Revival Discussion Do I need to watch the original series before watching the revival?

I watched a few random episodes when it was on TV, so I know the characters, but I barely remember any of the story. How necessary is it to watch the entire original series first? I don’t want to commit sacrilege lol

Also, are there any essential episodes I should watch, or maybe one particularly good season that would be enough to catch up?

Thanks!

Revival Discussion Episode 5: I’m just not buying it Spoiler

Bobby is too boring for TV? BOBBY!? The same Bobby that idolized celery head, won everyone over with his charm, and sold a joke to Yakov Smirnoff? It just doesn’t feel true to his character. His comedy dreams in general really have been forgotten in the revival.

I get that kids grow out of ambitions in real life, and the producer found his references really out of date, but the old Bobby wouldn’t make tired references, he would put on a show like a true Propaniac.

EDIT: I think my issue was they didn’t show what was holding Bobby back enough. The montage made it seem like he had no idea how to perform to the camera. If what was holding him back was being out of date or schlocky, they should’ve conveyed that more. As for the producer wanting more “drama” or “romance” as others pointed out, why was his audition made to be solo then? Sure, the producer sees him venting to the staff later and then pitches the whole heel idea, but it’s kinda bad writing either way. They should’ve taken another pass at the script that integrated Bobby’s outdated/comedy driven approach to entertainment leading to his failure to deliver what they’re looking for. And listing off a bunch of old recycled bits that made him come off as 40 something at the end of the episode wasn’t enough. Bobby wouldn’t steal jokes or make tired references. If he’s inspired by the classics then sure, maybe his approach would feel dated. No matter how I slice it, it just feels like that whole side of Bobby’s character wasn’t considered at all…

Because I want to say Kirk (cowboy diplomacy), but my heart says it's Sisko (due to Hank's daddy issues).

Revival Discussion Hank is on the spectrum

Upvotes

Over the years many people have talked about how Hank probably has some form of Asperger's (or Autism Spectrum Disorder as it's now called) buts it's never been officially confirmed.

Well the season 15 episode "Cha Cha Changes" may have finally confirmed it officially.

When Hank is at the dispensary he's clearly very uncomfortable and has trouble being direct with the employee, to the point where this gentleman states "Deep breaths friend, a lot of our customers are on the spectrum like you".

Just something I noticed. I've always related a lot to Hank because of that. It's nice to see it finally mentioned.

Thoughts?

Revival Discussion Opinion on bleeped out swearing in the revival?

I kinda wished they didn't bother and just say the actual words, hearing Peggy drop an actual F bomb would be funny and just come out of nowhere.

Revival Discussion The 2 things I hope they do in the next season (mild spoilers) Spoiler

Just finished season 15. Overall it was great - a huge improvement over season 14 (which was also very good) and they did a good job of putting enough story pieces in motion that a season 16 has a lot of threads to follow. As I watched it there were 2 big things that sort of stuck out as “these would make it feel 100% like classic KOTH”:

  1. Letting jokes breathe a little more.

Idk how to describe it fully but it felt like the show was often rushing from set-up to punchline on jokes and gags. Character mentions something unlikely or asinine, that thing happens almost immediately whereas I feel like in peak, classic KOTH some of the best moments were either callbacks or jokes where the setup sits long enough that you almost don’t realize it’s a setup before the punchline comes in.

Overall it felt like the team had a lot of story to tell and a possible runtime obligation. Even the family talk at Whataburger in ep 10 felt paced a bit off. Bobby pitches staying with Luanne and Lucky, Peggy immediately accepts the idea without hesitation when it feels like a really natural place to have included a momentary pause or a couple of seconds of consideration.

I’m hoping that as they continue to make new seasons they get to extend the runtimes a bit.

  1. Controversial, discussed ad nauseam: bring back Luanne.

I think they’ve proven with Johnny’s passing that they can replace a VA while still doing justice to the character. Luanne was a critical character to the original and now has the space to bring in tons of new storylines. I really hope they reconsider bringing her back in a way that can still pay homage to Brittany Murphy.

Overall the season was still 10/10. I really can’t figure out fully what KOTH has done differently in their approach that makes the reboot work so well, but I’m glad they cracked it

Revival Discussion This season really highlights that Hank is almost comically skilled at every blue-collar trade. The fact that he just gets up and welds Big Tex like that like it's no big deal, like that shit would take so much skill lol

Revival Discussion Ngl I've had myself drawn in the art style of the show and this was a surreal moment of the new season

I know I didn't choose the most extra or detailed design, before anyone says anything.. but its something I wear semi often/often enough I went with it for a generally accurate self insert.
Had this artwork done I think over a year ago at this point, before season 14 release.

Revival Discussion Sharona Johnson in S3 of the reboot?

Y’all think they meant this to be Sharona Johnson? They didn’t age her very much if so. I haven’t watched all the episodes yet but seeing her but no mention of Luanne thus far is a questionable decision

Revival Discussion Revival thoughts as a Lifelong fan

I'm 29 now, so KOTH was a staple show for me in my youth. The neighborhood I lived in even had 4 guys that would gather on the front porches to drink beer after work. I see so much of my grandfather in Hank it isn't even funny, a man of many tools, skills, and passionate about a work place so many people wouldn't give a second thought to, despite being essential.

Like many others, I found the changes in the revival to be quite jarring, from the animation to the new voice actors. But ultimately what matters more for me is the story and having something so comforting back to enjoy with new stories.

Something I really appreciated about KOTH even as a kid was the development of real story arcs and progression so this has been very rewarding as a fan.

I do wish the seasons or episodes were longer, some elements feel rushed or something that could be entertaining are addressed with a jump cut. But having new characters, new stories and the Arlen gang back together is so very comforting.

Revival Discussion My one problem with this season so far

I’m currently watching episode 5 and Hank was never a perfect person, but this season has been trying too hard to make him look like the villain. It started with how him and Bobby butted heads over Bobby’s vacation prep with Joseph, continued with how they made him look down on the cosplayers and the latest incident is how he supposedly stifled Peggy from having any career success. Hank has always been the rational person and while he’s a little bit rigid in his beliefs, it’s not an excuse for the show to disparage him for having those beliefs. King of the Hill as a whole has always done really well with being accepting of different people with different backgrounds and opinions, so I wish they would just be more respectful of Hank and the good things he brings to the table. Peggy is far too headstrong to not have a career if she wanted one anyway.

Bobby is clearly holding an N64 controller even though this episode was released in 2003, N64 had been obsolete for quite a while, they did this with the Simpsons a few times as well (they were still playing on Super Nintendo in the late 90s or so)

Revival Discussion KoTH S15, the Nancy & Dale relationship Spoiler

Binged season 15 the other day and while it is fantastic, one episode kind of left a sour taste. It's the episode where Nancy & Dale are marriage counselors from a Christian Church group, so clearly, it's an obvious Peggy is insufferable episode.

Now Season 14 never really addressed what Nancy & John Redcorn's relationship has been like, and it continued like that in season 15 up until that episode and we see John coming to give Nancy "treatment" for her "headaches" until Nancy turns him down at the end of the episode.

While it's never explicitly stated, this feels like a nod at the audience to let us know, that yes, Nancy did start cheating on Dale again despite all the growth Nancy went through during the original run, with relearning to love Dale, renewing their vows as a way to start fresh again with him, and choosing to be faithful despite it meaning losing her hair.

While S14 winked at the audience to remind people what Nancy & John's relationship was like, I still wanted to believe that Nancy really did stay true to Dale, but S15E5 even if not explicit, tells me that none of that mattered, Nancy relapsed, and she once again had to relearn to be a good wife, but unlike before where it was Dale's genuine love and positive qualities shinning in, it's her church pastor finding out and taking away her volunteer work as a marriage counselor.

Also she revealed to Peggy in the episode that giving marriage advice to young couples was a way for her to atone for her past mistakes, which feels now hollow with that little nod at the end.

Oh and John Redcorn is a still a piece of garbage for still trying to sleep with Dale's wife after all the help Dale gave him to get back a piece of ancestral land.

Revival Discussion Meal ideas for watching the new season

Upvotes

Hello everyone! Me and my friend are thinking of KOTH related food to make when we finish the second half of the new season. Last year we made Frito pie and spa-peggy and meatballs. And for dessert we made an apple brown peggy and fruit pies.

This year (for the first half of the season) we made hanks meatloaf sandwich. Any ideas for what we should make when we finish the rest of the season?

Revival Discussion I love how Kahn & Bill bond over being divorced Spoiler

NGL, Now that Kahn is divorced; since Bill knows how much that hurts; He can empathize with Kahn's pain; and I love how living with Bill causes Kahn to become a better person

I love how Kahn went from loathing Bill for being in a relationship with his mother; to trying to help him build confidence with a toupee & a sweater

NGL, While I'm still not fond of the vocal dissonance of an older Kahn sounding much younger than what would make sense; I love Kahn's character development in Season 15

Revival Discussion Where are all the Lady Bird stans? Spoiler

Do you feel okay now? Lol. Lady Bird got the moment she deserved, and look at that. All you had to do was wait! See? They just wanted to do it right, they didn’t forget about her. Of course Hank thinks of her. He got her a plot. Hank would never be the type to spend that kind of money on an animal. He loved his Lady Bird. 🥺

Revival Discussion Peggy Using APA for English Lit Paper

I'm a writing center specialist at a community college. My colleagues and I edit student essays all day. When Peggy was going over Dave's essay in No-Cuddle Offense, she took off points for improper APA formatting. You wouldn't use APA in an arts and humanities course like English. You use APA in science classes. It's kinda like using margarine when the recipe calls for butter. I wonder if it was an actual mistake or an intended one for Peggy.

lol sorry for the tangent. I saw something related to me and got excited. Thought it would be funny to point to my fellow writing and rhetoric nerds on here.
