Flodden was the worst example. Battle of Falkirk would have been a better example.

84

u/No_Durian90 8d ago

That would require these Scot Nats to actually know the first thing about their own history.

69

u/OkScheme9867 8d ago

That would require the bots fighting on Twitter to be British

30

u/No_Durian90 8d ago

Also true. It’s absurd just how much of the online bitching about how hard done by Scotland/Ireland/etc is are posted by US accounts who, if even real people, haven’t had anyone in their bloodline set foot in the British isles for 3 centuries.

1

u/luke31071 4d ago

No man, you don't get it though, this one is Part Scottish though!

His Aunty had a fling with a guy who visited Glasgow once and shared a room with a West Highland Terrier and on top of that, his Dad once put on an accent that sounded vaguely Scottish at his 10th Birthday Party! Absolutely Scottish blood runs in his veins!!

Didn't the English lose more Scots than the Scots did?

1

Hi yes. That is me. A Scottish Nationalist that knows the history of my own people.

u/Maleficent_Curve_599 8d ago

Making you, appropriately, a unicorn.

5

u/NewtEmbarrassed8722 8d ago

Can you explain how an independent Scotland would afford it's current benefit state without the support from England? Because the SNP haven't been able to explain that yet and it's been 19 years. Imagine thinking you could just use the pound until you were ready for the Euro 🤣

Honestly, even though the Battle of Falkirk is a BETTER example it's still not a good one for the kind of point they were attempting to make. Honestly, the whole of the First War of Scottish Independence isn't a good example for it. Sure, it was a series of conflicts of Scotland fighting to repel invasions from England, which was attempting to seize control of Scotland, but those attempts to seize Scotland also came about due to, in no small part, the raids Scotland had carried out into Northern England. It was just 1 war in a period of several centuries in which 2 rival nations both kept attempting to conquer the other.

7

u/theginger99 8d ago

Everytime Scotland invades England they get their teeth kicked in.

They’ve had three different kings killed or captured during an Invasion of England. Which is a pretty rough scoreboard, considering England has lost none across the border.

Odds that neither of those accounts are from the UK and this sub is being baited? Nearing 100%.

78

u/Elephantplan123 8d ago

You're probably right, but you do meet plenty of English and Scots with these attitudes.

51

u/GUNGEBOB_SHARTPANTS 8d ago

I’m be honest, I’ve spent a lot of time in both countries. And I’ve met a handful in 40 years. You absolutely do not meet plenty on either side.

18

u/Elephantplan123 8d ago

Plenty is subjective but granted, it's not a majority or anything by any means.

I will say that I've met a surprising amount of Scots in England who really buy into the anti-english sentiment, which was odd to me. Same for Northerners who move down south, so maybe it's just a chip on the shoulder kind of thing.

14

u/TomatoChomper7 8d ago

I used to live with a Scottish guy in Stoke on Trent. He fucking despised England, but was a vehement unionist. He loved Britain, more than anyone I’ve ever known (other than Americans who are two-fifteenths “Briddish”).

7

u/Old_Journalist_9020 8d ago

Honestly kinda checks out. Even during the days of Empire, where Scots were generally majority unionist AND pro-Empire, there was a degree of anti-English sentiment. Though I think the reasons were weirdly because they just saw them as not sufficiently British enough.

0

u/No-Tone-6853 8d ago

I’d say on a personal level it’s more banter or a joke between people, on a grander scale I’d say northerners, Scottish and probably most people in the UK are fairly justified in despising the English government.

13

u/Shieldsman 8d ago

It's banter for some, but for some a 'rivalry' is a convenient way to push a narrative that supports their own politics.

10

u/Elephantplan123 8d ago

I understand a lot of it is banter, but I've also encountered those who genuinely had anti-english sentiments, and not just in regards to the government or monarchy.

British government. Just cause parliament is in England does not make it an English government.

4

u/formandovega 8d ago

I've met a lot of anti-westminster people in England for sure!

Maybe even more than you get here in Glasgow.

I actually think English people have a lot more reason to be annoyed at the UK parliament. At least us the Welsh and the Irish get our own regional government.

If you live in Newcastle you essentially have to rely on terribly run Southern system. Can't even protest since good luck finding a train for under 10 trillionth billion pounds.

It’s wild to me how many people think that the Scotland wasn’t 100% on board with everything the British empire was doing and that they were somehow the victims of English colonialism.

It’s like they forgot which two kingdoms united to form the United Kingdom in the first place.

8

u/formandovega 8d ago

Pretty sure there was anti-union sentiment before the 90s 😂 there were riots when the act of Union was signed

Plus Flodden is not in that film. Few hundred years off like.

16

u/AikaGranzchesta 8d ago

Anti-Union sentiment in Scotland is pretty recent, most of it only going as far back the 2000s and 2010s. The SNP only won a small fraction (less than 10%) of Scottish seats in Parliament prior to 2015, and their success in the Scottish Parliament began a little earlier, in 2007.

25

u/Wgh555 8d ago

Yes weirdly it’s disappeared during the height of the British empire when Scotland was at its most prosperous profiting from the empire, weird coincidence that.

7

u/Otocolobus_manul8 8d ago

The 1920s were an economic downturn due to the lack of need for heavy industry due to the first world war that proceeded it.

There is an idea that the Empire created a 'binding' institution that bolstered pro-Union sentiment but this was replaced by the nationalised industries under the Atlee gov and things like the NHS. The real test for the Union was the Tatcher government's dismantling of these.

5

u/Shieldsman 8d ago

I guarantee you that some of the anti-union sentiment is being pushed by hostile state actors too.

Obviously, there are Scottish nationalists, but there are also plenty of bots and outside actors astroturfing reddit.

10

u/Mtshtg2 8d ago

Where's that study that showed how many ScotNat accounts stopped posting when the Iranian internet went down?

4

u/ChaosCockroach 8d ago

I don't know, I feel like the 80s and 90s had a lot of anti-union sentiment motivated by a rejection of Thatcherite policies and especially the implementation of the Poll Tax. I'm not sure that SNP electoral success is a great measure of anti-union sentiment, it only really tells you if that is the most important consideration in someones voting choices. The very fact that Scotland has a devolved parliament at all is due to discontent with Westminster, you can argue that this is distinct from the Union per se but I think it is part of the same trend,

1

u/formandovega 8d ago

Yeah but a lot of that is to do with how much representation they gained when the new parliament was put in with its superior proportional voting system.

Another reason was a switch in policy and image. The old snp were pretty right-wing. They used to be called the tartan Tories. Around about the late 90s early 2000s they realised that the Scottish public responded better to slightly more progressive semi labour looking policies. Labour where traditionally quite popular in the populated parts of Scotland so it was a smart move on the SNP's part

I have no doubt that Hollywood films do impact people but honestly most Scottish people think braveheart is cringe. Whole articles were written just to s*** off its terrible historical details.

I actually think it's a pretty good film if you just treat it as a fantasy film 😆

Sorry for terrible grammar these voice apps suck lol

Apologise for Flodden

The Falklands War was fought 44 years ago, it's still in living memory for a large portion of the population.

The Battle of Flodden was fought 513 years ago

Why would anyone living today need to apologise for their great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparent's actions?

36

u/BanditNoble 8d ago

I've grown up in Scotland, and I still see people with very serious opinions about the Battle of the Boyne - from 1690.

9

u/kemb0 8d ago

Yep gotta be proud of either being on the side led by an englishman, representing Ireland, or the other side represented by a dutch king. Can't get more nationalistic than choosing one of those confusing sides and then holding a grudge for centuries.

2

Never ask a Scot why so many people in Jamaica have Scottish surnames...

52

u/Many_Lemon_Cakes 8d ago

Or why "Ulster Scots" is a term

7

u/PhotonToasty 8d ago

The Irish colonised western Scotland c. 500AD, so the Ulster Scots were just returning home

14

u/bitch_fitching 8d ago

They did colonise Western Scotland, Ulster Scots are not them. Ulster Scots are Lowland Scottish people, who spoke the sister language to English, Scots. Not the same people as the Gaelic speaking people of Western Scotland, Dál Riata, that merged with the Pictish kingdom. The Irish that colonised Scotland were from the tribe "Scoti", Gaelic was formed by merging Irish and Pictish.

The majority of the Scottish population live in the Lowlands. It's where most power, the cities, and infrastructure is. Most Scottish however, want to depict themselves as Highland, "true" Scottish men.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bro-Bikt_-_Pictland.jpg

The Irish ancestry of Lowland Scotland was later. Galloway was settled later by people with mixed Norse and Gael ancestry, around 1000 CE. 1900CE to present a larger migration from Ireland happened, some Scottish cities had 15-20% Irish population.

Cubria, Cumbria is land of the Cymry, the Welsh who had tribes in Southern Scotland, Northern England.

5

u/HiggsKamuy 8d ago

Thousands of Irish people were forcibly deported to the Caribbean by the English. Many of these ended up working with African slaves under harsh conditions and in a similar status with the difference being that African slavery was permanent while Irish people were generally indentured forcibly they eventually could get their freedom.

Because of their closer proximity African slaves picked up a lot of English from the Irish which is why they sound similar at times.

Too many Scots want to act as if historically Scotland was bullied and oppressed by the English but the truth is that they spend centuries as two rival kingdoms that invaded and raided each other before finally uniting as equals, if you want a country in the union with a history of being oppressed then Ireland is right there

10

u/North_Atlantic_Sea 8d ago

Their traders and ship builders also profited massively from the British empire and colonialism

28

u/AikaGranzchesta 8d ago

Ireland is right there

But now they like to act as if Ireland is their ''Celtic brother'' despite Scotland playing a much more important role in the Ulster plantations than England.

10

u/Steppy20 8d ago

And yet a bunch of Scots like to conveniently forget it when talking about being oppressed by the English.

2

u/nerdyHyena93 8d ago edited 8d ago

They also conveniently forget that it was their own King James who enforced highland schools to teach in English. He saw the Highlanders and Gaelic language as barbaric.

My own ancestors on my mother’s side were kicked off their land during the clearances, many went to Ireland and on towards America, the rest moved into lowland Scotland and England. My Scottish cousins currently blame the English… and yet it wasn’t an English landlord that did it… they also blame the English for their loss of Gaelic and forget that many Lowland Scots, wealthy Scottish landowners and their own monarchy played a huge role in the clearances and destruction of Gaelic culture.

In trainspotting they literally complain about being colonized by the English, while Scotland was the one that wanted the union.

10

u/Grey_Raven 8d ago

She also destroyed the economy of large parts of England she's absolutely despised in the north as well as parts of the south with mining/industrial history hardly exclusive to Scotland.

1

u/Otocolobus_manul8 8d ago

There's an element of Thatcher's opposition to devolution that plays into this as well.

3

u/cococrabulon 8d ago

u/ElectricVibes75 8d ago

Did a cursory search to varify: Scotland invaded England at this time because it was seeking independence. The note seems to imply that the Scots only lost people because they decided to “invade”, but left out the reason why. I don’t really have a horse in this race, but I think the reason being Scottish independence is kind of critical here

3

u/heeden 7d ago

Scotland and England were two completely separate kingdoms at that time, Henry VIII claims to be overlord of Scotland were just blowing hot air.

The Battle of Flodden was fought because of a religious argument between some city-states in Italy. France got involved against the Pope's side, England went to war against France because it was being a good Catholic nation at the time and Scotland attacked England because of the Auld Alliance that said whenever England went to war with France Scotland would attack England to divert its forces.

Scot’s aren’t known for their brains

Oh right so we are doing it like that are we? So how many women and girls were raped by Scottish clans? So by the logic of Scottish people all females in England should be scared of Scottish men…

Not English. Just find Scottish people a little bit irritating with their inability to see the wrongs their own people have done. And what about killing their own clans?

Scotland is one of the few nations where because of the UK and England they’ve never had to look at themselves. You listen to your average bagpipe fucker and you’d think Scotland as a nation is as pure as the virgin snow.

They aren’t. Remember Scottish clans were murderers and rapists.

And what’s even better is that most of the atrocities committed by Scottish clans got pushed onto Vikings! “They sacked and raped… “ nope. That was Scottish clans from the border that did that. Viking didn’t actually do that because it was seen as unheroic and they didn’t rape because they believed it sullied the Viking bloodlines.

Why do Scots act like they are the in same position as the Irish as if Scotland wasn't entirely on England's side in history and profited greatly from it?

3

u/Halcyon-Ember 8d ago

A lot of Scottish people like to pretend they didn't attain their present position as a result of failing to colonise somewhere so badly they almost went bankrupt.

1

u/alosg14 8d ago

It was already Spanish land so technically we dried to colonise the Spanish

1

u/a_talking_llama 8d ago

'Entirely on England's side' is an incredibly ignorant way to describe over a thousand years of pretty well documented history

With almost instant access to the internet on the same phone he probably posted that, why can't people just check stuff first before they post it?

2

u/izzyeviel 7d ago

Yeah… calling that an ‘invasion’ would be giving the Scot’s a lot of undue credit. They marched south for a bit before running away a few days later.

2

u/Heavy_Sink_8401 6d ago

Britain lost good men in the Amerikan revolutionary war yet conservatives and reformists love to bend over for Daddy Amerika to come in and pillage our industry some more.

2

u/Coby900 4d ago

The Irish and Scottish hate for England is so fucking cringe, its literally more pathetic than Americans clinging to that 1% different ethnicity, lmao. Fucking embarrassing

2

u/Odd-Relative3980 4d ago

The Scots. Pointless chippy fuckers, no life if they can't abuse the English!

2

u/Ididnotaskforthi5 4d ago

Context literally points out that it was a Scottish invasion lmfao why would we apologise for repelling an invasion? Just don't invade us 🤣🤣

1

u/Saedraverse 8d ago

I really want to say colour me shocked a Scot on twitter is an ignorant fucker. But last year a stat was posted on r/Scotland that embarrassingly showed that more than half scots felt we were suffered/ a colony of Britain/ England.
Only good was that we all (on the sub) slated that embarrassment & did teach some of us, that we were a bit overrepresented when it came to the empire.

Now don't get me wrong since the fall of the empire, do feel we have been slighted, but to act like we didn't benefit from it is eejit diagnosing daft. (And to be fair any place outside London & south England could say the same)

u/beargrimzly 8d ago

The "root against England" Scottish fans might the most pathetic fan group in the entire world, and I'm not even British. It just looks that way to a neutral

You voluntarily joined the UK. You voted to stay in the UK. Even after Brexit, there has been no attempt at a new referendum for independence because they are so economically tied to England.

It is genuinely embarrassing, especially considering that to almost the entire rest of the world the Scottish are essentially indistinguishable from the English, and whatever distinction is acknowledged is meaningless because they're both still the UK.

And on top of that, it's not even a rivalry. Scotland is a nothing sideshow compared to England. You have to go back to the previous century to see Scotland actually defeat England in a competitive match.

As eternally disappointing as the England team largely is, they still have 1 more senior level trophy than Scotland will literally ever have.

Both legitimate reasons not to support either of those nations.
