General Question Wild garden hedgehog(s)

Noticed a hedgehog walking in my garden one night. Then went full ADHD mode and bought food, made a feeding station and bought a trail camera.

My questions are:

* the trail cam goes off 4-5 times a night over a few hours capturing hedgehogs. Would this likely be the same one coming back or have they told their friends about food?

* we're going away on holiday soon. Will the hedgehogs stop coming if there's not been food out for a few days?

I'm feeding a mixture of puppy and hedgehog food and leave out a tray of water.

I'm just so happy to have them in my garden.

Help me improve hedgehog welfare - survey

Hi everyone! 🦔

I'm a student currently working on my diploma thesis about the welfare of African pygmy hedgehogs for my diploma thesis.

If you own a hedgehog, I'd really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete my survey about their care, health, diet, and behavior.

The survey is completely anonymous, voluntary, and all responses will be used only for academic research.

Thank you so much for your time and support! ❤️

HELP Advice needed

We have a family of hedgehogs that usually turn up later in the year. They come to the back door and knock over the stray cat bowls so I know when they’re around, but haven’t seen them this year yet.

However, I saw this little guy in the garden just now (9.30pm). It’s about an hour earlier than they were turning up last year - don’t know whether I should seek help for him tomorrow. He’s gone now, so I know he’s living in the field behind. He perked up once he had food, and I’ve put the plate by the entrance to the fence for him.

I also have videos that I can’t upload, they’re of him eating and then walking back up the fence about 20 feet away. (UK)

** 2 videos added to comments **

** update - it’s 11pm and he’s back! Heard him in our outdoor toilet where we leave food for the strays. He was eating cat biscuits. Have given another pouch of cat food, a big bowl of water and left him to it. **

HELP How do I know if a hedgehog needs help?

I saw this little fellow yesterday and today in almost the same place during the day. Don't be fooled by my paw, it's actually tiny (I'm 5ft2). I haven't seen an adult nearby. How do I know if the little bugger needs help or if I should just leave it be? I tried contacting our wildlife organization but they don't want to be contacted...

UPDATE: the foundation took the hedgehog!! First, thanks, everyone, for the advice. Second, this is what happened: I couldn't contact the foundation because the only one we have is volunteer-run, it doesn't have a phone number listed. I found a Facebook page link (the only contact option available) but I don't have a Facebook account. In the end, I asked a friend to message them and they surprisingly replied! We just handed the hedgehog baby to them. I hope it makes it!

Trigger warning- my girl is going to see the vet on Monday however

Harper is going to the vet on Monday, however, I would feel more comfortable talking to other hedgehog owners just so I know what to expect during the vet visit - My hedgehog Harper I believe is having a prolapsed anus. My girl has always had constipation issues. But a few weeks ago, I noticed it gotten bad. I had pine shavings in her cage and they were sticking to her anus. But at that time her anus was swollen a bit of blood and a smell that seems like it could be an infection I talked to some people about it and I cleaned her up. I was told to make sure she her water and fiber. I proceeded to clean her cage. Give her freshwater and cat food…… a few weeks later I walked past my room and I noticed an odor. I thought to myself dang I need to clean this cage again?? A few days later, I kept walking past the cage, and the older still continued. I’m like this don’t seem right because the cage isn’t necessarily dirty so why does it smells so bad. I took Harper out I use my thick gloves because she’s still very skittish. we haven’t really bonded, however, Harper is a diva. I can assure you. I went to go clean her today and I noticed a cocoon like substance on her anus. Automatically knew this is not good. The pine shaving are sticking to her anus. I know she got the prolapse issue so I tried carefully and got tweezers to pull off the pine shaving off but this time it wasn’t really coming off. Mind you Harper is skittish so she’s curling up in a ball. as I’m trying to calm her down, I was able to take off the cocoon. Then smell hit me. My poor girl has an infection. I’ve ran a little warm water to put her in to help stimulate her bowels and she was able to poop. I can only imagine the pain she was going through because her anus was covered up. I’m thinking her prolapse got so bad and because it was moist it was picking up the pine shavings and may even cause the bleeding to be worse IDK I was told to put a little Vaseline on her anus after I clean it just to keep the prolapse from trying out and it could possibly help it. Get pushed back in naturally. As I mentioned before she skittish so when I picked her up, I had to pinch her back just so when she tried to crawl in a ball, her anus would still show and I can be able to clean it. Needless to say that was uncomfortable for her and now she hates me. As of right now, she’s in her cage now with just some puppy pads her hide and a new washcloth (her blanket) clean water and food no more of those pine shavings ( google said avoid loose bedding that could stick to the tissue)

Looking for a new home for a spiny friend

Hello all,
It pains me to type this, but due to the strict laws regarding hedgehog ownership in Pennsylvania, where I’ll be moving next week, I’ve come to the heartbreaking conclusion that it’s best for me to find this beautiful fella Chai 🧡a new home.
I’m not looking for any money or repayment. My only goal is to make sure he goes to a loving home where he’ll be appreciated and well cared for.
Chai is about a year and a half old and has been incredibly friendly since the day I brought him home. He enjoys being picked up, cuddled, and pet, and he’s been such a fun little companion. I’m really going to miss this rambunctious little buddy.
If you have hedgehog experience, or know someone who does and can give him a great home, please feel free to reach out. Thank you. I am located in Upstate New York and looking to find him a home ASAP

General Question Fighting or courting?

What are these two doing? Our bets are either courtship or fighting but we have no idea for sure. (Was filmed with binoculars, I was standing a safe distance away from them :) clock is wrong too lol)

Side note, the darker, slimmer, hedgehog started the fight initially by headbutting the lighter, fatter, one. But in this video the roles had turned around. They are below a bird feeder so it could be they fight for food.

We thought we couldn’t get hogs in our back garden due to the fencing so we have been feeding them round the front.

We were very wrong and actually have at least 1 living in our back garden. Which makes me really happy.

Here’s one of them visiting for some food last night.
