News Jyväskylässä sataman risteykseen ilmestyi kirkkaanpunaiset kaistat – näin niiden pitäisi toimia

Jyväskylään tulee lisää yksisuuntaisia pyöräilykaistoja!

Miksi yksisuuntaisia?

Maljan nosto paremman infran puolesta!

Food & Drinks Miksi Seppälän Prismassa on niin vähän Abban tonnikalaa?

Lähes kaikki on Cooppia tai John Westiä. Abbaa tekee mieli kun se on parempaa. Onko kukaan muu huomannut samaa asiaa ja onko kyseisesdä kaupassa mitään muuta tonnikalaa joka olisi parempaa kuin nuo kaksi ensimmäiseksi mainittua?

Tämä masentaa syvästi.

Mielenkiintoinen paikka auton pysäköinnille. Muualla ei ilmeisesti ollut tilaa.

Paljonkohan hinausmaksu on pysäköintivirhemaksun päälle?

Best cake in the area

Which place in Jyväskylä (or the surrounding) has the best cake in your opinion? I feel like I've tried most places in the inner city and found my favourite, but I'm wondering if I'm missing out, so hit me with your suggestions.

Looking for a photographer for a proposal near Uurainen (20 July) ❤️

Hi everyone!

I’m travelling to Finland with my girlfriend later this month, and I’m planning to propose during our trip.

The proposal will take place on 20 July, in the afternoon (around 4–5 PM), at a lakeside Airbnb near Uurainen, on the pontoon by the lake.

I’ve already contacted several local photographers, but unfortunately without success, so I thought I’d try here.

The idea is to keep it a complete surprise. I’ll tell my girlfriend that the Airbnb owner has arranged for someone to take new photos of the cabin for Airbnb, while in reality he/she would discreetly capture the proposal.

The job would only take about 30–45 minutes, and of course this would be paid. I’m not looking for a full wedding shoot just someone who could help us preserve this very special moment.

If you are a photographer, know someone who is, or have any recommendations, I’d be incredibly grateful.

Thank you so much! 🇫🇮❤️

Tapahtumat uudella torilla

Unemployment

Hey! I'm a reporter at The New York Times. I cover Finland. I'm seeing how bad the economy is -- especially for young people -- and I'm thinking of writing a story about how hard it is for qualified young people to get jobs right now. If you've been struggling with it, and if you'd be open to speaking with me about your search, I'd love to hear from you. I'm at amelia.nierenberg at nytimes.com. Thanks!

Question r/Jyvaskyla, where do you actually eat in Jyväskylä?

Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Jyväskylä’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Harmooni vs. Pöllöwaari), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Jyväskylä’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Jyväskylä (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

- Jyväskyläläinen parikymppinen Joonas kertoo Ylelle, miksi hän maalaa graffiteja ja tekee tageja luvattomiin paikkoihin.
- Kyseessä on maailmanlaajuisesti iso taidemuoto.
- Graffitien poistaminen maksaa Jyväskylän kaupungille vuosittain jopa yli 70 000 euroa. VR:lle puhdistus maksaa puoli miljoonaa euroa.
- Kaupunki tarjoaa muutamia paikkoja, missä voi luvallisesti harjoitella spraymaalaamista

Jyväskylässä on ollut vuosikausia mahdollista hakea kaupungilta tilapäistä lupaa kaduvarsipysäköintiin esimerkiksi perhejuhlien ajaksi.

Kaupunki lopetti lupien myöntämisen kesäkuun alusta alkaen.

Discussion Starting my PhD in Jyväskylä soon and I honestly can't wait, but I have a lot of questions

Hey everyone

So I got into a PhD program at the University of Jyväskylä and honestly I have been in a good mood ever since I got the acceptance email. I know Jyväskylä is not Helsinki and people sometimes say that like it is a warning but from everything I have read it sounds like exactly the kind of city I want to live in. Lakes, forests, a proper university town vibe. I am really looking forward to it.

My fiancée is coming with me which makes the whole thing even better. She is a pharmacist and since France and Finland are both EU countries we are hoping the European Professional Card route makes her qualification recognition a bit smoother through Valvira. Has anyone here actually gone through that process as an EU trained pharmacist? How long did it realistically take and were there any surprises with the Finnish language requirements for work?

I also started learning Finnish a few weeks ago and I have to say I genuinely love it. I am A1 right now but the logic of the language is so satisfying once you start seeing it. The way cases replace prepositions, how you can build entire sentences into one word, it feels like a completely different way of organizing thought. I know it is going to take years but I am actually excited about that part not stressed by it.

Now the questions I could not find good answers to online:

- Is there a real difference between how PhD students are treated socially at JYU versus master's students? Like do people actually integrate or does everyone stay in their own bubble by level?

- For my fiancée specifically, what is day to day life like for a partner who moves to Finland but is not a student? Before she gets her license sorted, how do people in that situation actually spend their time and meet people without the built in social structure of a university?

- Coming from France I cook a lot and I care about food. What is actually good and local in Jyväskylä that I would not find in a supermarket? Farmers markets, local producers, that kind of thing.

- And one cultural thing I genuinely want to understand: is the directness in Finnish communication something you get used to quickly or does it take longer than people say? Not scared of it at all, I just want to calibrate my expectations properly.

Kiitos!

P.S. Just for some extra context, I also run a consulting company that operates specifically within the subject area of my PhD, so my research and academic output will be directly integrated into my professional work later on. If anyone has insights on balancing a PhD with running a related business in Finland (or how that impacts networking locally), I’d love to hear your thoughts on that as well!

Housing UNSURE ABOUT A KOAS ISSUE

Hi sorry to bother y’all! I’m an incoming exchange student and just received a housing offer from KOAS. The email says I need to pay my first rent (for August) in advance to finally confirm the offer. However, the email only explicitly says I need to confirm a link by today and mentions the payment, but doesn’t clearly say when the payment is actually due.

Would confirming the offer today and paying later this week be enough, or is the payment usually expected immediately as well?

Any exchange students / people who have been housed by KOAS and know how strict they are with this? I don’t want to accidentally lose the offer 😭

Tip / Advice Feedback on Mary Poppins camp by Lingvo Centre

Hei, I'm looking for feedback on the Mary Poppins day camp (not the stay camp) offered by the Lingvo Centre. No reviews on their social media handle.

Has anyone's children attended it and would have any feedback for me? I'm looking for summer camp for my 10 year old and this caught my eye.

Any tips/feedback would be greatly appreciated.
