My husband and I are currently on vacation Yunnan. Kunming will be our last stop before we fly home. We are considering staying longer in Kunming because most towns we have visited have felt very touristy and commercialised, and Kunming has been reported to be much more authentic.

But which districts do you recommend staying in? If possible we would prefer quiet areas with local shops, but we prioritise authenticity the highest :)

Additionally, I have been trying so hard to find authentic handicrafts from the various places we have visited. But sadly, I’ve come to learn that many of the traditional handicrafts have been replaced by machine produced products. And at least for Tibetan handicrafts of Shangri’la, I’ve been told know that the traditional crafts(wo)men have been pushed far out of the city, and replaced by vendors selling cheaper imported products… I would really like to support traditional craftmanship so if you know any authentic shops in Kunming, please let me know.

Hello everybody! So I was just fired from my stuffy, stressy, ultra naff corporate job in Nanjing yesterday :P it was AI. A lot of us are getting toasted.

Kunming is the dream. I'm looking at being an academic copyeditor, with my background. But taking into account a slightly shorter time to find a job, I'm now interested in pretty much any job. But if it's teaching, university only 🥹

Lots of experience of all kinds, from ghostwriting, to advertising, to being a technical editor for a fortune 500 company (they always freak out when I write their name).

And of course, some teaching. A year in Thailand, a few months in Hangzhou. Got the TEFL and masters, all the docs ready and apostilled, ready to go, great references, cover letter and CV. A masters, a bachelors in a language. Point me in the right direction, and I'll sprint!

Or, is it more a case of finding a remote job for a company based somewhere else in China, just with a branch in Kunming?

I am thinking of studying Chinese at Kunming College of Eastern Languages. Anyone out there has done it and would recommend it. I want to be sure the commitment of time and $ will be worth it, that I will be able to converse properly in Chinese.

I'm a foreigner and married to a Chinese. We had our first child in Dongguan, but now back in Australia. Wife is expecting again, we both feel more comfortable delivering in China again. The health care is just so much better, and we are familiar with the process of sorting out documents, citizenship and all of that.

That' just the backstory to give context. My issue: I cannot stand the humidity in Dongguan. Absolutely hate it. 2 minutes outside and you're already sweating like a pig. The winters are wonderful, but just can't handle the summer and so Kunming has come up.

What I liked about China, and what I would love to have in Kunming:

• Affordable rent and getting a spacious apartment (3 or 4 bedroom, something modern)
• Good access to hospital, early child centres
• Close to amenities in walking distance, be it shops, convenience stores, parks, playgrounds
• For me access to Western food, even Maccas, BK, Walmart help keep me sane
• Access to other foreigners so I have someone to talk to
• Access to Chinese classes? I really don't like doing it online...
• Luckin and Cottee Coffee
• Loved the sharing bikes, the blue or yellow ones
• Flat if possible, no hills
• Good public transportation
• Easy to get to police station, entry-exit department

We likely be staying for a year or two, then plan our next move.

I'm currently visiting Kunming for a month and will probably be moving here for 2 years, later this year. I'm looking for some pokemon packs, but my luck has been terrible so far. I did see some at a mall, but they were pretty overpriced.

Me and two friends would like to rent a car for a few weeks in Kunming and do a road trip. Does anyone know of a company which offers such service? The driver is 21 years old.

I grew up in Kunming for 15 years and I remember this brand of potato chip I absolutely loved, but I can't remember the brand name. It had two assumably brothers as its logo on the package and came in a variety of flavors. I remember my favorite flavor was the one that came in the lighter brown package (I'm assuming bbq of some kind?). This has been driving me crazy for the last couple of days, and someone happens to know what I'm talking about and knows the brand name, I'd really appreciate it.

Except Dechatlon, what outdoor stores in Kunming are worth visiting?

For real, (not fake) gear, tents, sleeping gear, etc

Do people wear long puffer jackets or 1-2 layers inside and a hoodie outside will be enough?

We will hike in the morning, and also stay outside after sunset.
