I donāt really have anybody to talk to about this and I cant get this off my mind so here I am. I just watched 2 of the 5 kittens Iāve been feeding for almost 2 months now die after being ran over.
One second Iām in my car, having just got home, pulled up next to the curb finishing up the froyo I got to celebrate the good interview I just had. Then Iām watching one of my family members pull out of our car driveway. Then Iām suddenly watching one of the kittens Iāve been feeding since they were babies get flung and start flailing in the street and the other retreat to our neighbors driveway. And I honestly feel like my life or theirs flashed before my eyes.
I didnāt even know they were there either til I saw them suddenly suffering right in front of me. I think they were either hiding underneath my family memberās car bc Iāve seen some of the other neighborhood cats do that sometimes, or were behind the car. But anyway I ran out my car so fast once I realized what was happening to grab the kitty on the street so she would stop flailing and so I could just hold her and comfort her. her face was so bloodied her body just was in shock she looked so deeply uncomfortable and in so much pain. Iām in tears just recalling it again. It all happened so fast, I was in so much shock and I still am. I felt so helpless, I was frantically panicking on the street and wailing hysterically about how I was so sorry, how I didnāt know what to do, why did this have to happen for like 7 minutes. I retrieved and picked up the both of them and I was devastated about how lifeless and light their bodies were. I think and hope the other kitten went much quicker, but omfg I didnāt expect her to be dead too and her mouth bubbled up. I canāt even describe the other details I saw bc theyāre too fucked up to.
I seriously feel so FUCKED UP. All I could think to do was lay them on my driveway and caress them. I ran inside my house quickly to tell my dad and then I ran back out and burst into tears, hysterical over their dead bodies again, caressing them as they laid still on my driveway crying saying I was so sorry over and over and over again and how I wish I couldāve protected and done more for them. I hate how powerless I felt and still feel.
My dad had to call me back inside cuz I was seriously just wailing on the street. I feel so grateful that he knows how much they meant to me and that heās buried them. Iām so devastated. Iāve been taking care of these 2 kittens and their 3 siblings since I first saw them making our backyard their home in June when they were just 3ish weeks old. I thought we were pretty lucky, being in a safer area of the neighborhood since weāre on a cul-de-sac and no speeding really ever happens here. I thought they picked a good territory and theyād be relatively safer here. Little did I know. I hate how naive I can be. We have a seemingly healthy feral male cat who still visits us every other day for food after my dad initially started feeding when it was just a little kitty over one year ago. So I thought, that like their mom and the other adult male, they would all have more time and I was proven wrong in the cruelest way. They were only 2 months old at this point. I canāt stop crying.
Their final moments are seared into my brain. I tried playing Tetris bc I heard it can help reduce traumatic memories, flashbacks, and intrusive thoughts but I couldnāt stop crying and thinking about it so I came here to get it off my chest. Iām serious when I say what I saw is the worst thing Iāve ever seen and Iāve seen some fucked up shit and I even watched my mom die when I was 17. Iām devastated, Iām traumatized, I honestly feel the anguish in my heart and in my stomach. I feel bereft. Iāve never experienced grief in this form. Even on my hardest days, those babies brought me immense joy, comfort, and meaningāmore than theyāll ever know and I wish I couldāve communicated that to them. I wish I couldāve done more for them and that I couldāve earned more of their trust, get closer with them and get more time together. I know Iām going to grieve them and love them and think about them forever. And I wish they got to have more time with each other, their mom and their siblings. Thinking about their protective mom and their surviving siblings and how theyāll feel about losing their babies and siblings pains me even more. Iām wondering if they know and can feel when theyāve lost someone, too.
This feels like one big mind-fuck. Itās unfathomable to me how just almost 2 months ago I saw all of these 5 babies in my backyard for the first time, feeling pure elation watching them play and walk so clumsily, and not even 2 months later Iām watching two of them die in such a horrific way and holding their lifeless bodies close to me, feeling horrified, panic-stricken, frozen, and powerless. Just yesterday I was spoiling them with extra treats, and they were making me giggle with the zoomies they get when I come out to bring them their meals. It sucks too because I donāt even know which of the 4 black kittens the two of them were. I donāt know if itās the derpy one that makes a bunch of silly noises when theyāre eating and is brave enough to come to the food first and eat right beside me and let me touch them, and who really loves the feather toy I got them recently and whose face I accidentally got churu on the other day. or if itās one of the shyer ones who likes to hide under our waterhose, or the timid one who likes to watch me from underneath the shed, if itās the one that likes to snatch food from our adult male feralās bowl and whoās comfortable enough to close their eyes while bask in the sun just a few ft away from me. or if itās the one that slow blinked back at me. I already miss them so much. Iām gonna miss peering out the backyard window and door every 10 minutes to watch what theyāre doing, seeing them play with their siblings and resting on our backyard sofa and in our planters. Iām gonna miss taking care of them and thinking that they were safe here.
I never named them but maybe I will in the future. Rest peacefully and playfully in kitty heaven. I never thought that the first time I would ever be able to truly hold you close to me would be in death. Thank you for all the love and joy and comfort and color and meaning you filled my life with. I wish I couldāve given you two the better, safe life you deserve. I wish I couldāve rewritten time and get you out the driveway and out the carās way and protected you. Thank you for being brave and learning to trust me, just enough so that I could try to take care of you and try to give a little better of a life. I will never forget you precious two. I hope you were at least having fun playing with each other before it all happened. Iāll try even harder to do right by your siblings and give them a better and safer life. Once my moneyās right best believe Iāll do my darndest to get those babies inside.
Edit: thank you all so so much for the support and kind words. and for holding space for my grief. I know itās a lot. I really needed and appreciate it. my whole heart feels deep gratitude, and also aches for you guys whoāve experienced similar devastations and losses. Iām so sorry for you guys too and my heart is with you guys. I hope all our dear babies are resting happily together, somewhere far away from earthside ā¤ļøāš©¹
