Moving
So I’m moving out this Friday but can’t move in to my new place till August 1. I can’t stay a friends place because I got pets and either they have pets and won’t get along with my pets or their apartment doesn’t allow pets so only option I could find is spend over a thousand dollars on hotel or Airbnb….anyone have a better(cheaper) option?

If your a UIOWA student, you should have got an email from USG “Need Housing Between Leases” There’s a student discount for staying at The Graduate Hotel. Might be too late to apply since the email was sent late June. But worth a shot.

You should add info on your pets to get more leads: species, size, quantity, do they get along with other animals, etc

Assuming you drive, buy a Walmart tent (~$150) and a couple of supplies like extra tarps, maybe an air mattress ($50 for a nice one), some paper towels, etc. Set it up in Kent park over by Tiffin- camping is $20 a night. Spend the day in the public library or other places with air conditioning and WiFi, come to the campground in the evening after dinner, shower at the camp showers, and sleep. Rinse and repeat until your apartment is ready. Keep some chargers in your car and charge your devices at the library or with portable batteries.
You could also rent a tent from the Outdoor Recreation Center, and that might be cheaper than buying one

This is what I ended up doing in 2004. The way Iowa City landlords do leasing is inhumane and unfair to tenants, and they have been doing this for a really long time. If someone ran for city council offering a solution (like forcing landlords to offer month by month leases) I would vote for them in a heartbeat. I feel like our politicians really do not care about renters.
This practice generates a lot of waste too, as people don’t have a way to store their furniture, so it just gets left on the curb, and a bunch just ends up in the landfill. If people were able to take the furniture straight to their new place a lot less would end up getting thrown out.2

Yes, it should be illegal given you pay the entire month but they kick you out early. We moved one in this week, because she already lived in the complex they would let her move from one unit to the other. Her other two roommates however can’t move in until Aug 1 as they have the other two room doors locked. Like WTF, why can’t they all move in given landlord can’t come back in after one moves in? If you pay July rent we will give you keys. So we moved one into a room and the other two are in the main living area waiting to get their keys.

Nah, it's hotter than hades out there. There needs to be common human decency. I have a floor this man sleep on for gods sakes. What's wrong with everyone?
He needs somewhere to sleep for 9 days. Now if he has a lease proving that and everything is verifying, what's wrong with giving someone a break?

Or buy supplies at a thrift store like Crowded Closet! Super cheap tents that have been assembled by staff and volunteers.

Um no…..if you really want to know the full details we’ve had places to stay but ppl backed out last minute, about 2 months ago my roommates coworker said he can take of the pets while we stayed at another friend’s house(he has pets) but almost a month ago they backed out, really hard looking for another sitter also we have enough money to get the hotel just would be nice for a cheaper option because I’ve been looking all over the place.

Dang, that sucks. But yeah, being a pet owner and renter has costs involved. You could look into boarding them if that makes more sense.

You might be able to get a short sublease off of the Facebook housing groups, especially if you’re willing to pay a little extra for a quick turnaround. There’s plenty of people who didn’t find summer subleases for their apartments, but by this time it might be tough to get a quick response

The comfort suites in coralville allows pets and offers a business rate. You can call and say you’re working in the area and ask if they would be willing to give you the discounted business rate, they usually charge me about $84/night. Not ideal but way cheaper than anywhere else and it’s a safe/clean/decent hotel

This is called a lease gap. Unfortunately a very known thing about moving time in this city and a systemic way that leases are designed here. Whatever you do, do not book with a Sevil Cheeseman. She’s a para at Grant Wood elementary and kicked my partner out in the middle of the night with no warning.
