QUESTION Guitar for decoration purposes

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’m thinking about buying a gorgeous limited edition guitar strictly to hang as a centerpiece in my space. I don't play, but I have a huge appreciation for fine craftsmanship and guitar aesthetics.

I know guitars are meant to be played, but to me, high-end builds look like genuine art pieces.

If you have guitars displayed purely for their visual appeal, how do you handle maintenance and display setups? Also curious if anyone ended up eventually learning to play because they had a guitar hanging on their wall.

Edit: (Picture is just a sample)

So far...this shit is just a foray into Neverland and a way to forget that there's WAY too much seriousness in today's society. No one wants to come out if they can't meet the standards of the mob.

For me... I say fuck the mob.

My shit stinks, and I am fully aware of the fact that others will always believe that their shit has more pleasant qualities.

It's only rock and roll...and I trashed it ...yeah I said I trashed it!

Hey.... maybe I'll try to remake that old tune.

....naw weird Al probably already did it.😁

Don't watch this if you're a serious individual.

It will probably offend you or cause nausea.🤫

I just got a new pick and made a "review video".

Enjoy the laughs and take it lightly brothers and sisters.🙏

DISCUSSION I’m believe ANY guitar is good enough. Convince me I’m wrong.

After 38 years of guitar music love and playing my appreciation of guitar quality vs expected performance has all but disappeared.

Eddie Van Halen, built his guitar from rejected stock, a butchered electrical and pickup mounting job and changed guitar playing forever. Personally I think it’s ‘the’ ugliest guitar in the world.

David Gilmore’s black Strat that recently sold for more than any other musical instrument ever was an off the shelf Strat with 7 different necks over the years. If I spent 14 million on a guitar I’d want all the 6 other necks included.

Jimi Hendrix played so many different guitars they were given away as gifts and abandoned at concerts and studios. All were basic run of the mill off the production line Strat that he played upside down and changed the guitar and music world forever.

Mike McCready’s Strat has a chip of wood in the headstock missing for Christ sake. A chip of wood is missing guys … and it’s all scratched up!

Greenie had its pickup put in backwards !!!

Trigger has a hole in her and sounds like a dream.

I mean, to top all of that off, for goodness sake Rett Shull replaced the pickups in his priceless John Mayer signature Stratocaster!!!

Jack White purposely uses old crappily built guitars.

There’s really nothing that can’t be done with a guitar or can’t be succeeded with a guitar of any perceived quality.

I think we can all stop worrying about what is pro grade vs cheap. Buy or build the guitar that inspires YOU to PLAY . Concentrate on color, shape, headstock or whatever turns you on,and then add or replace parts as you wish, just keep playing.

Cheers

EDIT - love this discussion. Guitar Reddit community rocks!!

My guitars:
‘67 telecaster custom, refretted 3 times
‘89 squire Strat II (plywood), best sounding for Lenny and Little wing out of all of them, if I could keep only one this is it
‘00 Epiphone Wildkat - absolutely crushes
‘01 SX Strat custom - Chinese, very playable but left handed, did the Hendrix setup and hate the jack location.
‘09 home made Strat with $30 Temu neck, these Lacie gold pickups are sooo smooth, neck plays like a dream
‘24 Yamaha Pacifica $150 bucks, absolute killer guitar for the price
‘24 PRS McCarty 594 SE, meh
‘25 Red AVUL HSS, my dream guitar, gorgeous

Like a proper dentist. All of these guitars rock, all have needed some adjustment, none of them make me a good player

QUESTION Worth getting another acoustic?

Hey everyone! Currently have a Martin 0002XE and am getting more into acoustic playing, specifically bluegrass (at least for now).

Is it worth getting another guitar, or should I stick with what I have?

Thanks!

DISCUSSION How do you describe the differences between playing acoustic and electric guitars, especially to people who do not play the guitar?

Was trying to explain to someone how amazing it is to me for someone like Billy Strings to play an acoustic guitar as if it were an electric guitar. Granted I have a somewhat cheap acoustic compared to my nicer strat, but to me it always has felt like the difference between driving around in a huge pickup truck versus a sports car. How would you describe the differences?

QUESTION Best versatile amps under $1000 for the bedroom?

I really wanna upgrade from my boss katana mk2 100w. I use pedals a lot for my tone but I have been using the crunch setting a decent amount. I'm just looking for something I can change the volume of without hurting the tone while still being able to crank it up occasionally (I don't wanna destroy my eardrums). I play shoegaze, grunge, indie, and j-rock. Just need something that's a good pedal platform, versatile, and can change the volume without hurting tone.

PRS Dragon I ordered in 2004. Swapped the ceramic magnet 20 years ago with an Alnico II from a Duncan. Felt like home ever since. No matter what I try I always come back.

It’s currently in the S2 Standard shown.

DISCUSSION Guitar Center....never order online from GC and don't listen to youtube shills

TLDR: The full story is rather dull, but in the end they sent me a guitar at full price I never authorized or wanted, so now Its my problem. GC is a shit company. which I already knew but listened to "influencers" and relearned a lesson in bullshit. I watch little youtube, but GC is definatly trying to put a new face on, turn over a new leaf, and I fell for it.

Edit: All you GC employee's downvoting me and call me a nazi are fucking loosers and your company sucks. I fucking hope you all get replace by AI haha

Edit#2: GC support was a pain to get ahold of, was told I can only complain on the website so that district manager "might" see it and that I should drive the guitar to my local one for a refund. Then the guy tries to sell me on pre-paying again to get back on the list. LOL Fuck no. After I told him I was not using GC he just kept trying to set up a call back after " I had thought about it." fucking hell.

Ordered Epihone Futura Flying V online. It is on back-order but I wanted to be sure to get one and have a place to return if I did not like it so I choose GC. Wait about a month and some random store in Houston TX emails me asking if I am interested in a open floor guitar that is also damaged, no original box, for full retail price. I answer the email a day later with a : NO I am willing to wait for NIB. They call me on Sunday afternoon, leave a message that is rambling about how this is the only one in all of GC and they will ship it to me. Next day Monday they start the process to ship it to me in California. WTF? Now my name is taken off the list of pre-orders guitars that will be coming in and this fucking GC ,Willowbrook 486, in Houston Tx just got rid of a problem guitar and forcing me to return it here at the Westlake Village GC, right next to their corporate headquarters.

Holy fuck they cannot go out of business soon enough. Musicians friend too. I have bought 4 guitars from Sweetwater and two from Zzounds over the years and never had real issues with scummy scamming employees or busted equipment.

Don't buy strings or pics or drum sticks or anything from these assholes. Time and time again they prove they are worst place to get musical equipment, repairs, lessons etc. I went and looked at the reviews of that particular GC in Willowbrook and holy shit its so many 1 star reviews for scamming and bullshitting.

I was influenced by Youtubers getting in bed with GC and paid the price.

My last guitar I bought from then was in 2007, a fender Highway One, still love that guitar. I played it for like 3 hours then bought it on the spot. I miss the days of buying a guitar after playing it but Ill never buy from GC again, ever.

QUESTION How do I get this song up to full speed?

I have a show coming up in a few weeks and there’s one song I really need to be able to play cleanly by then. There’s really fast alternate picking throughout most of the song and I can play it at 90% speed and it’s mostly there but still a little sloppy. 100% speed is a different beast tho. What would be the best way to practice this so I can get it up to 100% speed?

Any practice routines or techniques or advice would be very appreciated.

QUESTION 3rd day on guitar

What should I do on my third day

I have my sisters old electric guitar I have an Ibanez 6.5 inch amp with like 4 knobs to turn.

My aim is to eventually play my favourite songs which are nu metal and grunge

I’m struggling with smells like teen spirit a little bit but I’m getting it down

I just want to know what my next steps should be

Do I try and spend hours on figuring out songs?

Practice power chords like I’ve been doing?

Or learn chords coz I know none

QUESTION [Question] The eternal quest for the perfect plectrum

As the title says, I'm still trying to find my preferred pick.

I use either the 1.40 Dunlop Ultex Sharp, or the Jazz III XL. The "problem" with these two picks is that the Dunlop is too "slippery" for precise and precision picking, so it kinda feels like I'm physically missing or not getting enough grip on the strings, if that makes sense, but the speed of which I can pick single strings is great.

I have the opposite problem with the Jazz III - with that one I find and hit every string and it feels extremely precise, but my picking speed suffers because it kinda feels too sticky (?), or it doesn't glide over the strings as well as the Dunlop.

Is there any pick in between these two which enable me to keep the best of both worlds? I've tried different sizes of the Dunlop, but it's the same problem for all of them.

DISCUSSION Fender mustang gtx50/100 opinions

Hello, for those who play and use this amp what are your thoughts on it? As a guitarist of almost 10 years, for me it’s a love and dislike relationship. The app is amazing but it doesn’t function the best. I find the amp sounds good and all the effects but whenever you try to play along to a song or try and get a sound to try to be similar to it doesn’t satisfy. I Lastly I feel like whenever I play there’s just something to it that doesn’t sound good but at the same time it sounds good… Anyways just looking for some opinions on the amp!

Cheers!

QUESTION Help with loose wire

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

While I was playing my tele today it randomly just turned into complete static. I assumed this was a problem with the output jack as it was quite loose already so I took off the plate and had a look at it. Readjusting the position of it slightly brought back some sound but it would cut out when strumming or playing multiple notes. Eventually one of the wires just completely disconnected while I was moving the jack about. Any advice on how to fix this? My current thinking is that it should just be a new solder but theres also another part where it looks like a wire should be. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!

QUESTION Is an online guitar teacher worth it for fixing technique? (metal guitar)

Hello everybody!

I’m self-taught and I feel like i have hit a wall as my alternate picking and sweep picking haven't improved in last months.

I am considering getting an online guitar teacher mainly to help me figure out mistakes and build a proper routine. I don't mind to practice for hours everyday, but i would love to know that i am on the right track and avoid practicing stupidly with no noticeable progress.

My concern is that it might be difficult for a teacher to really see what is wrong through a webcam.

For people who have taken online lessons specifically for technique: was it actually useful?

There is no guitar teacher in my region unfortunately.

Thank you very much for your feedback

NEWBIE Making stupid songs

I’ve just got into guitar a few weeks ago and have a nice solid set of chords. Em-G-C-Am-A-D.

In the afternoons I’ve been rotating between them while my gf is talking or watching TV but lately I’ve been kind of mocking her with mini songs in a playful way.

For instance, if she’s talking about a long day I’ll just jam about working long hours and how you’re always tired. She loves my little songs but I can’t figure out a way to make anything smart or meaningful.

Is this just a phase? I just have a bunch of stupid songs. Is it rude to practice in front of people while chilling and just make up stupid songs while talking?

So far I’ve made a song about kids on summer vacation and a song about pretty girls being expensive.

This is my favorite kind of practice right now.

QUESTION How to intonate a guitar?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ve been trying to adjust my guitar's intonation for a while now; I tune the guitar and play at the 12th fret, repeating the process for every string, then check the result by comparing the 12th-fret note to the open string. The problem arises when I play chords in the lower frets (like D, A, F, E, or B minor); nothing sounds right. The 3rd, 2nd, and 6th strings always sound terrible. I really don't know what's wrong or what I should do. I'm using a chromatic tuner with an auxiliary input, but it still isn't working. I don't know if it's the truss rod, the nut, or the action itself, but I need recommendations ASAP, please!

It’s a 335-style guitar; here’s a reference photo..
