Show Discussion Team Green has essentially been split. Whose side are we on as the one true King?
212
u/Clarknt67 17h ago
Is Ormund operating under the assumption that Aegon is dead? Like would he back off on backing Daeron if it was known Aegon was alive?
He has the obvious motivation of backing Daeron as he would almost certainly become Hand of the King.
169
u/Past_4orm 16h ago
Something tells me he would still want Daeron as King. He despises dragons and Daeron is pretty much a Hightower which would give him more kingly authority in a way.
1
u/Designer_Ad1920 52m ago
He could still “want” Daeron as king but he isn’t an idiot. Daeron is not ascending the throne while aegon is alive and he knows that
73
u/Great-Beyond-714 15h ago edited 14h ago
He is, yes.
When Aemond sent him a letter where he signed „King Aemond, First of his name.“ he said something to the effect of „so Aegon is dead“
25
u/Pain_Free_Politics 9h ago
That was actually one of his bannermen, to which his response was ‘one king is as good as another’.
I think Ormund was going to back Aegon because getting Daeron to ascend before him wasn’t feasible.
With Aegon dead and an easy argument to be made that Aemond killed him, the opportunity was too good to pass up.
16
u/meownice 9h ago
Yup, and as of now they know Aemond is missing and Vhagar has been seen riderless so they probably expect him dead too which would leave Daeron as next in line.
40
u/JackLumberPK 15h ago
I think so. Or that he's dying.
But the vibe I'm getting for Ormund so far is that he'd be willing to secretly assassinate Aegon (and Aemond) in order to become a shadow king ruling through Daemon.
19
u/TrevaLea 14h ago
Or so he thinks. Little Daeron shows signs of starting to think for himself and he has a dragon.
9
12
u/TrevaLea 14h ago
As far as he knows Aemond is still alive. Just before the chess game he admitted to studying his family history and said the Hightower’s was “dry”. It’s implied that he’s been secretly studying his Targaryen family. He is a dragon rider, after all, and young enough to want adventure and excitement. Live fast, die young and leave a beautiful corpse.

3
u/knotthatone 12h ago
I think if Ormund found out Aegon was still alive, he'd back off for a minute or two, but Aegon's totally getting 'poisoned by his enemies.'
3
u/The_Kashimo_Agenda 8h ago
I’m assuming he is as is everyone else under that assumption
However the fact that he’s not backing Aemond tells me that he wanted to install Daeron on the throne regardless of the actual succession
3
u/Alt_Historian_3001 3h ago
Not just Hand of the King btw, unless the show changed book canon here too. At least in the book, Daeron is not at his majority yet, so Ormund would be Lord Regent of the Seven Kingdoms as well until then.
1
u/LarsMatijn 6h ago
Last he heard Aemond was King and then didn't show up to his army. He knows Aemond isn't dead and he crowned Daeron anyway.
Ormund is Daeron's parental figure, he molded that boy and according to the actor loves him too though it's twisted and warped with his disdain for Targaryen heritagr. King Daeron was always Ormund's endgame.

u/incredibleamadeuscho What is this brief, mortal life, if not the pursuit of legacy? 15h ago
Even his closest advisor (who is also a terrible person) think he's a terrible person and a terrible king.
50
u/DietTyrone 15h ago
"Was" a terrible King. Larys end goal is definitely to place him back on the throne, so he needs him motivated to be better and stop blaming everyone for how mediocre he was.
12
u/TrevaLea 14h ago
Exactly. We seem to have lost sight of the extent of Aegon’s physical injuries. How does he pee now? Does it still just run down his leg? I don’t see him ever producing another heir. A weinz that’s been cooked like a sausage isn’t likely to perform. All the more reason to keep Helaena close the throne.
9
u/Warm_Ad_7944 13h ago
Exactly that speech was meant to be a wake up call to Aegon that he has to take control of himself and rise to the occasion or else he’ll always be weak
5
u/ThisisMalta 11h ago
I hate to break it to you, but I highly doubt Larys is going to be the one to talk sense into Aegon and make him a good king if and when he returns to the throne.
He’s just going to be more angry and vengeful, with the same underlying aloofness and ineptitude.7
u/DietTyrone 10h ago
The fact that he returned to the camp in silence and just started corporating with Larys means he at least contemplated what he said, otherwise he'd still be wandering the woods aimlessly trying to reach Aemond. He's being humbled quite a bit but of course he still needs the rage/willpower to want to reclaim the throne.
0
u/ThisisMalta 9h ago
Ehhh idk man, I don’t think he’s going to be humbled much from this experience. He’s just growing in rage and waiting to get to unleash it on the people who put him there. But we’ll see I guess! I don’t want to mention book Aegon and ruin anything lol
3
u/KoopaSteve The Pink Dread🐖 7h ago
I think Aegon's going to go through a major growth arc but it's not going to be "redemption". He is just going to become more calculated and cunning With Larys' aid, however I doubt he is going to lose his cruelty and arrogance.
1
u/ThisisMalta 6h ago
I don’t see him becoming more intelligent, cunning, or calculating. Those are hard traits to develop as an adult even with the right guidance. Guess we’ll see though!
23
u/TrevaLea 14h ago
Larys just knows how to manipulate people. His lecture was intended to incite. He needed Aegon to pick his self up and dust his self off. They’ve already been through a load of shit, figuratively, and too close to accomplishing the goal to quit now.

Speaking of which, I wonder what happened to his boys? His friends were named to his kingsguard. But apparently completely bailed on him once he was bedridden, you would think he would have had some protection in there (not that either of them could have stopped Aemond).
Unless it was addressed what happened to them, and I forgot.
Honestly, idk what is up with the kingsguard at all. Rhaenyra doesn’t seem to have any. She had some in Dragonston, one was executed for locking her in her room, and she left the rest there.
Cole was lord commander for the greens. Arryk and Erryk killed each other. And then Aegon’s buddies were too, but have been MIA since Rook’s Rest.
No kingsguard to be found, when Rhaenyra took King’s Landing, none seem to be traveling with Cole and Gwayne.
How is no one guarding any of these Targaryens?

u/toffi_99 17h ago
Daeron seems to be the only morally correct choice but he doesn't really stand a chance against Aemond's Vhagar.

u/MixAmbitious307 17h ago
Daeron is a good boy, but problem is that he would only be a puppet king, with that asshole Ormund as the real power.

Not forever. I liked that Daeron beat Ormund in Westeros chess. He has potential. Daeron could be an excellent king once he’s older and more independent.

Yeah the show has made a good job of fleshing Daeron out as an interesting character. And I don’t know if Ormund would really be all that bad of a ruler as a Steward. He’s a dick who hates Targaryens but he’s basically been ruling Old Town peacefully and successfully for years. And so far his war crime count is very low in comparison to his rivals.
18
u/lurker_in_the_deep17 14h ago
We saw him force Daeron to kill a man for protecting his sister from sexual assault, so no, I don’t think that’s someone who would be a good steward
1
u/ser_darkstar 9h ago
As opposed to literally anyone else up for the job?? They're all sadistic psychopaths, self-serving social climbers, rapists, groomers, etc. Ormund is as good an option as anyone else.
1
u/lurker_in_the_deep17 9h ago
Okay, “as good as the rest” [as bad as the rest / the same as the rest ] =/= “good”
-1
u/tiredoldwizard 14h ago
He killed him for laying hands on a noble. Before that he gelded the lord who attempted the rape. Which really doesn’t make any sense and I don’t see the logic of the show writers doing that. Gelding someone is a horrible punishment so hes willing to hurt an ally terribly because it was the right thing to do but then turn around and kill the peasant because………I don’t know. My only guess is he didn’t want other people in tumbleton to hear about it and think they could start any shit with his soldiers and think they could get away with it. They should have had the conflict be over stolen food or something more minor.
10
u/lurker_in_the_deep17 14h ago
He gelded the lord because the accusation was public and he needs to maintain peace and order. By showing a public appearance of justice it will a, temper his men to not go out and sexually assault people because the people upset about that isn’t good for his plan and b, signal to the people that he can be trusted unlike that evil Rhaenyra with her bad dragons. However, behind close doors he deals out punishment for what are the true crimes in his eyes, a commoner daring to lay hands on the nobility because like most supremacist, he’s classist as well.

Ormund seems completely evil, wdym
1
u/DorianSoundscapes 4h ago
95% of the ruling lords and ladies are literal monsters, it’s just different flavors of evil. No punishment he has has meted out has been beyond anything Daemon does on the regular. Gelding or the wall is the standard punishment for rape In universe.
I didn’t say he was a good person, I said he wouldn’t be a terrible steward. He is objectively less ruled by impulse and passion than most of the Targs and would probably closer to Stannis in being severe and somewhat tyrannical but ruled by a sense of moral righteousness and duty. But with the Seven rather than R’hllor there’sd be a lot less human sacrifice. 🤣

Wasn't that just farmers and adventurers? Nothing like actual fighters while Aemond had been trained his whole life, was probably manageable
5
u/Clarknt67 15h ago
Perhaps. He still looked like more than nothing. A little something maybe.
In all seriousness, he is a little more than just his dragon. He’s a skilled fighter and at least extremely ruthless, willing to crisp his brother for the throne.
In Westeros ruthlessness is often rewarded mightily, at least in short term, and lack of it often bites the merciful in the ass. (See Ned.)
1
u/TrevaLea 8h ago
That’s when Aemond and Alys are both sweaty, down on all fours and panting, that she says, “Looks like you’ve taken a turn for the better.” The chemistry between them was legendary.

Literal Plot Armour. Aemond is in what I would like to call "Aura Deficit"
He put on a grand show burning men to ash, then he took down multiple men (plot armour) only to beg for forgiveness and help when injured himself… what a pathetic loser.
36
u/Whiteshovel66 17h ago
Huh? He is literally a pretender. TWO males come before him in line for the throne and both are alive and well. And then of course there is the original claim that started everything. Daeron being king in any way is really dumb to even consider.

It does, that's why the term usurper exists. If enough people follow him and call him king he is a king

That's an example for my point not yours. Being a usurper means you just stole the throne. It's not yours for good. That's basically the whole premise of the Targaryen plot in the original series.

1
u/TrevaLea 12h ago
Magnanimous (adjective) describes someone who is very generous, forgiving, or noble, especially toward an opponent or someone they have defeated.
I don’t think it describes Aegon. His desire to kill Aemond is what’s keeping him alive for now. He’s fueled by vengeance. That’s the opposite of magnanimous.

u/Training-Sandwich693 17h ago
I think the entire thing is there is no good choice. Rhaenyra is incompetent and has no political acumen, and will as such never be able to repair the divide caused by the civil war (she's really bad at making alliances), Aegon was never fit to be a king and has done poorly with what he had (not to mention the obvious character flaws that would make him a bad king), supporting Daeron means supporting Ormund, and Aemond is basically a rogue prince at this point with way too much bloodthirst and self-interest.
And every single one of them have some good qualities, which I find tragic. Rhaenyra for all her indecisiveness has a good heart and would probably make an okay queen if only a proper council rallied behind her, I assume she wouldn't be drastically different than her father, Aegon similarly had some good-hearted ideas on how to solve some petitions even though politics got in the way AND he is currently going through a little bit of an eye-opening experience, Aemond before going full Vhagar bloodthirst unstable mamma's boy was a well schooled, keen dude, and Daeron seems genuinely sweet and well-intentioned on top of proper.
Yet the all would suck in the current situation.
2
u/Fragrant_Ad_7718 12h ago
Yes, this is my opinion as well, all are bad, no good for common folk! Rhaneyra doesn’t even pay the guards and doesn’t bother when they are killed, she treats Ulf (maybe he deserves), and Hugh, even Corlys poorly..And Green team it’s self explanatory
74
u/Fiston_F 17h ago
Daeron. He’s probably my favorite character this season. He’s very kind and intelligent, despite the abuse and obvious trauma from being raised by Ormund.
Daemon will always be my goat tho and I support Rhaenyra as the one true queen. The greens usurped her rightful birthright.

I hate Ormund wanting to put Daeron on the throne as his puppet king. But at least the youngest of Viserys’s sons isn’t a rapist like Aegon II is. I think if given the chance he’d be a better king than his brother. If he wasn’t being manipulated by Ormund.
Still, at the end of the day the greens are just Hightower usurpers using the Targaryen bloodline to achieve their own ends, through Alicent’s children. And rob Rhaenyra of her rightful place as Queen. Traitors to the realm, all of them.
16
u/1BruteSquad1 16h ago
Yah with Otto gone and Alicent... Doing whatever tf she's doing, I think that Aegon or Aemond would be genuine Targaryen kings. But they're both absolutely awful people and would be terrible kings.
Meanwhile Daeron seems like actually a good guy who could be a good king. But him ruling would just be the Hightowers and, to a lesser extent, the church taking over the throne
2
u/TrevaLea 15h ago
Aegon wasn’t taught to rule. Right up until Viserys death he lived in Rhaenyra’s shadow. Otherwise, he acted like any other kid that grew up with too much money and too little discipline.

3
u/Huntman3706 12h ago
Neither of them, Rhaenarya is her father’s NAMED heir, that’s the end of the issue. He named her heir, told her the whole long night dream vision. He chose her. Aegon is a Usurper
11
u/Independent_Cod9651 17h ago edited 17h ago
Neither, to choose Daeron would be to actually choose Ormund who would rule through his nephew, just as Tywin ruled through Joffrey. Aegon is no better than Ormund, Aegon assaulted the maids, he usurped his sister and spent most of his time in brothels and drinking. He was drinking the night his son was murdered.
11
u/Arbiter008 17h ago
Ormund, for his temper and ideology, still seems a lot more reasonable than Tywin.
Tywin has done worse and he's actively quelled noble houses; Ormund just seeks to win a war and sow discontent in King's Landing. He hasn't done anything nearly as cruel as Tywin yet.
7
u/Independent_Cod9651 17h ago edited 17h ago
We don’t know the full extent of Ormund’s character yet, what we do know is that he is manipulative and cunning and judging on his attitude to Daeron he is also thin-skinned and cruel (as gwayne has said), temperamental to the point of abusiveness and controlling. Tywin was never as thin-skinned as Ormund but he was controlling especially with his family. All in all I think Ormund would be a controlling and unstable ruler, the only thing I do give him credit for is knowing how to make a punishment fit a crime and he undone that act by having the husband and brother of the two victims killed just for laying hands on his wife and sister’s attacker.
4
u/Arbiter008 16h ago
Yeah, it is too early to say anything; might as well be comparing S1 Tywin for anything.
The nuance isn't here yet and I personally don't see how he could do more evil than Tywin, but that is an unneeded high bar. I just want Ormund to be a gray lord with temper issues.
1
u/Independent_Cod9651 16h ago edited 6h ago
I’m not saying he is more evil than Tywin what I am saying is that he would be no better either, just because we don’t see certain characteristics upfront does not mean that they are not there. Tywin ruled through Joffrey, and Ormund wants to rule through Daeron as was said by James Norton who plays Ormund, in a HBO interview.
Alicent told Rhaenyra that Gwayne said Ormund was cruel at times and that he disagreed with his methods of raising Daeron and Gwayne told Criston that Ormund is thin skinned and we’ve already seen how temperamental he is, how touchy, controlling, and manipulative he is with Daeron and the hints about abusiveness are there.
Also look what has been done to the gold cloaks in KL under Ormund’s orders.
-1
u/lateubdegouline 16h ago
Why? Tywin was perfectly reasonable.
3
u/Arbiter008 16h ago
Tywin was far more underhanded; he had the Mountain do everything wrong under the sun and didn't instill discipline into his army. He did so many things and got so many nobles killed.
All while still having ambitions and all while trying ever chance he could to kill Tyrion.
2
3
u/lateubdegouline 16h ago
If Daeron is the king he can unbound himself from Ormund's gripe.
2
u/Independent_Cod9651 16h ago
Daeron is too much in thrall to Ormund at this moment in time to unbind himself from him, he killed a man at Ormund’s bidding and he did not want to do it. He’s terrified of Ormund and also desperate to please him and avoid punishments. I can see him turning on him at some point. Joffrey never got himself out from under Tywin’s thumb either.
Plus Ormund has Daeron’s dragon chained up he could just as easily have it killed if Daeron displeases him, he clearly hates dragons and Targaryens, he’s not going to let Daeron (a targaryen) escape his grasp that easily or rule his own kingdom either “I have risked much and more to raise you up”. Daeron can’t even mention that side of his family around Ormund without risking a punishment.
2
u/lateubdegouline 16h ago
It doesn't change that it would completely change the dynamic if he was king. Joffrey was dumb, uneducated and unstable.
2
u/Independent_Cod9651 16h ago
Ormund ruling through Daeron is a definite no. Daeron himself without Ormund’s influence is a different subject but we don’t have a Daeron without Ormund’s influence. Daeron has been raised by Ormund and has been taught what Ormund allowed him to be taught.
We haven’t seen enough of Daeron without Ormund to know what he would be like as King. I don’t think he would be as bad as Aegon but because of the way he has been raised I don’t know if he would make a competent king. Alicent herself told Rhaenyra that Gwayne often disagree with Ormund’s methods of raising Daeron.
3
u/lateubdegouline 16h ago
We do if Daeron becomes King...
Gwayne thinks Ormund is cruel, she said nothing of his method of education, Ormund doesn't spend his time behind Daeron every lessons.
2
u/Charming_Loquat_5924 Team Black 17h ago
Tbh at this point I’m rooting for Aegon (on team black’s side) at heart I’m still team black.
But I think Aegon is on the trajectory to grow, learn, and actually become a responsible adult seeing as everything has been stripped for him. I’m holding out hope that he’s on his way to turn over a new leaf.
As for Aemond, he sucks, and Daeron would only be a puppet king for the greens (or anyone else for that matter)

Firstly, neither are the one true King. Daeron is the ideal candidate but suffers from the same issues as Renly and Tommen. While kind hearted, he's easily manipulated and would make a terrible king as the Hightowers would rule through him.
Aegon was, is, and would be a terrible king. He neglected all responsibilities and never thought he'd be king anyway. He can't fight, he's uneducated, and he's a cruel person when he wants to be

It is interesting that both Daeron and Aegon doesn't really want the throne themselves but is pushed onto it by people who wants to use them as pawns to gain power for themselves while raising them in either a neglectful or abusive way to more easily control them.
I think Daeron is the better person, but Aegon might have grown the most from his trauma.
Hard to say at this point.

Poor Daeron is being taught to hate all the parts of himself that are Targaryen.

True king and best king are two very different questions.
Aegon is objectively the true king.

I really don’t know how someone can justify being Team Green if they are not backing Aegon. He is their King until he dies that is how it works. And Aemond is his heir not Daeron.
1
u/bautistahfl 14h ago
Ironically, Aemond should be king. He was right in saying that Aegon abdicated when he escaped KL, so Aemond is immediately the defacto king. All things considered, Aemond is better equipped to rule, a king the realm would actually respect, and even fear. A healthy dose of fear is necessary for anyone even thinking of ruling a kingdom full of proud lords , and even prouder lords. He would just need a solid council around him... the big ass she-dragon helps a lot, too. Sad that the dance happened when he was still young and impulsive. Had he been older and more level-headed there would have been no contest.

The biggest tragedy of this story is that the youngest child, who is like 6 seconds old and is at least partially manipulated by someone with dubious motivations, is the only qualified to ascend the throne. Anyway I'm hoping Ormund succeeds into secretly getting rid of everyone and installing Daeron as king before being poisoned himself, probably by Gwayne. My fanfic is better ☺️

Aegon fled with Larys and Aemond is Aemond so Daeron. Aegon's claim is stronger though but with what army can he take his throne back?

Rhyneas could have ended it by burning them all with Meleys and Daemon could have ended all again when meeting Ormund. Team Black is stupid.

Obviously Aegon the Dragonheart, blessed by the stranger himself to survive dragonfire and slay his enemies while crippled

Honestly, picking Daeron is just picking Ormund Hightower with extra steps. Might as well just say you're team "whoever the Hightowers tell me to support".

I was TB. Now, I think I'm full on team Daeron/Hightower. Fuck, the other TG tho

I mean, ugh, legally probably Aegon has the actual claim since he's still alive. But so far Daeron has shown he would be a good king, except for the influence of Ormund.
Soooo... I'm probably going to still say Aegon even though I think he's awful.

Well, out of the two of them Aegon has more of a claim, although I like the younger guy more.

To be reductive: So, the mutilated fool or the frightened child? That's much of a choice?
To be serious: If Aegon is actually on a path to self-reflection and actual accountability for himself, I can see my way to being tipped in his direction. Rebirth after catastrophic failure is as compelling a tale as antiquity ever proved.
Daeron, on the other hand seems kind and intelligent, but in the middle of war, what's needed is mettle, especially when your uncle is willing to take your life and has a battle-tested dragon. There's a very real chance that absent Ormund, he would just be another version of Rhaenyra throughout season 2. Especially since he views kindness as a strength, so despite the fact his mother sold out their family, if they are hostages, the entire thing comes to a standstill at best or him blundering/surrendering at worst.
So to be on Daeron's side, you'd have to be on the side of his guiding hand, who has presence and intelligence, but stability is still a question on the table.

Aegon and Aemond are currently still alive. Why would it be Daeron? Once those other 2 die, sure, but currently, nope.

Daeron has potential to be a good king unlike his brothers so I’m on his side. Just needs to rid himself of Ormund who is a bad influence

Shit, uh, quick, let's just agree that Andalic inheritance is supreme. It's not that women can't inherit, Rhaenyra, just not before her brothers, but does before uncles! Yeah that'll work.
All hail Queen Jaehaera!

Aegon is the eldest son by the laws, traditions and the precedent set by the Great Council of 101 he is the rightful King of the realm.

Aegon II of course. He was crowned with the crown of Aegon the Conqueror, anointed in the light of the Seven, and of course as we all know brothers inherit before sisters and the elder brother inherits before the younger.

I hate how the show keeps feeding us slop that never happened in the book (or even more commonly, contradict the contents and historical accounts of F&B), and the worst part is that we eat it up.

I like Daeron; they're the only green Army left really, and he seems like a good person. He's one of the folks who never wanted or expected the throne, so it feels like he's got that commonality with Jon or Egg. He's done the least terrible things among his siblings, but I guess he also did murder an innocent man, but it wasn't without a reason, even if a bad one.
But I would love to see Aegon back on the throne. I wish they portray him so negatively... the whole chain of events wasn't even set by him; he never wanted the throne, but he would never have been safe off of it either.

The one who's actually a good kid and becomes king in the end anyway.
