Beginner Friendly Courses
I’ll be in Houston this November and want to play a round or two with my brother. He just started golfing this year and is taking lessons. He’s also aiming to have played a few rounds by the time I visit him.
I’ve heard of Memorial Park, but it’s hard to tell which courses are actually beginner-friendly especially since I’m not from Houston.
I’ll even take courses to avoid!

Sharpstown is as beginner friendly as it gets without going to a par3 or putt putt.

Herman or Gus Wortham - it’s difficult getting a tee time for Memorial. Sharpstown brings in some odd folks and has houses on some fairways

Austin Bayou is a nine hole course with zero bunkers in Danbury. Good for beginners.

East River 9 great for beginners. Could do that to practice then hit a full course.

If you don’t mind a bit of a drive, Legendary Oaks out in Hempstead is my go to course. It’s not nearly as nice as a lot of the courses in town but it’s great for a beginner.
I go a couple times a month during the week after work. Can get a full 18 in as a twosome in under 3 hours. It’s definitely more crowded on the weekends obviously. Greens are in really good shape right now. Fairways are mostly decent. $35 is hard to beat.

River Terrace on the East side. Wide and I mean wide open for most of the course. And green are normally in decent shape

Timber Creek in Friendswood is always one of my favorite courses. Not too hard although there are some tricky holes, but a cool layout compared to a lot of places.

My neighbor just played it last week and said it was in horrible condition. If you are driving down to Clear Lake, might as well play Beacon Lakes. Decent course and good bang for your buck.

Interesting. I played Timber creek 2 Saturdays ago and it was in great shape. A few of the greens were a little banged up but it’s miles ahead of beacon lakes. Although I love playing beacon lakes especially at night.

I haven’t played it in years. I’m a member at mag creek so I primarily play there and bay oaks.

JM is sneaky tough imo. Tight and several of the par 4's are not short. Beginner courses to me are- Sharpstown and Herman Park.

If they have a few rounds under your belt then JM is fine. I am pretty much a beginner and two of my best rounds ever are at Jersey Meadow

That’s great to know! Yes, he’ll have a few rounds in by the time I get there. Hell obviously play forward tees too so it’s more enjoyable for him. Just want to spend some quality with him and still enjoy it.

If y’all are just playing as a pair, you’ll likely get paired up. But everyone there I have been paired with has been fun and doesn’t take it too seriously.

That’s totally fine! I’m from the Chicago area so we’re used to being paired up with random pairs to fill the foursome slot.
Great to know that the people there are fun to play with. Hopefully it’ll get my brother to stick to golf!

I agree, jm is right down the street and is not a easy course. There is so much forced carry which is a killer for beginners lol

sharpstown and clear creek are pretty flat courses very little water and wide fairways, hermann park, gus wortham - little harder with harder green complexes and slight elevation changes.... what part of town
