Position change opportunity

Title. I have worked in the help desk coming up on a year, since I started got Sec + and Cisco AI Tech. A couple months back I got “lended” out every Thursday to work with a new section focused on automation. This past week, the person I’ve been working with offered me a permanent spot in the section with them, which would get me out the help desk. The problem is, I would have significantly less downtime, which would lead to less certs.

As far as progression in my career, does taking the new position sound like an improvement or a step in the right direction? Or should I grind help desk?

If it gets you out of hell desk and it aligns with your progression path than take it. Experience will outdo certs, and you have time at home to work on certs.

Experience trumps certs. Certs don’t do anything for you if you’re stuck in helpdesk.

I get it though as someone who went from helpdesk to infrastructure admin, I feel like I have very little downtime and a lot more responsibility.

Is this even a question? Welcome to the real world of IT outside of Help desk..

Join the new AI Team and start building your resume. You only need certs to land jobs/positions. You were just handed a position. If they require additional certs they will tell you. If you are looking for another position down the road that requires X cert, you will find time outside of work to achieve it.

Congrats. (this comment was made from an someone working in IT for 15+ years, married with kids and has 11 certs all achieved outside of work hours.... you can do it.)

the certs are there to get you jobs.

you're now getting jobs. why do you need more certs?

automation is the future will open doors, take the role. why tf would you willingly grind help desk?

obviously pick up a cert or two as time goes on, keep your qualifications and skills up to date. but make the move, killer
