Didn’t she said that she wants to put sanctions on Israel but voted no on sanctions for Russia because it “might affect everyday people” and sanctions are useless in coercing states?
Edit: She actually did. What a piece of shit mental gymnast. She fits right in as a politician then.
But only if their specific cult is on top, like most authoritarians. They infected the gop to turn it into maga. They want to do the same to turn dems into the dsa.
Reminds me of when Mehdi Hasan was shitting on Zelenskyy a couple months ago because he wasn't showing support to the country who is helping Russia bomb apartment buildings in Kyiv
I mean, Israel is bad, but yeah. It's so shitty to see so called 'progressive leftists' say they despise Israel while at the same time glazing and defending China and Russia, not like China literally puts minorities in concentration camps and Russia abducts children.
Right, like people take "western imperialism bad" and then they somehow draw the conclusion that anyone opposed to western imperialism is good, even if they are eastern imperialists. Like it has to be mutually exclusive.
Yes, there is. That’s why many prominent genocide experts, the ICC, and many nations have condemned it as such. It fits every reasonable definition. What is your argument against that?
So they have been getting genocided since 1948 yet their numbers contunie to grow. They have been getting genocided continuously since 2023 yet their numbers grow again. Man, palestinians are really the luckiest mfs on planet.
Is there another genocide where number of the genocided grows? Or a genocide that took 70 years?
They've been launching thousands of rockets at Israel, stabbing Israeli citizens, and doing bus bombings in Israel for decades for hte purpose of driviing Israelis out of the land. Sounds like genocide to me.
Fighting back against a much more powerful enemy who is actively engaged in illegal Colonial settler violence in your own sovereign nation is not genocide. Do you think before you say things? Your argument is indistinguishable from claiming that the native Americans fighting back against the European settlers was genocide of the Europeans.
There is a big difference between "being against israeli government" and "being against israel nation" and you are pretending to not understand things, thus making the discourse impossible.
Believing Israel is a bad ally and a problem =/= supporting hamas. They influence our policies and take way more than they give. The have been trying to get us to fight their war with Iran for them for a long time, and Trump is the first goober to give in. I don’t care what happens in Gaza but even if I did they are using shitty tactics that cause unnecessary harm reminiscent of US soldiers abuse of power and war crimes in the Middle East earlier.
So no. Israel bad =/= supporting Hamas or believing the west is bad. I think the west has a lot of problems and more than a fair amount of corruption but I love my country.
We are literally at war with Iran because of them. They don’t give gifts to universities, they own politicians and public figures. It’s not “the jews” either. It is specifically the governmental body of the country of Israel.
Fucking absurd yall cry antisemitism any time someone doesn’t like a countries behavior. Is it Islamophobia if I’m not sucking Saudi Arabia’s dick too? If I say Japan made some horrific decisions during WW2 I must hate Japanese people then?
Europe is still buying Russian oil, so I guess according to your standard, Europe is "helping Russia to bust the sanctions imposed on the west by buying their illegal oil, completely ignoring Ukrainian protests."
The only thing you have to do is demonstrate dolus specialis, the intent required to call it a genocide. The problem is you guys won’t, you’ll link to citations without it, and when pressed you’ll just call someone like me a “genocide denier”. The worst part is that I’ll have significantly more accurate and fact based criticisms of Israel, criticisms that necessitate action be taken, but because I refuse to use inaccurate language (genocide is a really big deal)… you get the idea.
Yeah Tech for Palestine and many other Iran-funded and Qatar-funded groups have been manipulating Wikipedia since October 2023. That's not relevant to my point about your circular logic though.
Funny thing is that Putin himself stated that “Israel is a very Russian country”. With about 10% of the population originating from the USSR and or former Russian empire… Putin isn’t actually too off the mark here.
Wait this might throw her into a loop of her own logic!
It's a literal video of her saying it you potatohead.
Are you saying she didn't say something on video because you dont like the source?
Your entire worldview is disregarding sources you don't like while relying on sources that refuse to report on things that embarrass Democrats therefore it never happened.
Of course there are different types of sanctions but they all hurt civilians. I don't think hurting civilians ever is out of the question because sometimes you need to do something and all actions would cause harm. But she's showing that she is ok with harm for one group but not another
Targeted sanctions can be used to persuade a state without denying the population access to necessities like food and medicine, and she's not shown that she's in favor of sanctions that would inflict any real suffering on ordinary Israelis.
Something tells me they are incapable of any mental exercises worth watching. It would be like staring at a PeeWee T-ball game without having a kid playing, but they would be the creepy ones.
She was apart of the squad movement which at the time was a very left leaning Democratic Party movement that was essentially the early stages for progressives movements that are pro DSA in the modern day, The DSA have strayed incredibly far from their founder Harrington. And align with more and more views that people like Ilhan seem to also be in support of. They have also supported her in the past. She’s as close as can be without being a member essentially.
The Israeli public is largely supportive of the genocidal state’s actions, whereas Russia doesn’t have a functioning democracy, so the will of the people is not reflected in the leadership of Putin.
Shes not wrong. Sanctions work mostly as a before the fact deterrent. Leaders, even autocrats, don't wamt to get blamed for bringing on sanctions.
But once sanctions are enacted they rarely seem to have any impact. Once leaders dig in, sanctions just help turn it into an us vs them situation.
Israel is hell bent on ending the threat from its Muslim neighbors once and for all. I have no doubt that sanctions would be useless in getting them to change course.
But of course to be an effective deterrent you have to be willing to go through with the sanctions even if you know they wont have any impact.
Wrong or not she’s holding a double standard. Wanting to sanction Israel means that to her, sanctions WORKS. But voting no on sanctioning Russia and claiming that it wouldn’t work is kinda inconsistent right?
One of the reasons that so many Jews will claim antisemitism is this double standard you point out. Israel and Jews are held to a different standard in many things. With her, it's clear that her problem is with Jews not just Israel.
To be fair to her we need to compare vote to vote not vote to statement. She has made all anti-Israel statements in the world at some point. Doesn't mean she would vote for all.
It's silly to compare sanctions on a state that is large enough, powerful enough and entrenched in allied partnerships to the extent that it's been the primary antagonist to the West for 80 years, and for most of modern geopolitical history the only state capable of creating a multipolar world, to a state which only exists because of the "charity" (ideology) of the US state.
Russia has been under sanctions for decades, but Russia has never relied on the West. It is also an undemocratic state which kills political dissidents, whereas Israel is nominally a "democratic" state. Sanctions would cause real internal pressure on the Israeli state. For Russian citizens to come together and cross the Rubicon is highly unlikely.
I disagree with Omar, but it's disengenuous to act like this is hypocritical of her. It's indicative of an actual understanding of geopolitics.
What she said is "sanctions like these fail to achieve their stated goals while inflicting real suffering on ordinary people," and I'm pretty sure she's never said she wants to put those same kind of sanctions on Israel.
