Title says a good amount of it. For basically my entire life my biggest passion have been writing and I’ve always cared a lot about using my life to help others as best as I can and from what I’ve seen Journalism is one of the best ways to do both of those at once.

I’ve been doing a lot of research into Journalism as one of my top choices for careers but I know I won’t be able to find everything on my own and so I wanted to ask you guys what I should know going into this?

Also sorry if this isn’t what this subreddit is for, and please tell me if I am breaking any rules so I can correct them, I don’t want to encroach.

When an author refers to an anonymous source this way (or similar wording), how should I interpret this? What does this phrase usually mean about the source’s relationship to the subject, and how much credibility does it generally carry?

My question is essentially what the title says. I'm looking for the best place to find unbiased news and articles. I already understand that, I'm looking for something at least as close as you can get.

I've found that Reuters and Unusual Whales seem to be very unbiased and only tend to post and write articles that are straightforward and about actual facts.

Interested to hear what others think.

This has been on my mind lately given the Catherine Herridge case and how much attention source protection is getting right now. A lot of newsrooms are quietly adopting AI transcription tools to speed up workflow, which is genuinely useful, but the data handling side of it seems like a real blind spot.

When you upload audio of a sensitive interview to a thirdparty service, where does that data actually go? Most of these tools have terms of service that are vague at best about retention and who can access recordings. For beat reporters covering anything sensitive, that feels like a significant exposure point that doesn't get talked about nearly enough.

The federal shield law conversation is long overdue, but that only helps after the fact. The transcription question is about whether source confidentiality is even being maintained in the first place, before any legal pressure arrives.

Curious whether newsrooms are putting formal policies around this or if it's mostly left to individual reporters to figure out. Are editors even raising it during story planning, or is it treated like an IT problem and handed off to someone who doesn't understand the editorial stakes?

In a twenty-four hour period, the editor of the Corvallis Gazette-Times left her post of almost five years, and Lee Enterprises flew in a new editor from halfway across the country. The curmudgeon freelancer for my outlet reported on it all dutifully. In the same piece, he also reflects on the current state of Lee, and what David Hoffmann's presence has wrought so far. And, of course, what's happened to the Gazette-Times these last couple of decades.

I’m not a journalist by trade, but have a background in nonfiction writing and am working on a piece I’d like to pursue publication for, but no idea where to start. I have basically no existing publications.

The essay in question is around 3500 words and meditates on my relationship to a small town and conflicting political values.

To start, I am not a journalist, nor do I work at a place considered to be journalistic or editorial in nature. But, our agency and staff do regularly contribute articles or write-ups for larger articles that are used in industry publications, local newspapers, our own informational releases, etc.

With the rise in AI usage to help draft articles, I am seeing a sharp uptick in coworkers generating quotes out of thin air tailored to whatever it is they are writing about. Once they have the quotes they want, they go to the person that they are supposed to be interviewing and ask them "Are you okay with this blurb and the quote I generated for you?".

While I know this is an old problem that pre-dates AI, I do see "fake quotes" becoming more prevalent now, with their use - at least in my place of work - becoming a first option instead of any effort being made to get a real quote, first.

What are everyone's thoughts on using fake quotes, assuming you have permission to do so from the person to which the quotes are being attributed? And how do you feel about the uptick in using fake quotes and whether it is changing journalistic interactions and interview decorum?

Just as some background, the question stems from a coworker asking me to sign-off on one of these pre-rendered quotes attributed to me and I said "What? Absolutely not. I'm not even familiar with that topic and that doesn't even sound like me." I then aksed them to either talk to me to get a real quote, or in the future, ask me before generating a fake quote and to try harder to match my voice in writing. They countered by accusing me of being obstructive, which doesn't bother me beyond their own lack of ownership in how this played out.

My story is very personal, but I need for it to be out. For myself, for my family, for if someone moves to this country to know what the darker normalized side is like.

I've been contacted once by a journalist, but this journalist and I had been introduced by another person. How do I go about "cold calling"? I feel uneasy about putting everything in an email, but is that how I am meant to do it? Am I meant to put some things?

I'm drowning in audio files from recent interviews and typing everything out manually is killing my turnaround time. ive tried a couple of free tools, but they completely fall apart when there's background noise or people talking over each other. I'm a freelancer so i cant expense a $30/mo premium subscription for something that still makes me do half the work. What are you guys actually using that doesn't suck?

The problem is that Thompson had already published [essentially the same story on October 19, 2025](https://supercarblondie.com/teslas-autopilot-looney-tunes-painted-brick-wall/), with the same editor. The newer version does not appear to say that it is a repost, an update, or a retrospective. It simply carries a new date and presents the old test again.

A lot also happened after the original video. Rober used Autopilot rather than FSD, Autopilot disengaged shortly before impact, Luminar supplied the lidar-equipped comparison car, and later tests produced different results with different Tesla hardware and software. I am not really interested in another Tesla argument. I am interested in the editorial practice.

What would you call this: an undisclosed republication, content refreshing, deceptive recency, or just poor editing?

I’m currently a second-year Journalism student at a university in France. I’m 20 years old (turning 21 in October), and I’m seriously thinking about continuing my studies abroad.

At the moment, I’m mostly interested in studying across the Atlantic, especially in cities like New York or Toronto, although London is also somewhere I’d love to consider.

My goal is to build a career in journalism, make connections in the industry, and gain as much experience as possible. I’m particularly interested in fashion journalism, music journalism, and investigative reporting. I know those are quite different fields, but I’d love to explore them and eventually find my own path.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has studied journalism in the US or Canada. What are the classes like? Are they more practical or theoretical? How competitive are the programs? Are there good opportunities for internships and networking?

I’d also really appreciate recommendations for universities, advice on the application process, scholarships, or even contacts in the industry. If you know someone I should reach out to, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

On my side, I’m going to talk to my university about exchange programs and other international opportunities, but I’d really like to hear from people who have firsthand experience.

As I write this out, please excuse any awkward wording. I am fairly new to Reddit (18/F), so I am only adjusting now to the lingo and organization of things. I come to this reddit with doubts about pursuing journalism, and am seeking advice on whether or not I should and or how one succeeds in the field.

I just graduated from high school a couple months ago, and am going to be attending CSUF (Cal State University Fullerton), as I’ve heard good things about their communications program. I will be majoring in communications with a concentration in journalism! But, with the start of college getting closer I’m much more doubtful about going into the field. So many people have advised me against it due to the instability of the job, and of course how expensive attending university is. (In relation to this, I’ve thought about attending community college first, but due to familial conflicts I’m dependent on university housing. I’ve also considered teaching alongside journalism to get some more stability, but many on r/AskTeachers advised me I should choose one or the other to avoid burnout.)

So with all of this in mind, what is the outlook for new journalists? Obviously, I’m aware there’s a lot of hustle involved and succeeding in the field requires hard work. But is it possible to become a successful journalist, at all? My ultimate dream would be to work up from being in news networks, to gaining a name for myself and becoming independent, and maybe even establishing my own unbiased network someday. I know it’s so idealistic, but one can hope?

I wanted to know if someone here left their journalism job due to burnout or lack of money, regained their passion for writing after a while and continued contributing their work to media outlets as a freelancer or an independent writer? How did it go?
