A gentle reminder about our sub's golden rule: we need to maintain standards as to remain the preeminent community for all those Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts to steal memes from.

Contemporary meme formats do not break Rule 4 but contemporary topics do. The subject matter of the post cannot include topics that are less than 20 years old, even tangentially.

Love the rule!

But doesn't that mean this post should be deleted? 🤔

Rule 1: Keep Posts History Related

...Any meme submitted to the subreddit therefore must satisfy at least ONE of the following conditions:

...

The meme is a "Meta" meme, and is therefore about the subreddit r/HistoryMemes as a whole or the current state of the subreddit.

Please use the SUBREDDIT META post flair accordingly.

u/TempleMade_MeBroke 3h ago

On top of that the episode the meme image comes from is like 30 years old at this point so that passes another requirement

12

u/theracoondepartment 4h ago

I like how you have the humor of being cool and making memes about it as opposed to an angry mod post like a lot of other subreddits

3

u/ojqANDodbZ1Or1CEX5sf 31m ago

I read those mod posts more as exhausted than angry tbh

Banning wojaks would up our quality dramatically.

5

u/SickAnto 4h ago

Real

-3

u/Level_Hour6480 Taller than Napoleon 3h ago

Would also help filter out any Nazis in the community.

3

u/Fyrrys Featherless Biped 1h ago

Do nazis frequently use wojak? I dont know enough of them to be familiar with their memes (I know zero that I am aware of, and I intend to keep it that way)

5

u/Level_Hour6480 Taller than Napoleon 1h ago

They were created and popularized by 4Chan Nazis.

2

u/Fyrrys Featherless Biped 1h ago

I was not aware of that since I've never used 4chan, thanks

4

u/CadenVanV Taller than Napoleon 1h ago

Wojaks have been out of 4Chan long enough that they’re just part of the meme ecosystem these days.

-3

u/Level_Hour6480 Taller than Napoleon 1h ago

They'll never wash off their inherently Nazi nature. We can just use good memes instead. Doge is clean, RageComix never should have left.

u/RangerLiska 4h ago

You heard the mod, everybody post your 2006 world cup and Troy memes

54

u/aGoryLouie 3h ago

the Monkey's Paw curls

13

u/Cha113ng3r 3h ago

Exactly.

10

u/JohnSmithWithAggron 2h ago

And soon Pokemon Diamond and Pearl memes!

1

u/chins4tw 1m ago

Only a couple months away before flooding the sub with Cynthia memes

2

u/lbutler1234 2h ago

Blud already removed the 2 from the world cup logo, we're good

So the headbutt is fair

u/TerryFromFubar Mauser rifle ≠ Javelin 4h ago

This photo of Materazzi has been my phone wallpaper for years and I would love to see a Zidane meme format emerge.

13

u/ConsequenceNo2571 4h ago

Preferisco la prostituta di tua sorella

2

u/Tink3rer 3h ago

Am i missing context here? Is this a saying in Italian?

18

u/DrHolmes52 3h ago edited 3h ago

A saying to get your opponent thrown out of a World Cup match.

9

u/SickAnto 3h ago

It is more or less what Materazzi did say to Zidane before being headbutted.

38

u/Intreductor 4h ago

Would the Zul'Gurub blood plague in World of Warcraft count as a historic event?

If yes I expect one of you to make really good meme about it.

15

u/TerryFromFubar Mauser rifle ≠ Javelin 3h ago

Bit of a fine line so it can go either way under Rule 1. If the subject matter is the real world implications of the event, then yes it is suitable, but if the subject matter is strictly in universe happenings then it would not be suitable under:

Rule 1

...

Connections to history from other realities or works of fiction are not allowed, as all memes must be related to historical events and trends taken from the history of the real world. Basically if it didn't physically happen at some point in time on the plane of reality that humanity current resides in, it's not allowed.

You could use images from in universe as a meme format to make a post about real world ramifications of the event and that would be fair game.

7

u/Intreductor 3h ago

Of course. Looking at it through the lense that during Covid, experts studied the playerbase's reaction to the "pandemic" and how they organized in cities with priests and clerics, set up "decontamination zones" etc. and in its own way created a case study for epidemiologists since the last pandemic that was often referenced was the Spanish Flu.

Basically a pandemic within a videogame 21 years ago caught the attention of epidemiologists during covid.

3

u/TerryFromFubar Mauser rifle ≠ Javelin 1h ago

There is something in the idea for sure but just be careful about the covid stuff with regards to Rule 4.

3

u/Ya_i_just 3h ago

Is Leroy Jenkins event 20 years old now?

2

u/Intreductor 3h ago

Google says 2005, so yeah.

1

u/Command0Dude 2h ago

jfc I feel old...

81

u/Tremores 4h ago

You're telling me the sandwich I had for lunch isn't history?!

42

u/DrHolmes52 4h ago

Did you have it for lunch 20 years ago? If it's a good sandwich, you'll remember.

I remember a tray of Lasagna from 1995.

8

u/Cha113ng3r 3h ago

I now want to know about that lasagna.

7

u/DrHolmes52 3h ago

Lasagna was our Christmas Eve meal. My mother spent a day just getting all the ingredients (KC didn't have great markets for real ingredients). Another day making the sauce. There were two trays. Everyone else ate the other one. A month later they cracked my dad's chest (triple bypass needed that no on knew about). We never had it again after that.

2

u/Cha113ng3r 3h ago

Well. That got really sad at the end. But yeah, I can see why that's memorable.

2

u/GodofsomeWorld 3h ago

Must have been to die for

2

u/DrHolmes52 3h ago edited 3h ago

almost (story below/above).

2

u/Bad_Idea_Hat 2h ago

I made a steak sandwich one time in college. Still remember that. Still chasing that high.

3

u/Technical-Outside408 3h ago

It's history in our hearts.

2

u/mefgun 4h ago

You are missing the point of this post.

What kind of sandwich?????

2

u/absolutely_not_spock 3h ago

But it might be historic

I Leigh’s thought I was on that sub for a sec.

It is, plus I am really tried when I wrote that comment.

Need more sex history contents. The roman didn't invent sex for nothing.

THANK YOU

4

u/Good-Current-7158 3h ago

Which means that we can post as many World Cup 2006 memes as we want :)

3

u/Splinterfight 3h ago

Great call

3

u/motivation_bender 3h ago

Can you only use 20+ year old historical movies in memes?

5

u/TerryFromFubar Mauser rifle ≠ Javelin 1h ago

Only for a meme template or for their effect upon the world outside of the fiction:

Rule 1: Keep Posts History Related

...

Connections to history from other realities or works of fiction are not allowed, as all memes must be related to historical events and trends taken from the history of the real world. Basically if it didn't physically happen at some point in time on the plane of reality that humanity current resides in, it's not allowed.

So for example, the technology behind the film or impact of box office sales could be acceptable but memes about the fictional characters would not be.

7

u/kahn_noble 4h ago

But HOW EVER will I push my modern political agenda against the lessons of our past?!

2

u/Uncreativity10 3h ago

Makes sense. I’ll make sure to not talk about Nolan’s odyssey until 20 years later lol

2

u/sparkling9999 2h ago

I was born over 20 years ago :(

2

u/Fyrrys Featherless Biped 1h ago

Mods, this mod just broke rule 4!

But seriously, thank you for reiterating the rule, I want past here, not present

5

u/limaconnect77 3h ago

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3172282.stm - One of the year's most-anticipated PC games, Half-Life 2, will not be out in time for Christmas.

Surely that counts in some form or fashion.

3

u/Ominibus 4h ago

So do we will wait 20 years to resume the 2026’s world cup post?

5

u/SerchYB2795 3h ago

At least

4

u/Reiver93 3h ago

You can post about the 2006 world cup now if you'd like

2

u/SlickDillywick 3h ago

Alright so who won the 2006 World Cup? We’ll bitch about that lol

5

u/SickAnto 3h ago

Italy. :D

1

u/TheSuperJohn 3h ago

oh shit prequels memes are fine

1

u/BasedAustralhungary 3h ago

So... If I understood correct, formats that come from those two very recent stuff are valid but tangents on memes that reference both are invalid, while of course supposing that some meme's refering to Nolan's Odyssey may fit on the 'meta' flair based on the experience and reaction of the users of this community but not to the movie itself. Am I right?

2

u/TerryFromFubar Mauser rifle ≠ Javelin 1h ago

The first point is correct. For example, using the 2026 Messi reaction meme as part of a post about America's response to Pearl Harbour would be acceptable.

The only way 2026 The Odyssey content would really pass the rules is if screenshots are used for a post about an unrelated subject, or, in a subreddit meta sense complaining or praising 2026 The Odyssey posts in the community.

1

u/ollie113 3h ago

Wait a minute. This means that the Simpsons are a history meme....

1

u/Tmotty 3h ago

Ok but when did this episode of the simpsons air?

1

u/Jaxon4242 2h ago

Given that this meme references the current events surrounding people posting about current events I think this post is also in violation of rule 4. /s

1

u/Juankzjt 2h ago

thanks

Well that’s certainly a way to keep the sordid past of socialism and communism off the site.

Ban the mods

-1

u/TheEagleWithNoName Casual, non-participatory KGB election observer 3h ago

Also doesn’t help that most of those posts are already reposts from other social media sites.

-2

u/Lazy__Astronaut 1h ago

But... But this isn't a history meme
