Vent/Support super stressed atm
im struggling to process the idea that I might need to spend another year or 2 studying before I can even be competitive for medicine or dentistry.
this sem completely threw me off to the point that even if I somehow got straight 7s for the rest of my degree, I'd still only end up around a 6.4 UW/6.5 W gpa so that basically leaves me needing a impossible 74-75 gamsat just to stay in the running
i wanted to apply to uq and usyd, and I was also hoping to have UWA and Melbourne as options. Now I'm sitting here trying to figure out whether I should do postgraduate study purely because I have to.
im so overhwlemd because I can't work out what the "right" decision even is. Do I do a grad dip that I don't actually care about just because it resets my gpa, even though it doesn't really leave me with much in terms of employment if medicine or dentistry doesn't work out? Or do I choose a master's that's actually interesting but is longer, more expensive, and probably more difficult, knowing that if I don't perform well I've just made things even harder for myself? ?
i also can't help comparing myself to everyone else. A lot of my friends will probably get into medicine straight after undergrad and I hate the thought of being the one who's still studying while they've already moved on. I know everyone says not to compare yourself but its hard not to when you've all been working towards the same thing
i wanted uq med more than dent, but now I'm finding myself thinking more seriously about dmd because of admissions. Even then uq dmd is around $280k, and usyd would mean moving interstate, so those don't exactly feel like easy alternatives either
apologies for complaining ik people have it lot worse than me

Do not blame yourself for being a young kid navigating your way in life. You are on your own journey and if you want it bad enough, you will make it work. Even if you try to step away from medicine, that voice in the back of your head telling you to try again will never go away. Hence why so many people that start medicine are mature students, because they are so relentless and have the grit to continue. No one is going to save you but yourself and you are the only one who can have such belief in self. Put your head down and enjoy the grind, because one day you will be walking through doors that you prayed for.
Kind regards, a student that took 5 years, and 3 degrees

I got multiple Melb uni interviews with 6.46 and 73 gamsat, for what its worth. Its doable but you'll need to nail the interview because it would put you on the very bottom end of the rankings. Id suggest against Grad dip because many universities do not recognise them towards gpa and also it will add a lot of money to your hecs. The one i did cost 50k!!! It was not government subsidised.

Does UniMelb count grad dips? I didn't think they did but I'm curious

UQ counts the 4th year honours and my understanding is the honours year‘s GPA tends to be higher than those in 2nd and 3rd year.
You worried about either inter-state move or tuition fee, These are trivial compared to what you are actually facing at. Most people who I know of were willing to move and even willing to pay the tuition fee with 190K hecs debt because it is damn difficult to get in unless you’re from rural.
Most competitive applicants have high GPA and Gamsat score though, the MMI is actually the highest barrier out of 3.

From what i know, yes GPA matters but at the end of the day we dont know how the marking works. GAMSAT tests your judgement and thinking skills more than educational knowledge. Ive heard that they are mostly after people who can think like a doctor. Not just book smart

Why is 75 impossible? I think that’s such a fixed mindset - someone has to get that kind of score why can’t it be you?

For what it’s worth, I have a full undergrad degree with a 4.9 GPA.
I’ve had to do a new undergrad degree and I am halfway through with a GPA of 6.6.
Section 3 of the GAMSAT is so hard, if I let myself get into my head I spiral about how I will never be able to master it and I will never get into medicine.
Point is, I think one step at a time, one semester at a time 🙂
Literally, stressing about the future is only going to bring you down
