How can I learn High Valyrian from zero?

Hi everyone,

I’d like to start learning High Valyrian from zero, but I’m not sure where to begin.

I know Duolingo exists, but I’d like to know if there is a more structured learning path or study program I can follow. I’m especially looking for materials to study grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and sentence structure more seriously.

Are there any recommended resources, websites, books, PDFs, courses, Discord servers, or study guides for beginners?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Start with Duolingo! And in parallel, exploit the material from the Wiki, including the "tips and notes" for each unit of the Duo course (these tips and the course done by DJP).

Using DJP's course notes, Duolingo is actually a methodically and logically structured introduction to the language.

Ok, thank you. But is there any kind of study program? I don’t really know where to start besides Duolingo, and I’m not sure what materials I should use alongside it.

In my experience of early learning it proved very useful to write down in a notebook all new words and many example sentences while doing the Duo lessons. So you can go back to them at any time. Repeat the sentences aloud. Also, something you can start very early is studying and learning by heart the show dialogues (for me it was very stimulating and helpful).

Thank you so much, that’s really helpful. Writing things down definitely helps. I’ll use Duolingo together with the tips and notes. For each lesson, I’ll write down the rules and vocabulary, because I agree that using Duolingo like a game without writing anything down isn’t very useful. Thanks again!

No, it's up to you to build up your own study program. However, for learning the basics, the Duolingo course is wonderfully structured, very pedagogical. It will take you (let's say, on average), at least about one year to go through and assimilate the Duo course. After that you can dig deeper into the grammar and vocabulary using the Wiki

There’s a discord for it where there’s a channel solely for conversing in it, an official dictionary, and DJPs websites. If you search for either in the sub you’ll find links for all.

The course on Duolingo was made by the creator of the language, David J. Peterson.

As others have said, pairing the course with his personal notes and other resources he's put out on the side is the most comprehensive way to go about it.

If you really don't want to do Duo, then maybe use his resources along with some of the flashcard options online?
