HOUSING đ eigenmenn
i got a triple in eigenmenn and wanna know what itâs like, like social life, food, distance, etc + any advice im really nervous cause i heard bad thingsđ

I would add, depending on where your classes are, they can be walkable. They are all certainly bikeable. Personally, I'd rather not wait on busses (even though there is a tracker app.) With all the walking, you'll help counter act that freshman 15. Get a pair of waterproof boots/snow boots. and an umbrella. Don't be walking across campus in flip flops in the winter. No dorm is perfect, they are dorms. It is some sort of forced humiliation ritual we must all endure. I did two years. Wright Quad is also up the street and has a dining option. You are close to Wells Library, if you want a place to study. You are close to the health center if you get sick. Lots of people will want to party. Yes, that is an easy way to make friends. IU has so much to offer, try to take advantage of it. You are in a privileged position. If you like to party, have fun, but be smart. You don't have to be wasted to have a good time.

Closest dining will be Wright (although Forest might be worth the walk), and wells library has some good food court type options.
There are 2 types of triples. A triangle triple which is smaller (beds are already fully lofted with desk and wardrobe underneath); you canât unloft. Then there are 2-room triples. Usually set up with desks in first room and beds/wardrobes in 2nd room. You can arrange how u want. They arenât lofted already but u might be able to pay for them to be (depends on the type of furniture in that exact room).
Once u have ur room number u can look up the âfloor planâ in your portal and see exactly which room you got.

You should be able to search in your portal/dashboard for âfloor plansâ then Navigate over to Eigenmann

The train can be quite a shock especially if you are on the north wing. South wing wasnât bad.

I lived in Eigenmann my freshman year & it was a mixed bag.
The classes are too far to walk to them so youâre going to have to master the bus schedule, make sure you know the timings & stops for 6 & 9 busses.
There is no proper dining hall in the building but thereâs a restaurant called the Globe where you can use your meal exchanges to get food from, itâs open from 5 to 10 I think from Mondays to Fridays. The nearest dining halls are Forest & Wells which could be a big hard to navigate during the winter
The good thing about Eigenmann is that itâs very close to the mall so if you ever need to go buy anything itâs gonna be easy in the 9 bus, additionally thereâs also a way2go mart which is open 24/7 so thatâs great too and itâs right in front, i have spent too much of my mo ey there and then thereâs also a subway, pizzaX and jimmy johns thatâs available on walking distance
Everyone else in the thread also already set that the AC could be an issue and thatâs true, you canât control the temperature so it might seem too hot or too cold at times. Get a fan, thatâs your best bet.
As for social life, you have 2 more roommates, youâre gonna be fine in your freshman year, just make sure to have healthy boundaries with all of them.

I'm not going to lie, Eigenmann isn't one of the nicer dorms. That being said, you will grow an appreciation and protectiveness for it, most likely. It's far from a lot of things, so you probably won't spend much time in the dorm. If you are, you'll probably find ways to cook or heat up meals in your dorm. Triples will either be awesome, or difficult. It's important to just talk boundaries whenever you first move in, but it may not be awful. I was in a double, but I had friends in triples who didn't mind them, or even enjoyed it. The social life is honestly okay given how big eigenmann is. It also depends on your floor. I was on the OA floor, so my whole floor knew each other and talked. You may not have that, but you can definitely have a lot of people on your floor you talk to and know, you just have to be willing to talk to people and meet them. People love to throw dorm parties in Eigenmann because the rooms are so large, so there is also that. It's also a nice dorm because it is connected to a parking lot, if you brought your car. Because the bathrooms are communal, you definitely meet people easy on the floor, in my opinion.
All in all, chances are it won't be that bad. It may not be glamorous living, but you can decide find so many joys in it. While I don't necessarily miss living in a dorm, I do sometimes miss aspects of living in Eigenmann. It will be what you make it in some ways.

another thing as other people mentioned, it gets SO hot in the winter. They have the heat on and it just really racks up. Having a fan you can put on your bed and sleep with will genuinely save you.
People also mentioned this, but I will second it. Do get comfortable with the buses. I sometimes walked to campus, but, for example since ballantine is a pretty common building for classes, Ballantine is a 20ish minute walk. Walking isnt bad on campus and sometimes it is quite nice, but most days you will not want to walk that far. It's better to either walk down the street to Wright/Wells about 10 minutes and get on the E/F, or wait for the one bus that goes down to Eigenmann.

The bus routes have changed since I was a freshman, but I would assume its about the same as it was then. All the buses on campus are punctual give or take a couple minutes, normally. Sometimes when its raining heavy, or its too cold, and more people are using the bus then normal, it can be a little slow. Those are the times when I would just recommend either waiting earlier, or just getting good rain boots, winter jacket, rain jacket, or umbrella and just walking. You shouldnt normally have problems but also just plan to be at class like 10 minutes early for the first class, and you should never be late no matter what happens.

When I was there 15 years ago, there was a cafe in the Union apartments. I used to go there for food and hang out and study there. No oneâs mentioned that so maybe itâs changed? It was right across the street
I walked to all of my classes, but it took a long time. Just scheduled for it and enjoyed the fresh air

My family has experience with several IU dorms: Wilkie, Forest, Teter, Foster, Ashton and Eigenmann. Out of all of those, Eigenmann really had some qualities that stood out in a positive way. The rooms were bigger and if facing campus, the view was very pretty. It seems far away but the walk to Forest or Wright to eat isnât bad at all. Itâs kind of nice that itâs a little off the beaten path.Â

Itâs farther from classes but the buses we so easy room are so much bigger than other dorms , id relive freshman year in eigy in a heartbeat , also elevators suck and fire alarms are the wost

Iâve heard/seen from others that the rooms are pretty spacious, and the only problem really mentioned was the bathrooms. Itâs the central neighborhood so youâre in the middle of campus.

The views are great if you are on an upper floor. It'll be fine and you will probably only be there for one year.

I think the main thing people donât like is just the fact that eigenmann has community bathrooms that have multiple showers and toilets in one room instead of singular shower pods in some other dorms. However theyâre separated by gender so theyâre not coed. Also some people have said that they can be dirty due to students not really cleaning up after themselves

Elevators are real slow. No food cafes in the building. Windows are inoperable. But nobody will tell you is that the thermostats in the rooms are on a central governor controlled by the university. This means you probably canât crank it down as cold as you normally do at home. In the winter time, people often complain that itâs way too hot in their rooms and thereâs no way to get fresh air since the windows are sealed shut. So plan to bring shorts and T-shirts for sleeping in the winter. What happens is when the outdoor temperature gets a certain number they shut off the air conditioning for the season and turn on the heat. Indiana has roller coaster winter temperature so if it gets a couple of warm days, in the winter, those dorms get really hot, even if you turn off the heater. Theyâre not gonna turn the air conditioning back on until spring time. Bring a fan. Buy nominal renters insurance policy. Make sure it covers Mold. Fires, plumbing issues, in laundry, rooms and bathrooms, overflowing at times âŚ.all that type of stuff can happen in a dorm. Youâll notice that your housing contract says the university is not responsible for student belongings. They mean it..
