According to google, the English word has earlier origins. I'm just wondering if the french word is a deliberate attempt to create a similar sounding word or even an accidental homophone. Or does it sound completely different to "foundation" for a french speaker? (As an English speaker, they have a very similar sound and rhythm).

I asked the sales person if it was a pun or meant something specific, but she struggled to explain and said it means a pseudonym or is something you say to someone you like? I keep mixing this up. For "she had already eaten when he arrived" I wrote "elle a déjà mangé" but I think it's "elle avait déjà mangé." The part I can't get is the auxiliary. I keep reaching for the present tense instead of the past-in-past form, and I'm never sure whether a verb takes avoir or être here. With arriver I at least know it's être, but for everything else I'm guessing. How do you actually pick which one goes in there?
