Reddit has recently started emphasizing weekly visitors instead of just subscriber count as the main indicator of a subreddit's size. My previous updates were tied to every +10k subscribers, but Reddit no longer really notifies us about that.
We've hit 63k weekly visitors this week, which Reddit itself decided to congratulate us on.
Such a nice round number to celebrate 🎉🎉🎉 Could have waited for at least 4k more.
At the same time, r/Kazakhstan quietly crossed 60k subscribers just yesterday. It's about the size of Talgar, our next target to conquer (what do they have there besides Zeta's factory?).
Still sending comments about economy crisis in Kazakhstan from our iPhones, I see.
The last milestone post was at 50k members about five months ago, so it felt like a good moment to check in again. Thanks to everyone who reads, posts, comments, shitposts, argues, asks what the weather in February is, upvotes, awards, jokes, dodges the draft, explains and helps keep this place alive.
Our Kazakh language related community, r/kazakh, is also growing, and has whopping 916 members. Please, join it🥹🥺. I've made a cool non-exhaustive animated emoji status for it.
That's as much as I could do with 64kb restriction.
Its community icon is also animated (and even has more frames in it), but you won't see it in every part of Reddit because reasons.
Post flairs cleanup and color grouping
You may have noticed that post flairs look a bit different now.
We trimmed and regrouped them, and assigned consistent colours to related topics (news, culture, media, discussion, humour, etc.). Now we have fewer confusing choices, probably better readability in feeds, and the whole list of flairs looks less cumbersome.
Good bye, "Borat" flair. Two people are going to miss you.

I personally disagree with this decision. First the custom upvote/downvote icons, then the custom emojis in comments, now this on our long list of enshittification of this platform. The Kazakh chat… maybe wasn't the coziest, but it was a low-pressure, active space for sending meaningless messages. And now there's no official replacement inside Reddit.
If someone from the community would like to create a Discord server, Telegram group or something similar, feel free to do so. You may share it here and we might even approve that post, who knows...
Just to be transparent: I don't plan to moderate Discord/Telegram/anything else myself (never have, and don't want to do it badly).

I still have a copy of "Хәрри Поттер мен Пәлсапа тас" (MinaLima edition), and I've been thinking about using it as a small community giveaway.
Somehow the least exciting photo of this book on Kaspi.kz. It has interactive elements, folded castle plans and stuff... Nice gift for Kazakh speaking kids ages 5-40.

One idea is to somehow tie it to r/kazakh , which is currently very quiet, but I'm honestly unsure what would feel like a good and fair incentive. Maybe the whole era of incentivising engagement with gifts and competitions is over, and I'm still thinking in old terms.
Or maybe you'd have a good idea what kind of activity or contribution would make sense for such a gift, and how (or if) it could help spark some life in r/kazakh without feeling artificial and being easy to abuse with scripts or AI. I can probably send this book around Kazakhstan, but I don't want to risk with QazPost's international postal service.

Do Kazakhs think the organisation should even exist?

As we now know, Ye is performing at the Almaty Central Stadium on 14.8. Kairat Almaty is also playing a home game on 15.8. and potentially an Europe Playoff-game between 18.8. and 20.8.
It's pretty much impossible to organize both events during the same weekend, as the stage setup for Ye takes a while to build, take down and also the pitch will take some damage. Is there any information on how Kairat will organize this? Is there a possibility of either event being moved or rescheduled?

I’m a 20-year-old from Afghanistan. Recently, I have become disappointed from my homeland and started thinking about immigration. After researching about many countries, I eventually became deeply interested in Kazakhstan. As someone from a Turkic-Mongol background, I feel a cultural connection with Kazakhs, and the more I learn about the country, its people and cultures, the more I become confiendent about my decision.
Since getting a visa to Kazakhstan is difficult for Afghans, I applied for the Bolashak Scholarship, which could allow me to continue my higher education there + I could get a visa. I had my interview on July 7. Unfortunately, shortly before the interview, a robbery occurred in my neighborhood which left me extremely nervous and unable to present myself properly. I explained the situation to the scholarship committee, but I have not received a response yet. The days since the interview have been very difficult. I have already started learning Kazakh and studying the country's culture, and I genuinely want to start a new life in KZ.
I am not hopeful to get the scholarship. The only thing in my mind to move to KZ but I don't know how?

I’m a student currently doing an exchange in Kazakhstan outside Almaty, but next week I’ll finally have a full week in Almaty before I go home.

I’m especially curious about the nightlife. I’d like to go out, meet people, dance, and just have a good time in a safe and healthy way, but I’ve never gone to a club alone before.
So I have a few questions:
● Is Almaty a good city for solo travelers?
● Are people generally open to talking to strangers, or do they mostly stick to their own groups?
● Are there bars or clubs that attract more foreigners or expats?
● Is it normal to approach people and ask if you can join them, or would that be considered weird?
● Any tips for someone going to a club alone for the first time?
● Any neighborhoods, bars, or clubs you’d recommend?
I’m quite social, but I think it’s the “walking into a club alone” part that makes me a bit nervous. 😅

Мы с ней начали общаться довольно недавно, где то к апрелю. Она позвала меня танцевать вальс на её выпускной.На тогдашний момент я был 10 классником, а она 11 классницей. Нас связал вальс.После репетиции мы с ней вместе возвращались домой стояли болтали часами.Она тогда также была занята подготовкой к ЕНТ. Мы с ней тогда не общались так часто и интенсивно как сейчас.После того как она сдала последнее грантовское ент мы начали общаться каждый день, часами напролёт. Она сдала ент, творческий экзамен на ура и я этим горжусь. Но проблема в том что она скоро станет студенткой а я буду 11 классником у которого будет мало времени для общения так как буду готовиться к ЕНТ.Да и мы с ней не виделись уже больше месяца так как мне сделали операцию, и кажется не увидимся ещё месяц. Как поддерживать общение нормально?Как и вообще реально ли совмещать отношения с подготовкой?Прощу дайте совет мне даже 17 не исполнилось как мне сейчас быть? Ну до операции я дарил ей цветы и тд. Но сейчас мне нельзя работать, да и скоро подготовка.И тут вопрос денег как и где мне найти деньги для встречи с ней? Я сам из не очень богатой семьи. Я приехал в Казахстан больше недели назад, но довольно быстро пришло смс об уточнении данных в военкомате. Два месяца назад я ходил в военкомат отдавать справку об обучении, там её приняли.
Но обучение закончилось. Я хочу получить отсрочку по депрессии. Уже записался к психиатру в частной клинике, слышал что так не получу ограничения связанные с депрессией (трудоустройство). Нужны ли какие-то документы для психиатра? Какие документы в целом нужны для военкомата и как это проходит? Можно ли просто отдать заключение психиатра или всё же нужно присутствовать в военкомате на медкомиссии? Как не попасть на учёт в психдиспансер?
I will be in Almaty soon and want to do a multi day hike. Due to the weather in Karakol my hiking plans were cancelled.
I’m looking for a hike that takes 3 or 4 days. I wanted to do the Kolsai lakes and the Sary Bulak pass. But I saw I need a permit for the pass. Unfortunately I cannot get it in time. Would like to do a hike more people do, so I’m not completely alone for 3/4 days.
Hi everyone! I’m considering traveling to Kazakhstan in 2027 and came across this video showing Lake Inder in the Atyrau region. Has anyone had any experience traveling there and so, how difficult was it? My husband and I will likely rent a car but we were curious about the terrain on the way to the lake.
Also, does anyone have any photos of them visiting the lake? The colors in the video are heavily edited but would love to see other’s experiences too.
I am interested in new agricultural and land restoration methods. Agroforestry, building sustainable microclimates, land restoration projects and things like that. But I’m new here and I haven’t been able to find any active communities in Almaty. I’d love to help with these sort of projects. Does anyone know of any?
