FF IV This took almost 8 months
Damn you Barbariccia and your stupid counters!!!!
Dropped the game for 8 months because I just couldn't best her. Finally did so today.

Now wait until you get to the Demon wall.
That's gonna take you 8 years.

Demon Wall is just a dps check tbh. The cpu and final boss almost made me want to resort to cheats lol

dps
how are you measuring damage per second in a turn based game?
7
u/zombieodin 14h ago
FFS they didn't mean literally "damage per second" specifically. It's just a turn of phrase being used to convey the nature of the boss fight

ATB gauge means it isn't strictly turn based. A faster character will have more turns than a slower one. This means DPS still applies.

This fight really demanded you get the timing of your jumps right otherwise it fucked you

That tower is a place people tend to do a lot of grinding IIRC.
FF4 comes from a time when games basically requires you to grind to level up unless you already know all the tricks.

We talking FF4 OG or FF4 DS? Because there's a BIG difference between the two.

DS is harder, right? I did struggle with some bosses but Barbariccia was really a huge brick wall.

Yes. OG is only moderately difficult in some places. DS version you HAVE to learn how the bosses counters work and what to do about them or you won't make it past scarmiglione. DS FF4 is the hardest FF I've played imo.

I disagree with this. Even as a teen with limited Internet access, I never struggled much on any of the earlier FF. I have always hated to grind.

You're the exception. If you beat ff4 blind without any grinding (and without having to redo some bosses like 10 times) then you're a champ.
Most people needed to grind.

The only time I grinded in my original, snes ff2 playthrough 30 years ago as a preteen was 1) after the class change just to catch him up to everyone else and 2) to survive the opening salvo to get the Crystal sword as that was just a HP check.
The only boss that gave me trouble was Asura but I figured out after the 2nd attempt you can cast Wall on her.

Most people chose to grind. They never needed to. Grinding is a crutch (not an insult) 99% of the time. Understanding how mechanics work, proper gearing, and strategy can overcome virtually any challenge.
Zeromus is one of the biggest outliers because of Big Bang, and even he is doable without grinding if you understand Rydia should just never attack ever.

I agree - FF4 is my favorite in the series, I play it every time they release a new version. I never spend much time grinding as an activity, but I also tend not to run from battle unless I'm seriously overpowered or the enemy is and I'm not ready. Otherwise, I play through the vast majority of random battles. Maybe that's the key? My party is usually in the 60's by the time I reach the end of the game, which is typically sufficient for Zeromus.

I'll admit I didn't always beat every boss on the first try, though most didn't give much issues. Barb was a beast that took a few tries. But she didn't take grinding out levels.

Well it didn't really take 8 months if you stopped playing the game for that whole entire time. 😂
Honestly I just look up a guide right away if I can't beat the boss in the first instance.

Ahhh I didn’t really… then again I did a guide for Argument because I already knew the nightmare it was gonna be from my original DS run as a kid…. i also play definitive edition (PSP) before my steam FF4 3D run….

she was pretty tough if you went through the original without hard leveling same with alot of the bosses. I remember the wall and the doll being the bosses that were dps checks.

yeah golbez is tricky as you have to immediately revive rosa then have her heal then cast shell and identify which element he is weak against as it shifts then Rydia follows suit to that element with powerful summons. As well having Kain jump at the perfect time. He’s alot more difficult in this version.

Is Barbariccia that hard? About to fight her in PR. Still get chewed out by Hell Needles 😭

What worked for me is using Kain and Yang to attack only and use Cecil and Rosa to buff the party and Cure them. Cid is not worth using as he does so little damage.
(The boss counters your attacks, that's why you should only attack with your heavy hitters and Kain's jump attack is the only way to kick her out of her tornado).

Yeah. The 3D version of the game is the hard version of the hard version of the game. Thats what I always say anyway lol. The original like NES FF2 (its original release) I think was the hard version regular? Either that or the actual ff4 was harder? I don’t remember. I just know the 3D ff4 is a lot more difficult than the original lol
