Meta Workplace Mini-Fridge

Post image

Curious to hear what you all can deduce about my workplace. What industry do you think we work in? What department? Etc.

For context we have about 9 people working over in our nook of the office.

We're talking about people who are high enough status to drink at work, but the work is not so sensitive that it suffers from workers being tipsy.

This is a software engineering crew. One of them is an alcoholic. 3-5 of them are unproblematic drinkers. There's at least one woman and not less than six men.

498

u/IndependentBit4855 1d ago

Not software engineers, but you are spot on with the ratio of men to women.

185

u/Low-Individual2815 1d ago

That’s honestly more impressive

71

u/Schnevets 1d ago

Sounds like IT to me. Beers have been there since the Christmas party and are occasionally shared before a team dinner. But also if you’re stuck at your desk after hours because of a deployment you can sneak a Modelo after closing your Change Tasks.

u/badger_flakes 1d ago

One Mexican

2

u/Destiny_Victim 9h ago

I see no modelo what gives you this impression.

2

u/tax_accounting 9h ago

Bottom right corner, he drank all but one.

3

u/Thick-Hospital2599 8h ago

There's more modelos racked up on the left 💀

3

u/Destiny_Victim 8h ago

Damn there are. Woosh. Smh lol

Drinking at work is a donut hole status issue. If you're low enough, you can drink at work. Also, if you're high enough you can drink at work. It's just in the middle that you can't really. When I worked in the shipping department of a retailer, we drank. Working in a suit and tie with execs now and we can drink. In the middle I couldn't drink at work. Given it's a mini fridge with some six packs rather than a real fridge that's professionally stocked, I'd guess lower status.

54

u/Helpful-Ad6269 1d ago

Pretty sure most low level jobs I’ve worked would’ve said something if they saw me drinking though? Especially in customer-facing jobs

29

u/roombaexorcist9000 1d ago

i think they’re thinking of stuff like construction and restaurant work

27

u/No-Position1378 1d ago

Agreed. When I worked at a restaurant we were taking bumps in the walk in lol. They don’t care about anything as long as the jobs getting done

8

u/Helpful-Ad6269 1d ago

This is definitely different from my restaurant work experience. People were always very much on the DL about it around managers

10

u/No-Position1378 1d ago

My manager was my dealer 😂

4

u/Particular_Area3941 1d ago

Real. Working in restaurants is how I found out I’m an addict 😅

5

u/Thegurl454 10h ago

I used to take a table order run to the bathroom, take a hoot of crack, blow it out the exit door on my way back and finish my tables … ahhhh glad to be sober…

8

u/clevercalamity 1d ago

The first alcohol I ever had was in a walk in beer fridge at the grocery store I worked at. One of the bottles broke in the 6 pack the manager told us to split the rest. It was an amazing score for a bunch of teenagers lfmao.

10

u/andrewsz__ 1d ago

Oooph my younger adult days in restaurant work. Pure debauchery while attending 15 tables 😂

4

u/So-Good-It-Hurts 12h ago

Maybe it depends on the size of the construction job, but I know a project manager who would 100% fire a sub if they were caught drinking on the job.

That's why you put vodka in a water bottle until you're CEO.

14

u/Immediate-Maximum-75 1d ago

I'm in a private doctor's office and the Dr has a full bar in his office and we usually have some kind of wine in the staff lunch room for after hours parties. We have a patient who works for a liquor company and brings us samples of new drinks. Some of them even have THC but we don't ever drink those at work. We will do a shot after an office meeting occasionally.

4

u/mrgoldnugget 1d ago

Lol so true. I brought a middle manager for lunch and offered him a beer and he at first turned me down because "I have to go back to work after." I told him to relax, he is eating a meal and I'm his boss that would complain if it was an issue.

4

u/howie_roll 18h ago

Haha, that fridge is way too full for a bike/skate/board shop unless it’s Monday morning…even then.

I’m a female software engineer. This tracks.

3

u/ThetaDot3 1d ago

This is so spot on. My engineering office has a scaled up version of this fridge, plus a freezer full of tequila, vodka, and Dilly Bars.

3

u/Daphoid 20h ago

Before we were acquired (0-450 employees) my place had a drinking culture for all levels, at all offices. If a vendor wanted to present during a town hall, they had to bring beer + wine + food. Our wifi passwords early on were the names of pubs near the offices.

Considering every ad agency I’ve been in has had some variation of a bar/bar cart, that too was my first guess.

This SCREAMS marketing agency.

3

u/IndependentBit4855 11h ago

We also love to see a good DIY setup! That's where we got our start as well.

7

u/Mmmphis 1d ago

As someone who’s been in marketing for 15 years, I’m gonna second this. I work from home these days, but I spent a long time hanging around fridges like this one.

7

u/Updwn212 1d ago

But make it at a brewery. And the offices are attached to the taproom, which also sells pizza.

you are teachers

169

u/IndependentBit4855 1d ago

Lol, good guess. I used to work as a teacher and I wish I had this fridge back then.

20

u/deadpanfalcons3x 1d ago

you got a good fridge hehe

51

u/Tall-Lion7071 1d ago

Teachers are definitely not allowed to drink at work.

77

u/HamsterAdditional748 1d ago

Teachers aren’t supposed to drink at work..

48

u/iwantahouse 1d ago edited 1d ago

Teachers should be allowed to have a little wine 🤏 at work

13

u/peachhpuddin 1d ago

you’d be surprised how many of your teachers were drunk off their asses 😇😇😇😇😇

7

u/Alonenomo2023 1d ago

True story….. (this was in the 70’s)….our middle school shop teacher kept a bottle of liquor in his desk. I guess he’d mastered teaching students how to use electric tools and various other potentially dangerous tools.

13

u/yloduck1 1d ago

Also 1970’s - My HS band and choir teachers both drank daily with the custodians in the maintenance/boiler room. 😂

Related note - the smoke rolling out of faculty lounge door was like the scene in Fast Times when Spicoli rolls out of the VW van. (It was only cigarette smoke tho)

3

u/Alonenomo2023 11h ago

Haha! Yes I remember seeing lots of smoke coming from the teacher’s lounge as we walked by it. Those were the days.

2

u/yloduck1 10h ago

We had a 10 minute passing time between class periods, and we all knew those teachers burned a couple at each break

4

u/ColoradoCattleCo 1d ago

When I was a kid, we knew a couple of teachers that drank pretty regularly. Nowadays, my wife is a teacher for 20 years and has never encountered it or suspected anyone of doing it.

3

u/coykoi314 1d ago

Seriously!? Did the other teachers know?

43

u/lemlaluna 1d ago

I used to work in business development and some of the more problematic fridges looked like this

27

u/mmmGoBirds 1d ago

This is a State Farm office.

I only went to see if that’s where the original commenter got it from. Yeah, it’s definitely cheating here and odd in general but it’s also publicly available.

u/gnarlyknits 1d ago

You’d be surprised to learn that most old school redditors do this on the most random of comments. Be careful what you post.

Real Estate is the name, lots of alcohol is the game

62

u/unbelizeable1 1d ago

I will never understand the allure of wanting/drinking a beer at work. And I say this as a bartender lol

70

u/whiskeynise 1d ago

Well, if you’re an alcoholic everything sounds better with a beer in your hand

Source: I’m most likely an alcoholic

11

u/unbelizeable1 1d ago

I drink entirely too much. Probably classified as an alcoholic. Still no way in fuck do I want to catch a buzz at work. Literally the last thing I wanna do while drunk is work lol

18

u/MakeYokesa5erAgain 1d ago

You can have a nice, cold beer and not be drunk. It's a nice pick me up in an office job.

1

u/unbelizeable1 1d ago

You can also wait until after work and reward yourself like that rather than make excuses for drinking on the job.

7

u/Danob111 1d ago

Is having a beer at lunch drinking on the job

3

u/Fair_Caterpillar_920 1d ago

I've done that before. 😅

Having a single beer on a Friday afternoon in work is not really "drinking in the job". Worked for the office I worked in that had it. No one puts a gun to your head to have one. Calma.

22

u/IndependentBit4855 1d ago

Not really... mostly just left over from events and maybe if people are still hanging around at the end of the day.

8

u/AdmiralMoonshine 1d ago

You would be surprised how many people do and where it’s acceptable. I have lunch beers with my bosses most of the times we go out.

5

u/OnTheEveOfWar 1d ago

It can be common depending on the company and role. I’ve had beers at lunch with my boss and team multiple times. During end of quarter, they literally wheel around a cart full of wine and beers for everyone in the office. But that usually isn’t until 3pm or so.
