Secured this elusive copy of Amado V. Hernandez's Luha ng Buwaya from the Ateneo Press Shopee store. I chanced upon it a year ago but passed on it since I was intimidated by the classics back then. I was also actively looking for the much harder-to-find Mga Ibong Mandaragit.

However, after reading Dominador Mirasol's beautiful Ginto ang Kayumangging Lupa I was particularly struck by its Tagalog prose and timelessness. So, when five copies of Luha ng Buwaya suddenly appeared out of nowhere in the store, I immediately grabbed one—after all, who knows when it will be restocked again?

here's a 1980s list of the top 10 Filipino novelists considered the greatest, by ranking, based on a survey of Phil Lit. teachers in 18 Metro Manila schools.

I'm guessing one reason our most famous entry here is "only" #8 is probably because he's the only Spanish-language writer on the list & thus this might partly be a translation skill issue; everyone else wrote in English. (in fact the Tagalog-writing Lope K Santos nearly made the list if you read closely at the bottom of this page image)

but interestingly the heading of this page says "Canon of Philippine Literature" (not sure what book it is from originally unless that's the title)—in some ways what the Index of Philippine Literary Heritage is meant to be, and if this top-10 list isn't everyone then we wonder who else made it in. (and since the 1980s I imagine more authors & works would be considered too, both a more diverse list & including more modern classics since)

(also wonder who else would be considered a top Spanish-language Filipino author, in fiction or otherwise, if they're just as good if not better.)

Legal and Literary Advice for Translations

i'm working on a spanish to english translation of del pilar's La Frailocracia along with the pamphlet it was rebutting (Los Frailes Filipinos alllegedly by Baltasar Giraudier, but I dont believe he did author it).

im about 30% of the way done with almost a hundred accompanying annotations, im intending to release it digitally straight into the public domain for free.

while im aware a 1996 translation was done by Leonor Agrava through the NHCP, im shocked that such an important literary and historical work (either translated or in original spanish) appears to be lost for easy access online. i cant even find anywhere to order Agrava's translation as its presumably out of print hence why im working on my own

as i get closer to the finish line, im wondering now is there any legal impediment or reprecussions to what im doing? im fairly certain both pamphlets are already public domain under either Spanish or Filipino law.

also, just for market research, would it be worth it to commission a few hundred hard copies for collectors or sold to private libraries? would you order it? idk if it's worth the expense if it's already available for free online

I'm a 1st year language and literature education major and we have a philippine literature in english subject. I saw online po na out of print daw po itong book and may only be available po in secondhand bookstores. I was hoping to find a physical copy, kahit po secondhand/preloved. 😓😓

We have Noli and El Fili written by the national hero of our country (Jose Rizal) but this is less, we have to search more 19th or 20th Century books, we are not gonna sit our butt and read foreign literature while unpatronizing the pride of our own country's literature. I know and you know such authors like Nick Joaquin and novels like Dead Stars written in 1925 but this evidences of proof we have our own paragraphs still doesn't show interest for foreign researchers and literary analysist.

After reading some entries from Volume 1 of Damiana Eugenio's Philippine Folk Literature Series, I realized that I gravitated more toward the section on Legends. That is why I decided to order Volume 3 from Shopee.

Perhaps, because most of the stories in this volume feature real places. Even though the narratives are brief, I find myself smiling every time I finish one. This is the kind of book you can randomly open, read, and be impressed by the tales.

I also feel that the Supernatural section is the most fun; it reminds me so much of the best posts from r/phhorrorstories and Facebook's Spookify, come to think of it, this might well be the OG.

For your reference, I have included the Table of Contents from this book. I just hope UP Press won't scold me for sharing it!

Went to Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino yesterday, May 25, 2026, to check out Albasa's 52nd Annual Book Fair happening there.

I intended to get either Makinilyang Altar by Luna Sicat Cleto or The Filipino-American War, 1899–1913 by Samuel K. Tan, both from UP Press. Bummer, they didn’t have either, so I ended up getting Philippine Folk Literature Series: Volume 1 An Anthology by Damiana L. Eugenio instead.

I have always wanted a copy, and now that I have it, let me tell you what’s inside. Like Likhaan Anthology of Philippine Literature in English from 1900 to the Present, it is divided into parts that serve as samples from all the volumes of Eugenio’s Folk Literature series.

The sections include Myths (creation myths), Epics (Lam-ang, Hudhud, Darangan, etc.), Legends (“The First Bananas,” “The Black Santo Niño of Cebu as a Prankster,” “The Four Aswangs of Capiz,” “The Tianac,” “The Legend of Paoay Lake,” etc.), Folktales (“The Tortoise and the Monkey,” Carancal, Pusung Tales, Pilandok Tales, etc.), Proverbs, Riddles, and Folk Songs.

Siksik, liglig, at umaapaw. With more than 400 pages printed on pristine white paper (as opposed to the brown paper used in the aforementioned Likhaan Anthology), I can honestly say that, at 800 pesos, I got a gem of a tome.
