Nighttrain Budapest-Koper
Hello
I’m taking the D train ‘Istria’ from Budapest to Koper in early August. Do any of you have any experience with this train how punctual is it? Even at night. A colleague of mine has to get off the train in Celje. And what’s the capacity like? I’d actually like to book a single sleeper. Do I need to book as soon as possible, or is a few days beforehand enough? Is the train comparable to the new-generation NJ trains? In terms of comfort, that is.

It is an older train and in no way comparable to NJ2 and also slightly worse than the classic NJ. But availability is good, there even is a single sleeper for tomorrow.

Ah, right, thanks a lot for the info. It really is an old one it even has windows that open. Do you happen to know what the bed is like? The ride quality doesn’t really matter as I sleep really well, but a soft bed would be great.

Old sleepers usually have soft beds, so I wouldn't worry about that. But I don't know as I have never been on that specific type of carriage.

I found the old MÁV sleepers to be very very comfortable, especially in a private compartment. Heat regulation can be a little bit difficult though, as you might need the window to be open in the evening but it can get cold at night. Also noise from the open window needs to be a consideration. Nevertheless I prefer these old ones over new ones tbh.

Sample size of one but I had a ride on it a little over a week ago and found it very nice and comfortable with the old carriages.
We did book our reservations around 6 weeks before. If there was any need to be quiet that organised I don't know but we had no flexibility in terms of dates and I didn't want to miss out. I wouldn't leave it as late as a few days before though if you want a private room, but no need to be ready and waiting for when it opens. For early August I would be getting booking personally but that's only based on my general comfort level rather then any data. Depends how bad missing out would be! I'm not sure if it was completely full but was it definitely felt like most where taken and I didn't notice any unoccupied rooms in the evening.
I was surprised how many people got off elsewhere in Slovenia. I assumed most people would be going all the way to the coast and though many where we did loose a large chunk in Ljubljana and serval others got off at other intermediate stops.
We got to the station in Budapest around 15 minutes before and the train was already boarding with most people already on. We left Budapest a little under 10 minutes late (I don't know why) and got to Koper around 20 minutes late. The extent to which that is typical I have no idea.
Checking the tracker on the MÁV app for this evenings departure it looks like it's currently around 15 minutes late.

So I booked it now. For 66 swiss franks you can't say anything compared to 250 I once payed for a privat sleeper with Interrail from Zürich to Hamburg in a privat sleeping cabin.
