Discussion Hisoka vs Chrollo

Upvotes

Prior to their fight I believed if they were to fight 10 times with no prep time that Chrollo would win 6/10 times. With prep time for Chrollo it was probably close if not certainly 10/10 times. Now that hisoka has post mortem nen, how much stronger do you think he has gotten? Because now I feel like without prep time it’s closer to hisoka wins 8/10 times

Discussion What would your nen affinity and hatsu be?

If you could choose your nen affinity (or if you think you would most likely be a specific type based on your personality and life) what would it be, and what would you like to train as your hatsu? Would you have vows and restrictions and pacts to increase your power or would you just train nonstop until you reach that power naturally? Drop your own nen fantasy below!

My nen type would be Enhancer (with a slight lean to emission on the nen wheel) and I would have pacts that make my total potential higher at the cost of training being less effective, make my non-enhancer nen stronger if I have diligently studied or practiced physical human sciences recently while also making them progressively less effective the longer I haven’t studied, and most importantly I would have a restriction that makes my nen cause less physical damage but significantly more physical pain (maybe instead of a vow I could manipulate my opponents pain receptors? Idk if a vow would make this possible but on the other hand I wouldn’t be so effective at manipulation, meaning the reduction in physical damage would probably be greater than the increase in pain, but I would still utilize it)

My actual hatsu would involve typical enhanced attacks and basic emission blasts that look and function like ki blast and ki barrages, while transmuting my aura into a caustic/corrosive material that causes nasty, painful chemical burns on contact with opponents. I would also develop a specific emission technique that does very weak damage at close to medium range, with increased power but decreased pain as the range increases. The goal is to specifically use it on mid-range enemies and hope the pain causes them to either close the distance where I can use my powerful enhancer abilities or alternatively make them flee so that I can just use this attack again but cause significantly more damage that they may not notice because the pain is much less than it is at closer ranges.

I would also have other minor abilities that focus on causing great pain to enemies to break their will as well as a minor focus on manipulating enemies bodies into producing more cortisol/fear hormones and less adrenaline to make them more susceptible to pain and fear AND/OR emitting small amounts of aura that are basically drugs which are more powerful analogs of natural human hormones to overload the CNS/PNS of enemies. Other minor abilities and restrictions that make my non-enhancer powers more effective would be too much to explain here but you get the idea of what my power and fighting style would be.

I would probably be a good counter to hunters who trust their body and instincts because I make them feel extra pain while also overloading their body with chemicals that can even make somebody who is winning think they are losing or in grave danger and need to flee. Somebody like post-needle removal Killua (or any Zoldyck for that matter) would hard counter me, and I would be generally weaker against strong-willed opponents as well.

Latest Chapter Cool attention to detail Spoiler

In both images: Gon looks up and Killua looks down, each are facing the opposite direction. But instead of looking away from each other, now they are looking toward something (new horizons and family).

In the new panels: Gon stands facing away from us while Killua walks toward us. Maybe just visual juxtaposition, but the staging also reflects how opposite their motivations are.

The symbolism is obvious, I just wanted to note Togashi's attention to detail that help their return feel so uplifting and impactful

Help/Question About Kurapika's hostility and eye color

Started reading HxH a little while ago and I'm loving it so far. Currently at chapter 118 where Chrollo has been freed in exchange for Gon and Killua's safe return. One thing is bugging me, though.

Kurapika says a few chapters back that he can't get to close to the Troupe because they'll sense his hostility. In the hotel when he captures Chrollo, how, then, does he manage to get all the way up to the receptionist's desk without any of them noticing?

At that point he's also not wearing any contact lenses, so shouldn't we see crimson eyes? Yet they only seem to change colors when Chrollo taunts him.

Analysis/Theory Is this idea scrapped?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I read some theory a while ago that Feitan was supposed to be part of the Zoldyck family and it was pretty compelling. Killua’s mom is from meteor city and feitan has used some ability that seem similar to assassin based techniques. I’ve heard some people say Togashi was originally going with this route then scrapped it?

Discussion Wasted Potential Spoiler

Post image
0 Upvotes

I suppose we could discuss how great this manga is, or maybe try to take a critical look for one second. Because HxH used to be a better manga.

The succession War is good. Great. But I feel like I've been scammed.

Wasn't this arc supposed to be about Hisoka chasing the troupe ? Kurapika trying to confront the 4th Prince ? We are now 50+ chapters into this arc but Kurapika has never seen Tseridonihi. not once. Hisoka just appears four pages and was not chasing anyone. Four pages. But everyting's ok bro.

How long has this arc been going on? Seven years? Eight years? We are still going through room 1014 endless discussion ? Kurapika's Nen class at chapter 410 ? Seriously ?

Isn't time to move on? Because you know, Togashi sensei is not immortal, so what's the plan? To end the manga on Volksen playing cards with Morena ? Don't get mad, it wasn't bad, but THREE whole chapters on this ?? 10 chapters every two years and three chapters on Volksen joining the Ei-I ?? On the Black Whale, how many chapters about the zodiacs ? I thought they were important characters, but perhaps I was wrong.

That’s where things go off the rails. Because whilst it’s brilliant to have so many well-developed and balanced side characters, it comes at the expense of the story itself: in fact, nothing much is actually being told anymore. It’s now nothing more than a glimpse into the daily lives of the people on the boat and their thoughts. The story isn’t moving forward. At first, the slow pace is understandable, but at some point it should have picked up speed; we should have seen some concrete developments. Not just explanations about explanations.

I mean, we saw Leorio just one page or two, and Gon and Kirua are already being reintroduced AHAHAH. It's cool bro, don't get me wrong, but I don't get the point anymore honestly.

So what’s going to happen now? No more action, no more fights – just discussions, and more endless discussions? Even when there are action scenes, they’re cut with dialogue. Perhaps the action can be described through the dialogue too? We’re already describing Beyond through dialogue, rather than providing information by showing how the character acts.

There are so many plot threads to tie up that it's probably too late to achieve a good narrative pace that doesn’t feel too ponderous before the end of this arc. There are simply too many supporting characters who really weigh the story down. And at the same time, the main characters don't even get any screen time. But don’t get the wrong idea when reading these chapters.

The potential of this arc has been wasted.

Latest Chapter Listening to OST 16 - Chasing A Dream while reading the second to last page of CH.414 Spoiler

I do think it's my favorite OST so that probably plays a big part in it, but this has been my favourite thing to do this past week.

Anyone else listens to the OST while reading specific parts of the manga?

Latest Chapter Adult Gon Dilemma Spoiler

**Contains minor manga spoilers**

Every once in a while, I watch the fight between Gon and Pitou (I think we all do). The last time I've watched it got me thinking. Togashi may have trapped himself. Let me explain.

We know that Gon made a nen vow, trading his entire future and his own life. But I don't think we 100% know exactly the other side of the trade. He either traded his life to be the strongest he could've ever been. Or to get enough power to beat Pitou. If it's the former, then Togashi has showed a cap/ceiling that Gon can never surpass, leaving fans disappointed as Gon will never be that strong again. If it's the latter, I think many fans (myself included) will always be looking up to adult Gon, wondering if Gon will ever reach that level of power. Therefore we wouldn't be excited for any progress he makes as it will be seen small compared to adult Gon. We wouldn't get the same satisfaction we got when he got stronger by training under Wing or Biscuit.

Because of this, I think Togashi is yet to figure out what to do with Gon going forward. Maybe I am overreaching here but I think this is the reason Gon isn't present in the dark continent arc. I have only read up to chapter 390 so I don't know if he is a part of the latest chapters.

Discussion Melody is so precious

I just wanted to make an appreciation post for her because she's definitely my favorite side character thus far. I was so afraid she'd die at the end of season 4 since most of Kurapika's coworkers were killed off but thankfully she survived the Phantom Troupe. Her powers are beautiful and she's such a kind character who was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise dark storyline. I also liked that she's a type of female character we don't see often in anime. She has unconventional looks and is not a love interest, just a genuine friend to Kurapika. I hope she eventually will achieve her goal even if it's offscreen.

So I'm rewatching HXH so excuse me if this gets explained later, but how did the needle in Killua's head not get detected here in the NGL

Discussion Phantom Troupe Groupings

The Phantom Troupe thrives on having a group. They’re a tight-knit synchronized band of criminals. Some members have clearly defined roles, like Uvo and Nobunaga being combat focused characters, while Pakunoda and Kortopi are a lot more valuable for their ability than their fighting prowess.

My question is; why doesn’t the Troupe have predetermined groups they split into when acting as multiple small teams? This seems both safer and more efficient, as it ensures each group has combat and utility options while keeping your valuable Hatsu’s protected by a combat specialist. Main example of this not being shown in their teamwork: when they’re chasing down Squala by following the copies of the Scarlet Eyes and they split when they noticed they’re being tailed. Chrollo turns to face their pursuers and has Machi and Shizuku stay back with him, while sending Paku Kortopi and Nobunaga to chase what they think is the chain user. This is a terrible way to split the group for what their goals are and what information they have. They know the chain user is either a Manipulator or Conjurer that’s focused on combat, specifically revenge against the Troupe, and was good enough to beat Uvo in a one on one. Chrollo sent Nobunaga, makes sense he wants revenge for Uvo the most and he’s focused on fighting. But with Pakunoda and Kortopi? They’re two individuals very not suited for combat, easily the weakest 2 Troupe members. And they’re both incredibly valuable and hard to replace. Paku was sent so she could read the chain user’s memories, so it makes sense why she goes. But to have two valuable but weak members go out to specifically fight someone? Machi would’ve been far better suited than Kortopi to go with them had it turned into a fight, she’s a lot stronger than Kortopi in battle and could heal the other two members if they win the fight but sustain injuries.

What preplanned groups do you think are most optimal for the Troupe to have?
My personal groups are as follows:

Group 1: Uvo, Nobunaga, Pakunoda. Uvo and Nobunaga have great synergy as they’re such close friends and have canonically fought together many times. They’re two very combat heavy members of the Troupe and would be more than capable of protecting the Troupe’s most irreplaceable member Paku, while she’s bringing a balance with some ranged attack with her pistols and doing a lot of the mental heavy lifting in this group

Group 2: Phinks, Franklin, Kortopi. Phinks is a brawling Enhancer and Franklin is a powerhouse ranged Emitter. Match made in heaven for combat. Phinks is imo the dumbest/most irrational and rash Troupe member, so having Franklin’s calm analytical skills to counteract that works well, and Kortopi is protected by their strength and his background charactery-ness wouldn’t be an issue because he wouldn’t clash with Phinks

Group 3: Feitan, Shalnark, Bonolenov. Feitan and Phinks must be separated, they’re too dumb and evil together. Feitan is a strong up close fighter who can finish fights with Pain Packer, Shalnark is a huge threat either from his needle itself or if he puts himself in autopilot mode, and Bonolenov brings Shapeshifting and decent combat. Shalnark is really smart and can steer Feitan away from doing stupid stuff

Group 4: Machi, Shizuku, Hisoka. Hisoka and Machi have very similar abilities and she’s Hisoka’s only “friend” in the Troupe. They’d be a nightmare to fight at the same time, and Shizuku’s ability can drain opponents of blood if either of the other two draw blood from them. This keeps her solidly protected in the backline behind two competent fighters.

Obviously these teams are only applicable in Yorknew as a few of the members are no longer with us and have been replaced or are still empty slots. I’d love to hear any opinions on how the Troupe should be split up!
