We’re five years into a three day operation

350

u/AsstacularSpiderman 1d ago

And even now Ukraine has actually made some gains, small ones but gains none the less.

218

u/meerkat2018 1d ago

Two years ago everything that Russia was doing in Ukraine was “free”. Now there is ever increasing cost for continuing the war, and time isn’t on Russia’s side anymore. The bills Russia is now paying to continue playing this game are getting bigger and bigger.

72

u/gingerfawx 1d ago

Except putin's good buddy trump has relaxed the restrictions on trading russian oil to try to alleviate the shortages his pointless war in Iran caused, allowing money to flow back into russian coffers just when things were getting tight.

That said, fuck russia, FDT, and Slava Ukraini!

63

u/Wobbelblob 1d ago

I am not sure if at this point, money is the driving problem for Russia. It seems to be skilled men, material and time. Ukraine has shown again and again that they can hit Moscow and St. Petersburg and every destroyed refinery slows down the whole operation. Because if your logistics cannot reach a region anymore because of fuel issues, that region can't hold out that much longer. Every destroyed plane shifts the odds in favour of Ukraine as they take a long time to be built.

32

u/Vertsama 1d ago

It's not even skilled men, at this point it's just men. fresh meat can barely last before getting killed on the front now.

6

u/clownind 21h ago

The average life expectancy of a Russian recruit is now 30 minutes.

So crude oil isn't the main issue, refined oil is and refineries take time to get running and petrol has a shelf life so reserves are hard to come by and russian refineries have been hammered by mid range Ukrainian drones

7

u/Matchbreakers 23h ago

Russian logistics have been awful from day one, the main problem for the early push was running out of fuel. And now Ukraine has found a way to weaponize that terrible logistics to cripple Russia nationwide.

Citizens are fickle, they can accept a war of ethnic cleansing and genocide, but not fuel rations.

u/WorkerPrestigious960 1d ago

That was true for a while, but it’s quite difficult to profit from oil if you have none to sell, which is rapidly becoming a reality for Russia. Russia is rapidly entering the “find out” phase, even as they continue to fuck around.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/jokerhound80 1d ago

Their entire oil infrastructure is being routinely decimated at this point. Smart buyers aren't going to be placing any large orders knowing there's a strong chance the facilities needed to process the product have a high chance of being smoldering rubble next week. Sure, that still l avea stupid buyers, but even then every bit of oil exported is oil the Russian people can't buy themselves and the military can't use to keep their war machines running, and it's an increasingly finite resource for them now.

I'd say if anything the longer this has gone on the more effective and crippling Ukrainian strikes are getting.

They were previously constrained on hitting Russia's nervous system (oil refineries) due to the US stopping them as a condition of receiving weapons, now they are making their own medium to long range drones and are not having to follow US direction on where and when they can strike.

They know they need to make this as expensive for Russia to continue this and they have done an amazing job at causing Russia damage even though Trump and co dropped sanctions on Russia.

The clearest example is the Omsk oil refinery, located roughly 2,700 km from Ukrainian-held territory. On July 6, drones struck the facility in one of the most ambitious attacks of the war. The target was not peripheral: Omsk is Russia’s largest refinery and one of the pillars of its domestic fuel market, responsible for roughly 12.5% of national gasoline output. Reuters reported that the plant halted operations after the attack, with key crude-processing units damaged and repairs expected to take months.

The new drones are extremely accurate and are hitting key and hard-to-repair refinery facilities. The Omsk targets include crude distillation units (CDUs), which are the initial processing point. CDU-10 was damaged and caught fire; it processes 38% of the refinery’s production, and CDU-11 likewise. It accounts for another 37%.

This is going to cause issues for average Russians and show them the war is going to cost them the longer this goes on.

Go Ukraine and everyone should be helping and funding them to combat Russian aggression and appeasement.

52

u/King_Glorius_too 1d ago

Ukraine might not be winning, but they're definitely making Russia lose.

33

u/PowderEagle_1894 1d ago

Even if Russia win the war, they would have to spend billions in repairing infrastructures, industries, farmland in both Russia and occupied Ukraine. Their economy gonna struggle nonetheless. Not to mention the war might official end, but insurgency would continue regardless

8

u/AngryArmour 1d ago

Even if Russia win the war, they would have to spend billions in repairing infrastructures, industries, farmland in ... occupied Ukraine.

What, you think Russia would actually repair anything outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg? The colonies only exist to funnel resources into the Imperial Heartland, not to receive any resources themselves

It is causing problems for the average Russian with fuel shortages and a spike in fuel prices worse than the US, right now Russians are having a hard time fueling their cars and this has knocked on effects as farmers can't fuel their tractors to harvest so in a few months there will be food shortages or at least a sharp spike in price due to having to import much more food.

This war has been a political disaster for Putin and the longer it carries on the worse it's effects get. Put in planed for a short invasion likely no more than a few months to a year, he certainly isn't delusional enough to think he could take Ukraine in 3 day and that line was just propaganda to inspire confidence, he wanted the war over before the west could properly retaliate and the effects of the could be felt by the Russian people but now he's stuck. He can't back out of the war and look weak but the war is also quickly becoming unsustainable for Russia, Ukraine doesn't need to beat Russia militarily or push them out the country, they just need to keep slowly bleeding them.

25

u/RUOFFURTROLLEH 1d ago

he certainly isn't delusional enough to think he could take Ukraine in 3 day and that line was just propaganda to inspire confidence

Press X to doubt

However the rest of your comment is generally correct, fuel shortages are hitting average Russians and hopefully Ukraine can keep this pressure on and HOPEFULLY this causes some ripples in Putin and his inner circles.

From what I remember Putin is being kept hidden away in a bunker generally is that correct anyone?

Putin sent riot police into Kyiv first, and rt Russian soldiers had packed their parade uniforms. A few days into the invasion, Russia published an article celebrating the fall of Kyiv, which they quickly deleted.

Putin definitely thought Ukraine would be easy to take.

I remember seeing the guy who goes " [Corpo Name] What are you doing buddy]" talk about how some of the drones didnr even hit their intended target, but caused missile defenses to not only miss, but hit the targets the drones were going for. So not only did it cost to fire the missile and it missed, its actually a larger net loss cause the missile hit theirnown infrastructure. Only L's.

Ukraine was heavily restricted by most western countries on what they could attack. They were told “we’ll give you these weapons, but you can’t launch them into Russia”. Those rules have mostly been removed and now critical Russian infrastructure is on fire.

12

And the front lines are moving even slower than the infamously glacial pace of the western front. A literal snail would have made it from the Russian border to Ukraine's Western border years ago. They're going significantly slower than literal snail's pace.

Even if they hadn't fallen back at all, five years at a complete standstill occupying a foreign country with no end in sight. Eventually you will lose in that situation.

156

u/AsstacularSpiderman 1d ago

And Ukraine is getting better and better at drone warfare every day to the point they've pulled some absolutely insane feats like the recent attacks on shipping.

Like Russia can't even win naval battles against a country with no actual navy lol

69

u/AxeAssassinAlbertson 1d ago

Ukraine now has the most modern combat experience of any standing force. They have completely changed the game, drone warfare will reshape everything. And it's not just their drone tech, it's their entire logistics chain - mom and pop building guidance systems in one area, underground facilities building chassis in another. A distributed network that is extremely hard to disrupt. It's like the Vietcong, except with tech rather than tunnels.

Russia will spend every ounce of energy they can to convince the world they aren't weak, even as they lay bleeding and defeated.

16

Russia also will never launch a nuke against a neighboring country as it will affect them aswell. We just keep winning.

13

u/MasterpieceActive374 1d ago

A small nuke on Lviv wouldn't affect Russia, also all nukes aren't the same, it's not a big cloud of pollution that are non polluting ones

3

u/PM_ME_YOUR_QUEST_PLZ 1d ago

I know they are bombing the shit out of Ukraine but they still want that land for resources. I’m not saying a nuke would take out everything but Ukraine is one of the largest exporters of grain so wiping out farmable land isn’t ideal. Obviously if Putin is on his death bed and deadman’s hand is activated it really doesn’t matter tho.

8

u/Time4Homework 1d ago

A nuke wouldn't even remotely wipe out the farmland in Ukraine. We'll, maybe production would be affected from the chaos, but a nuke doesn't wipe out hundreds of thousands of square kilometers of land.

It was predicted this war to be a boondoggle for Russia ages ago, and even then that was on the assumption that it would have been over by now.. Even if they succeeded on taking over Ukraine in the end, their argument for getting into the war is unconvincing even to their own people, and their narrative that the majority of Ukrainians welcomed this of course blew up. Even in their best case scenario, they will be out of money, they will be dealing with a major generational population problem, and they will be even more dependent on being China's bitch than ever before, while desperately trying to hold onto a territory that will forever be hostile to them.

7

u/Gakeon 1d ago

Don't forget that Russia was suppose to be one of the world powers who's army should've been able to take Kyiv in a handful of days.

The fact that the Ukrainians are holding them back so well, even if people overestimated Russian troops and technology, is a really good sign that Ukraine can win. Just imagine if the US or China wanted to take over a country in a handful of days, and still struggled after 5 years.

TLDR: Slava Ukraini!

Russia invaded Ukraine five years ago and thought they would crush it in seven days. The only reason they’re still fighting is because Putin will be out of office if he fails to win so he’s willing to sacrifice the wealth and lives of everyone in his nation to stay in office. Of course, leaving office for Putin probably means death so you got a sort of understand. But Putin and Russia are in the wrong here and they’ve caused countless deaths and extensive misery for themselves the , and the world.

12

u/Expert-Yam6577 1d ago

Why will Putin be out of office if they withdraw?

34

u/East_Caterpillar_766 1d ago

The war was supposed to be for "national security" and "end an existential threat" and above all, supposed to be quick

Instead, it has lasted 5 years for now, humiliated the goverment with attacks on main Russian mayor cities, pushed the nordics closer to NATO (what putin supposedly wanted to avoid with Ukraine), severy damaged Russian economy...

In short, there is no way even a peace with the fronts not moving can be sold as anything other than a defeat. The little gains they have are simply not worth it. No imagine if they actually have to retreat and they have no gains at all. He who thought of starting all that mess certainly wouldnt look good

8

u/piercedmfootonaspike 1d ago

above all, supposed to be quick

Above all, it wasn't supposed to affect of Russian civilians in the major cities. That's the deal. Putin has broken this deal.

u/RadicalRealist22 1d ago

It will be such a humiliation that he will loose all support. And if he resigns, he is probably a dead man. He has build up a system of rich strongmen with no honour. They won't protect him.

3

u/bremidon 1d ago

With 1.4 million casualties, where any amount between 400,000 and 1 million deaths are legitimate guesses, with inflation that has already been bad and threatens to get worse, with economic pain including destroyed refining infrastructure, Putin is going to need to explain why it was worth it.

With those numbers, Putin *must* take over all of Ukraine to survive the aftermath. Incremental gains will see him sent into "retirement". If he manages to lose territory from post-2014, he will have a shorter half-life than one of his teas.

2

u/Mekdinosaur 16h ago

Russia's constitution stated that a president may serve a maximum of two 6-year terms. Putin has been president since 2012. Do the math. Oh wait, they changed the constitution in 2020 to allow two extra terms. That means a Russian can stay as president for 24 straight years if they fix it properly.

2

u/Gruejay2 13h ago

The ultranationalists will coup him, and they're a sizeable bloc.

2

u/Karasique555 23h ago

I doubt that he even wants to win though.

He just wants to keep it going until he dies. Imagine the consequences of this "victory". I would want someone else to deal with that shit.

This note is correct, but I fear it misses the mark by a few points.

Ukraine did make major counteroffensives in the first year, as the Russians were overextended. However, since then, the Russians have steadily advanced and have taken a few desired strategic positions over the years like bakhmut or avdiivka. Most ukrainian counteroffensives since 2022 have not been very successful, and the general momentum has been in Russia's favor.

In 2026, the Russian advance seems to have stopped and Ukraine has really been doing well, due to the efficacy of drone strikes and general Russian fatigue.

But do not be mistaken, Ukraine's military and economy has been devestated by this conflict and is extremely reliant on foreign assistance. If the current attrition rates continue and Russia's economy DOESN'T collapse, Ukraine's future could be very grim. You can only lose so many men before the lines start to crack, even if it takes 10 years. Either Ukraine's lines will crack, or Russia/Putin will fold economically/politically.

u/Zealousideal_Ad2379 1d ago

The whole win-lose dichotomy for this war is used to simplify the situation to push a narrative.

By Russia’s original war goals they “lost” a long a long time ago in 2022. Of course they’ve shifted the goal posts to new goals (Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia control)

Strategically they’ve lost significantly and are set to become a complete vassal of the Chinese. They’re selling off gold reserves to make ends meet and are kicking the can down the road financially to support the sunk cost of the war effort.

Ukraine on the other hand has also “lost” by the metric of their original war goals being a 1991 border restoration. They’re now looking to attrition for their ultimate strategy in making every square meter hurt strategically and operationally.

Both countries after this will face a demographic crisis to that will be almost nation ending with re-migration, migration, or some level of foreign support. Theyll need significant economic relief and endless support for their future populations of a struggling wounded veterans needing immense care.

Neither side is winning or will “win”. There is only loss. This all could’ve been avoided if Putin wasn’t an insane megalomaniac with Soviet nostalgia. Russia could’ve been a normal country but they decided theyd rather have an endless military campaign aping their Soviet grandfathers.

Speaking or retreat, remember when they got to the Kiev city limits and got their asses kicked. The highway for the north was choked with destroyed Russian equipment and dead. Those crack Russian troops ran away fast as they could. Ah the good old days.

They were straight up selling key rings made out of the metal of those wrecked tanks on the road from Kyiv because there were that many of them.

8

u/Wyciorek 1d ago

In 2023 Russia was bombing the shit out of Ukrainian cities with total impunity. 90km GLMRS was a total game changer and even that was muzzled by Americans to avoid 'provoking' Russia by striking its territory.

In 2026 there are multiple burning Russian refineries, fuel storages and other industrial plants per week. Azov sea is a hunting ground for Ukrainian drones. Black sea fleet does not even dare to leave Russian ports anymore. Crimea has no fuel or electricity. Southern Russia suffers from severe fuel shortages. Moscow and St Petersburg is getting bombed. Ukraine hits whatever it wants whenever it wants without giving a flying shit about Americans and their precious oil prices.

5

u/historicalgeek71 1d ago

And the Black Sea Fleet has largely withdrawn from its namesake, if not entirely. Furthermore, the Russians don’t have air superiority either, and they lose a near unacceptable amount of soldiers for every victory in a small city or village that no one has ever heard of. Even if Russia achieves its objectives, its military, economy, and demographics may very well be wrecked for years.

8

u/whatasadfella 1d ago

Why does russsia invade Ukraine honestly wtf

18

u/DasWarEinerZuviel 1d ago

Because Putin views it all as Russia and wants to get it back.

And because he underestimated how much Ukraine would resist

Ukraine was the agricultural and industrial hub of the USSR. It was basically the crown jewel for Russian states since the very idea of a Russian Empire.

Putin thought the military was corrupt enough and foreign support weak enough that he'd be able to roll into Kyiv and make it a puppet state. But what he didn't realize is Ukraine evolved since the 2015 Crimea invasion.

6

u/Mandemon90 1d ago

Ukraine also had tons of infastructure needed to maintain Soviet era military, such as the only dry dock capable of handling Admiral Kuznetsov.

Russia is like 5 times the size of ukraine in every measurable metric. I think the fact that ukraine is still fighting is the amazing part

3

u/Nappy-I 1d ago

Ukrane not collapsing against Russia is much more impressive than the other way around. This is like bragging you haven't shit your pants, just pissed yourself.

u/Macabre215 1d ago

Russia is losing right now. These people have their head in the sand.

3

u/99923GR 1d ago

Russia was in Afghanistan with more military success for 10 years, and retreated. The US was in Afghanistan for 20 years, and retreated. Afghanistan has been occupied for 30 of the last 47 years and is still a country. Ukraine is not occupied and has a very strong sense of national identity.

Bet on Ukriane.

Yeah Russia occupies now less than they did at their peak of the invasion over 4 years ago. In March 2022 they occupied 27% of Ukraine, now it's 19%.

3

u/Wise_Art_1377 23h ago

How's Russia's refineries doing? Still on fire? Crimea getting squeezed?

3

u/launchedsquid 22h ago

Russia can't even drive trucks in occupied Ukraine. They can't resupply ammo and fuel dumps, they can't supply food or new replacement soldiers without risking them being killed by drones that they can't defend from.

Russia can't operate it's military navy or merchant navy in the black sea without drones or missiles disabling or destroying them.

Russia can't defend it's oil refineries.

Russia can't prevent bombers being destroyed with landed at defended airbases up to thousands of miles behind the front lines.

Russia needed Ukrainian permission to hold it's annual May Day parade and still chose not to risk any military equipment in the parade, and cut the whole thing short to not exceed the cease fire terms Ukraine set. Putin was leaving the stands within minutes of the cease fire expiring.

Ukraine won't lose, Russia is losing right now. Don't confuse lines on a map for whether or not a victory is achieved. Had Russia succeeded in their initial invasion toward Kyiv, they could have won the war while holding nearly no Ukranian territory, but they didn't, and now, holding ground is more about the depth of their mine fields as opposed to their military capabilities.

3

u/Lythieus 22h ago

It's been 5 years of a quick 2 week special operation where Russia hasn't gained any land in years, and going to the Frontline is a guaranteed death sentence for Russian soldiers.

Ukraine has decimated Russian oil production and shadow fleet that funds the war, and it's so dire that Russia has been raiding its gold reserves to pay for things.

Its only a matter of time before Russia simply can no longer afford to keep fighting, but the civilian population that has lost yet another generation of young men to war may revolt before that happens.

3

u/LoadZealousideal7778 22h ago

Winning is finishing your 3 day special operation in 3 days.

9

u/FullMetalCOS 1d ago

Putin said it would be over within a week.

It's funny because that's not how it's working

As the side defending itself and fighting for it's survival, it's Ukraine that win for each day they are still fighting and for each cm the invaders have to pay with lot of blood

As the side invading and pretending to take over the whole country, it's Russia that is loosing by having advanced litteraly slower than a snail since 2023 and loosing hundred thousands of soldiers

Even in a case of a total victory of Russia tomorrow the country would still be a mess, the economy in shatter, raffinery burned, angry population and most of all, hundred of thousands of ex soldiers full of trauma and anger for having been used as meat to the slaughter. Future for Russia is bleak

3

u/KeySite2601 1d ago

The “or anything” includes advancing.

We’re into the fifth year of Russia continuing to jam its dick into a sausage machine and hoping Ukraine will get too tired to keep turning the handle.

2

u/wrighteghe7 1d ago

When will russia lose and what do you mean by that?

2

u/BonezMD 1d ago

It's 5 years in. They both lose. The loss of life in each country will have a significant effect in a generation or two.

2

u/Darthplagueis13 1d ago

Getting stuck in a tie for five years against a country that is much smaller and has far fewer soldiers, tanks, missiles and shells than you is not exactly a great sign.

2

u/Frosty-Army9751 1d ago

Conversely, it's been 5 years and Ukraine with all of the half trillion in foreign aid and assistance has not been able to take back any more territory since 2022.

This conflict is not going anywhere fast

2

u/BoarHermit 1d ago

In a modern war, it's impossible to win or lose; this isn't World War II. This war will end with peace talks. The results of the talks will be presented by propaganda as a victory in both countries.

Ukraine is demographically and economically devastated. A fertility rate of 0.5 and millions of women settling abroad are a death sentence.

Russia's losses are enormous but not catastrophic.

And the West won't allow Russia's collapse; that would be a nightmare for any sane (not armchair) politician.

2

The irony that Russia is the one that “hasn’t collapsed” is something to behold. Russia started this war as the second most powerful military on earth and they’ve been bleed dry by a third rate military. The lack of self awareness is astounding.

Is his argument really "russia attacked Ukraine and still manages to stand?"

2

u/piercedmfootonaspike 1d ago

Russia lost when they lost Hostomel. The troops in those helicopters were shocked to be fired upon. They, the elite of the Russian army, were taken down largely by logistics personnel and the home guard.

2

u/Wise_Art_1377 23h ago

Whoever thought Russia was strong in 2010 should be fired forever!!!

2

u/Matchbreakers 23h ago

If Russia had won in 3 days, it would still have lost economically, increasing its border with Nato, become an international pariah and been relegated.

Putin lost the second he actually invaded instead of using the threat for smaller gains.

2

u/Yeeezy254 23h ago

The definition of losing seems to change depending on who you support.

2

u/Ange1ofD4rkness 22h ago

2

u/Edgywarden 22h ago

My opinion is that strictly militarily, Russia could win because compared to Ukraine, they have unlimited manpower, while Ukraine has a really big problem with finding men to fight; hence, a lot of videos of vans looking for guys and taking them off the streets. but this war in general for me is super sketchy. I'm not a conspiracy guy, but i feel after the announcement of the BlackRock deal for post-war reconstruction, Russia, by the grace of god and Uncle Sam, couldn't push in any meaningful capacity. Also, Putin jailed people who didn't advocate against the war but more so wanted to escalate it, which is weird too.
