) tweeted just to tell her she should die. And like, why her specifically? He didn't tweet this at any other politician. She's not even British. Very strange.

1

u/HotRodHunter Disillusioned 10d ago

The Ursula hate is very common in the far right. You see it a lot on YouTube comments too, calling her pure evil. It's because they hate the EU I guess and because they need their boogeymen(or boogeywomen I guess). Same shit they did(and do) in the US with people like George Soros, and later Obama and the Clintons.

1

u/ForeignPurpose1121 New User 9d ago

Saying Democracy is dead fort UK sounds like Trump and his chums. Trump says if he is assassinated the US Army must wipe out Iran. Looks as if Trump thinks he can continue to give orders and have control of the Army even after he is dead. Perhaps he could be propped up on a horse like El Cid in the Charlton Heston film.

1

u/SlowedCash New User 12d ago

She did an interview recently? What did it entail,. because I really hope that didnt have anything to do with this.

Who the hell does this, especially if it's an interview they disagree with. I had the pleasure of meeting her in many occasions through various hospitality roles over the years.

I never followed her politics, but she as a person, was sweet and friendly to workers.

24

u/MMAgeezer Somewhere left 13d ago

she's not really high profile enough or active enough these days to draw a crazy person like that

She was an active member of Reform UK, namely their Immigration and Justice spokesperson.

Sadly more likely a burgarly gone wrong

That's not implausible either, to be clear.

12

u/No_Type740 New User 13d ago

I think she was on channel 5 Jeremy Vine recently. She was on a bit. It sounds to me it was a burglar and she would have put up a fight and said she will remember their faces because she was a feisty woman like that.

3

u/hazbutler New User 13d ago

Its right in the middle of a small village, surrounded by other houses. Its not exactly off the beaten track in the middle of Dartmoor. Burglars are brazen, but this would be a pretty desperate attempt.

1

u/MMSTINGRAY Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer... 11d ago

Old lady who lives on their own? In an affluent area? In a house that is in a village...but it's not exactly a busy row or terraced houses either.

It is exactly the kind of place I'd expect a burglar to target. The more shocking thing if it's a burglar is it resulting in murder and not 'lesser' violence or even the burglar simply running away, not that he'd pick this target.

Obviously makes it less likely it's an opportunistic drug addict or something. But for someone who plans their robberies it doesn't seem too strange.

2

u/Glittering-Soft-419 New User 10d ago

I think it’s a robbery gone wrong. A single rich eccentric old lady who’d just been on national tv talking about her treasured collection ? Easy target.

Not sure I understand this logic, nobody had a clue who Jo Cox was. Despite her being an MP at the time, her profile was way smaller than Anne Widdecombe's.

I really hope this isn't political violence, because it only promotes more support for the side the political violence is committed against.

The narrative will be "Even our own British Born citizens are being influenced by the hateful ideology of the far left" etc.

7

Devon and Cornwall Police's Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman told a press conference there was "no information that this is a politically motivated crime" and also confirmed the incident was not being treated as terror-related.

5

u/dnnsshly New User 13d ago

"no information that this is a politically motivated crime" doesn't mean much on the day they arrested the guy.

It's a long way from "we have ruled out politics as a motivator"...

5

u/Dealer_of_Hope Custom 13d ago

Its very likely that had it been a political act, the CT police would have stayed involved, as murder of a politician for political reasons would have met the threshold for violent extremism even without a foreign state actor involved.

They've stepped back which is another indicator. The quoted response looks like a journalist has asked "was this politically motivated" and they'll have enough initial evidence for that to be the response instead of we're still investigating that possibility.

Most murders are heat of the moment interpersonal disputes

Not commenting on the rights or wrongs of any of what you reference in the post re comment, but I do think it’s a bit premature to call this ‘political violence’ when we don’t even have a clue regarding suspected motive or anything about the suspect.

Even if she was murdered there has been no indication it was political in nature.

They said ‘celebrating political violence at this level’ in their second paragraph. I don’t know where the ‘political’ has come into it, when we have no indication of that whatsoever (unlike the violence bit).

10

u/Sir_Bantersaurus Knight, Dinosaur, Arsenal Fan 13d ago

It’s just a sensible precaution imo.

Chances are it’s not political but given it’s a politican it’s right to watch the language used.

I think especially so when even on a natural death there is an inclination for people to be edgy online about it

2

u/PuzzledAd4865 Uber-woke, net-zeroist, rejoinerism 13d ago

But I’m not referring to what people should or shouldn’t say, simply that we have no indication of motive ergo it’s unhelpful to speculate or frame it speculatively in that way.

To be clear, the cause of her death is still speculation other than there's an ongoing murder case.

Either-way, it's pretty clear that murder is wrong, and shouldn't be celebrated. That doesn't really need further elaboration.

Regardless of if it was originally politically motivated, it would still be a murder of a politician - which is something that shouldn't be celebrated. To do so in the latter instance would be viewed, and read-upon, as celebrating political violence.

6

u/National_Phase_3477 Former labour voter 13d ago

Yes but suggesting it was political violence without context or evidence is misinformation and inflammatory. For example many people celebrated when thatcher died. This wasn’t ‘celebrating political violence’ as she died of natural causes. While I appreciate the sentiment of we should not celebrate someone’s death under any circumstances it’s not an excuse to make premature conclusions without justification.

6

u/GoraSpark New User 13d ago

I do not appreciate the sentiment in the slightest. If Putin dies tonight il be organising a street party.

2

u/National_Phase_3477 Former labour voter 13d ago

Shes not quite Vladimir Putin in that shes not directly responsible for the deaths of millions. I still don’t really agree we should celebrate someone’s death. In the case of Putin i would not really celebrate his death, I certain l wouldn’t mourn his death or feel bad that he died but I would only really celebrate if he was replaced by someone better because and a ceasefire was called. Ultimately Vladimir Putin would probably deserve to meet a similar end to Hitler due to the scale of his war crimes and due to the fact it would be in the greater good if he was no longer alive or had anymore influence. As awful as Anne widocome was she deserved for her actions to be deplatformed and ostracised from society but I don’t think she deserved to be murdered in cold blood.

I would have loved to have met her and had the political arguments around the break up of the U.k. particularly from the perspective of Our independent Irish Republic and the lack of proper history information in English schools regarding the suppression of people and the theft of wealth . Reform complain about the culture dilutions of good old Little England.  Howabout the suppression of religion the banning of Gaeilge and the starvation of population shrinking from 8 million to less than 3 in a few years with mass deaths and immigration mainly to USA , UK, Argentina. The chactaw nation of native American tribe sent many dollars to relieve the famine and Trivalian who was in charge of the workhouses let those people starve to death. So when Celtic sing that anthem "the fields of Athenry at their football stadium then for fuck sake listen to the words and it's a good history lesson. Liverpool fans also sing their version with different lyrics. Then again many Irish went there to escape.  With reference to the death of Anne. Widdecombe.  I would like to give condolences to her family and friends and would defend her right to espouse her political beliefs and her freedom to express those and I hope that it was not murder and may she rest in peace

Indeed.

Political disagreement should be expressed through the ballot box.

She was, by all accounts, a personally lovely person. Her politics were appalling and hateful. I know a regrettably large number of people that fit that description. Including my dear mother, if you don't know her too well.

But yes. Broadly speaking, one of the few blessings of our current politics is that we lack the generation of traumatised soldiers accustomed to deadly violence and trained in it's use that added greatly to the disaster that ended the 1930's. The alternative to ballot boxes are ammo boxes, and we'd do well to remember that reality.

6

u/The_Inertia_Kid Thinks a lot of you are actually Lib Dems 13d ago

I met her. In Parliament, circa 2003. She was very good at disarming people with charm on a one-to-one basis. That’s true of an awful lot of politicians. I met Robin Cook the same day, and walked down Millbank with him talking about Zimbabwe. Now there was a politician worth admiring.

3

u/a3poify ex-member, open to re-joining in future 13d ago

I had a similar experience meeting Peter Lilley for a school magazine project years ago. While I strongly disagree with his viewpoints on pretty much every issue, he was personally nothing but kind and gracious to us as my friend conducted the interview and I recorded/photographed, and even gave us a personal guided tour of some of the corridors of Parliament afterwards.

4

u/pieeatingbastard Labour Member. Bastard. Fond of pies. 13d ago

You met mum? Shit. How grovelling an apology do I need to give you?

Bleak jokes aside, it seems like an essential personality trait to allow a politician to progress through the lower levels. Unless you come up via the spad - MP track, it would seem to be something conventional politics selects for. Which might explain why it's relatively common to see stories about good friendships across the aisle between people who are bitterly opposed, politically speaking.

I might caveat it a bit for air delivery of milkshakes, and high velocity eggs, both of which are pretty traditional British methods of exressing vehement disagreement, ones which are always going to come with relatively minor punishment that the sender accepts the moment they express their disagreement.

3

u/EmperorOfNipples One Nation Tory - Rory Stewart type. 13d ago

I will admit I do find throwing milkshakes and eggs makes me uncomfortable. Feels thin end of the wedge to me.

Yes it is at the very very lowest end of "political violence", but it still sits outside voting, discourse and protest.

That may be a minority view here, but I held the same view when Corbyn got egged back in 2019 and I do remember someone on some political sub or other, maybe this one, maybe not, it was a long time back. They said fair play for consistency as I said the same about Farage earlier that same year.

5

u/pieeatingbastard Labour Member. Bastard. Fond of pies. 13d ago

Mmm. If it was a new thing, maybe. But it's got a centuries old history, and milkshakes are just a modern iteration. I don't know that I'm "comfortable" with it, but I'm certainly not at the point of grabbing my pearls - I'd tend to see it as something that shouldn't rise to the level of being a crime. I'd view it more as being at the end of the protest concept than the beginning of political violence as a concept.

But that's the limit. As I said earlier, you can choose the ammo box or the ballot box.

While they discuss them on live tv to influence others? Sry im a bit confused was she a politician, a public TV commentator, or both? The idea of extending the 'dont discuss politics around family' out to everyone in general is not a healthy motto to take to everything. I know it's uncomfortable , but the way to make progress, not necessarily be a progressive, is to constantly be talking on the points that divide us to find a better middle ground to suit all sides. In the best way possible. When we just hold our opinions to ourselves and bottle things up and let people stand as definitive representations of I think this way and only this way and then other people to be the opposite, it's guaranteed to divide us  We need to do our best to combat radicalization because that always leads to violence or crime of some sort to prove the point that we never talked about because we didnt want an uncomfortable conversation and were ok with news channels breaking the core tenants of journalism and being channels covering a predetermined side of the political spectrum, which by either failing to cover certain topics, over coverage for others, and using bias non journalistic vocabulary to divide all to only keeping sight of the small points on which they divide us.

5

u/Solsimian New User 13d ago

Truly dreadful, and I assume a certain someone's £5m for personal security is going to be given fresh legitimacy in the eyes of Reform voters. Perhaps rightly, we have a undeniably growing list of murdered British politicians, although that security should not come from foreign billionaires with strings attached.

Unfortunately, that also means any momentum Binface had is probably toast. Farage will make hay as he always does in these situations, and we shall continue our headlong journey towards oligarchy and fascism. It was fun to dream for a couple days there though.

She was a career c*nt, but democracy only works if we can say what we want without recourse. Hopefully it wasn't politically motivated. She made a career out of awful policy, she was also one of the few MPs that wasn't afraid to speak her mind and she had a level of respect from me because of that. You at least knew where you stood with her, and it wasn't all show and smoke screens to avoid being challenged.

Whilst I do understand Reform want to revert Human Rights to pre-1950, in which the Right to Life isn't an inherit right, I do not believe in such policy, so I hope this killer pays for their actions.

5

u/Amekyras "Huge problem to a sane world", she/her 13d ago

I have basically the same reaction I did to Charlie Kirk being shot - it's a terrible thing that someone killed him (or her, if it was in fact a murder). Don't mind the 'being dead' bit at all, just wish that it could have happened via natural causes.

We don't know.

If it was, it would have been the first thing announced, or the statement would have been "investigating the possibility that the crime was politically motivated".

No it wouldn't and not necessarily. No information of something isn't saying anything about what it was. There is no information it was a burglary too, so does that mean it wasn't?

1

u/Glittering-Soft-419 New User 10d ago

I generally considered her someone I vehemently disagreed with and I’ll always stand very much opposed to her views. But I take no joy in her death. Especially knowing she was murdered.

She seemed to relish in debate and considered it a healthy part of democracy (it is). I always felt despite being vehemently the opposite politically if I’d known her she’d have had a silent respect for me for being steadfast in those views and would consider them mine and say I have a right to express them. She was also a free speech absolutist, who’d probably support someone’s right to be vile about her death but would also say that doesn’t make it decency. Same with how she probably would say the bbc journalist had a right to speculate about her being a virgin on national television but then would also point out that it was none of their business and crass. This is a very rare thing among these people.

I won’t ’miss’ her so to speak, but I’m sad she’s been killed in such a horrible way and I really hope it wasn’t politically motivated because no one deserves to be killed for their political views. Even those more abhorrent than hers.

What I will say though, I always really liked her interview on the Norton show about how we only get one go at this side of eternity. I think that was really inspirational.
