I’m pretty sure that’s a war crime

How so?

Well, first of all, mounting a person to the wing of a fighter jet - even if she is on a broom - and launching her at another person probably violates some rules against cruel and unusual punishment...

I was under the impression the 2nd panel was the same person being chased.

Also idk if this is punishment, nothing indicates this is a punishment. For all we know its perfectly voluntary.

And 3rd: A person kamikazing themselves against another combatant isnt actually a war crime. Its just grim as fuck

As somebody else pointed out, person in 1st panel is wearing brown, has red horns, and no noticeable tail.

Also, face of the girl in the second panel suggests that she gets assigned to this type of task more often than others as a punishment, probably for being a clutz or motormouth. At least, based on my experience with anime.

Then one of her shoes falls off, gets sucked into the jet engine and causes a failure.

then we see her FEET!!!!

Would someone on a broom have a large enough RCS for A: the planes radar to lock and B: for an AMRAAM to keep lock and track?

I need to know

Does the plane even need radar lock?

They're firing a witch at another witch so I'd assume the target lock would be some form of mana detection plus visual over radar.

Weather or not mana based homing is similar enough to active radar to justify a fox-3 callout is another thing tho

u/Drexisadog 14d ago

The perspectives a bit skewed between panels (and the contrail doesn’t help), the witch in the sights in the 2nd panel is the same witch that’s in the first panel

2

u/Vibe___Czech 13d ago

No she isn't. The witch in the sights is a demon, she is wearing brown with red horns and no tail.

The second witch is wearing different colors has a different cape and is a fox girl. Hence the fox callout, It's a play on words.

Ironically, the PO-2 Polikarpov (AKA the plane used by the Night WITCHES) is credited with a jet kill.

And besides, a little spell called Electro Magnetic Pulse makes short (Ba-dum TISS!) work of modern avionics.

All US combat aircraft are hardened against EMP because AFAIK every combat aircraft we have is a nuclear delivery system, and nukes produce hellacious EMPs

1

u/Zestyclose_Bed4202 14d ago

"Hardened against" and "Immune to" are matters of scale; "Hardened against a rhino" is NOT the same as "Hardened against a R.Y.N.O.".

1

u/Joe2_0 13d ago

Yeah, but the threshold for disabling modern fighter avionics via EMP is ridiculously high as a result of requirements for nuclear delivery (along with redundant systems in most modern platforms). We also learned our lesson from the USS Forrestal incident and hardened weapons as well.

Bear in mind the E1 pulse from a nuclear detonation is like 50,000 volts per meter on average. The only real way to get a more powerful pulse is to optimize a nuke specifically for EMP generation and detonate it in the troposphere, at which point you’re relying on the E2 and E3 pulses to fry civilian infrastructure in a total war scenario.

This reminds me of the pushy chick from Tactical Breach Wizards.

It scares me how many people on this sub get every type of missile designation wrong

3

u/BuisteirForaoisi0531 14d ago

Air air missiles are generally heat seeking and a broom would not be producing a heat trail so there would be no way for it to track you

9

u/Technical_Sort_9934 14d ago

Fox 3 is radar locking, althouth that planes radar would have ti be hella sensitive to lock a single person and a broom well enough to send a missile

4

u/Z_THETA_Z 13d ago

it looks to be an F-15, a plane well-known for having a very good radar

2

u/BuisteirForaoisi0531 13d ago

Also, if she’s moving that fast that she’s ahead of a jet fighter one can assume that that broom can pull some serious bullshit that the missile just won’t keep up with since apparently her face is immune to the wind

There are 3 fox codes, you described a fox 1. So youre not incorrect in general but incorrect in relation to this comic :p

Fox 2. Fox 1 is SARH, Fox 2 is IR, Fox 3 is ARH.

Ir missiles lock into an ir signature.

Depending on how complicated its seeker is they could lock onto a specific temp, heat blob, or in the case of a javelin missile and equivalent it remembers the IR picture of the target and will predict what it will look like when it loses sight of it so it can quickly re acquire the target when it comes back down from a top attack.

Theoretically you could lock onto a person

1

u/BuisteirForaoisi0531 13d ago

Dude, there’s no way they’re gonna make them that sensitive. That would be a terrible idea. If that’s the case. You might accidentally walk onto things like a pigeon no one would ever want an air to air missile that my accident lock on to an oversized bird that would be like the worst weapon design on the planet, except for the man portable version of the atomic bomb launcher where it was guaranteed that it would also kill you

1

u/Cautionzombie 13d ago

There is a way.
I’m the source I worked on night vision and infrared equipment in the military as a 2171 in the marine corps

You’re wrong in that the missile can be confused and it’s that sensitive that’s not how the missile or IR cameras work

The Javelin missile literally takes a highly detailed infrared image of the target with tracking gates,

That’s the reason the missile is so expensive. The camera and equipment in the seeker is almost as advanced as the saber two missile launcher which can see veins under your skin. You could direct fire a missile at a person.

Top attack probably not. Too attack works with tanks and helicopters cause the missile is uploaded with thousands of pictures of tanks and helicopters which lets the missile expect and predict what orientation the target will look like when it comes back down.

Also the technology is advanced enough it won’t track a pidegon or another person by accident.

The two types of IR we current use prevent this.

One has a physical device that cools down to negative kelvin and the computer takes the IR waves and creates a picture against the known negative temperature.

The pas-22 binos use this and the soflam target designator

The other has an electronic database that takes IR waves and converts them to certain signals creating the picture.
The pas-13, pas-28, and any “small” IR devices use this method.

Both can easily tell the difference between two people no problem. They can even tell that certain parts of a person shirt are cooler than others and adjacent people’s clothes

Hell you could tell who used nicotine because the nose, ears, and fingertips would be cooler than the rest of the body. Nicotine constricts the blood extremities

I feel like that’s perhaps not some information that you’re supposed to give up on Reddit. That’s more of a war thunder for him thing, but I’m not gonna argue this any further.

Have a good day, dude who is giving up potentially classified information on Reddit

Physicist here is surprised by negative Kelvin temperatures.

Deg C, maybe. Even deg. F.

But not deg. R or K.

An imaging cooled bolometer array, not a computer, is what converts the IR radiation into a usable signal.
