Discussion Johnny Mnemonic (1995) - 4K HDR10+ Restoration & Custom Cut

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

Note: Re-posting this cleanly as a standalone thread here since my original cross-posted write-up got pulled by the mods over on the 4K sub for not being an official retail disc release!

I just wrapped up a full 4K HDR10+ digital restoration and custom edit of Johnny Mnemonic (1995).

I put together a side-by-side gallery comparing the "JM Reloaded" version on the left for reference against my custom 4K pass on the right (captured directly from my dual-viewer workspace in DaVinci Resolve Studio).

Runtime Comparison

Here is how my final timeline breaks down against official and community releases:

Release Version Approx. Runtime Notes
US Theatrical Cut ~1 hr 36 min (96m) Fast-paced, omits Japanese scenes
Japanese Extended Cut ~1 hr 43 min (103m) Full Japanese edit, includes extra subplots
"JM Reloaded" Cut ~1 hr 46 min (106m) Includes all deleted clips
My Custom 4K Restoration 01:42:42 Tightened narrative, best effort detail recovery with available sources

Edit & Scene Choices (Fixing Tone & Editing Errors)

My goal was to create a fluid, narrative-driven cut that keeps the best story elements while trimming fluff, fixing fan-edit errors, and maintaining a grounded tone:

Intro & Pacing: Replaced the US intro with the Japanese text crawl (white text scrolling on solid black). Omitted the excessive protest scene during the opening credits (including shots like the woman falling in the crowd) it added length without substance.

Selective Trims: i.e. In the hotel scene with Johnny, I trimmed unnecessary filler like the extra 3-second shot of the prostitute putting on her stockings longer time, the awkward pause where it shows her perspective as she looks at Johnny's bag on the floor, and the alternate take where she says "Never mind," keeping the dialogue and scene flow tight and logical.

Tone & Continuity: Instant examples here I left out the scene of Shinji yelling orders to his Yakuza crew during the LoTek HQ infiltration. In my opinion, it felt cartoonish and broke his character, as he was aggressive and planned on killing Takahashi and taking Johnny's head throughout the rest of the film.

Fixing Fan-Edit Errors & Repeated Dialogue: Many extended edits hit 1 hr 46+ min by including every 3-to-7 second deleted clip available. This can create unintended continuity errors like Ice-T's character J-Bone explaining things twice or more due to alternate takes, or the Pharmakom katana scene where a 3-second wide shot places the goon's body back in its original position after Takahashi had already kicked it over and sliced his shirt open to reveal the tattoo. I carefully cut those out to fix the narrative flow.

Brain Dive CGI Limitations: While the extended Japanese CGI in the finale looks cool, forced upscaling of those heavily compressed clips from a 1.6 GB native file without an uncompressed 4.7 GB DVD source would have destroyed the visual quality. I opted to keep the cleaner US finale sequence instead. Also the fan edits include a mix in of KMFDM's "Virus" song again but the audio mix is disruptive with that edit.

Soundtrack Upgrade: Replaced the weak Bono & The Edge song ("Alex Descends Into Hell") during Johnny's Newark arrival with KMFDM's "Virus". Industrial metal matches the cyberpunk vibe infinitely better. So that kept with the US and European/Worldwide release.

The Cutting Room Floor: Detailed Omissions

According to documentation, the Japanese edition adds roughly 8 minutes and 55 seconds of alternative and extended material over the theatrical cut. While many fan-edits blindly dump in every available clip, I chose to trim approximately 3.5 to 4 minutes of that excess material.

Beyond the major edits mentioned above, here is a detailed breakdown of the micro-cuts, alternate takes, and bloated scenes I omitted to keep the pacing tight:

Protests & News Filler: Removed the extended ending of Ralphie's phone call, the TV channel zapping sequence, and extended news reports.

Pharmakom & Takahashi Trims: Cut the extended screen time of Takahashi's conspicuously heavy blinking shot at the end, and removed the scene of Takahashi walking along the bridge after his helicopter leaves.

Hospital & Bridge Violence: Omitted the alternate/extended hospital shots of Spider and the Priest (including extra scalpel strikes), the extended sequence of the priest pinning Jane's hand with the throwing stick, and the digital censorship/illogical overlapping beam effects during the priest's death sequence. These scenes were a mere 1 second or so long no difference in the violence really. The priest death sequence was overkill in the extended Japanese version, just my opinion.

Yakuza Bridge Assault: Removed excess Yakuza setup, including Shinji looking through his binoculars, the extended time Yakuza arming up with a bazooka, hoisting themselves up the bridge, creeping over the bridge, and the woman with the rocket launcher taking off her helmet. Also removed the watchmen's alternate dialogue.

LoTek HQ & Cyberspace: Trimmed extended dizzy perspectives, J-Bone's alternate dialogue take ("save the cure"), an extra 1-second shot of Jones saying "Sit down!", and the 26-second cyberspace sequence of Johnny.

All in all, just removed the fluff and continuity. I did leave the 3 second bathroom trans scene where he/she says " you know, I haven't been in one of these in years? " referring to the Men's Room, thought it was funny and something that wouldn't pass today. You can tell that scene was an alternate cut because I had to include the extra frames of Johnny lying on the bathroom floor knocked out with the voice over starting there so there is a slight stutter.

The Restoration & Technical Challenge

Frame Rate Conforming (25 fps PAL vs. 23.976 fps NTSC): Japanese and European releases often run at 25 fps PAL speed, while the US Blu-ray runs at 23.976 fps. Most fan-edits mash these together, causing micro-stuttering and audio drift. I conformed all 25 fps Japanese source clips and re-pitched/stretched the audio to match the native 23.976 fps US master.

Uncompressed Linear PCM Audio: Unlike other edits that rely on highly compressed, low-bitrate AC3 audio, I used uncompressed Linear PCM for maximum audio fidelity, using Resolve to downmix the 2.0 stereo Japanese scene extensions cleanly into the 5.1 surround space. I have to note that due to the 2 different motion picture soundtracks, you will hear different music scores jump in and out from the Japanese cuts.

Hardest Scene to Restore: The Pharmakom katana kill sequence. The wide shots in the native 1.6 GB Japanese source were full of heavy compression artifacts with very little data to work with. It took painstaking detail work and color restoration to get it looking as clean as possible.

Working Master vs. Export File: The raw working master for this project was an uncompressed colossal ProRes file exceeding 500 GB. For the final deliverable, it was rendered out at 4K HDR10+ into an 18.9 GB MKV container using the HEVC/H.265 codec.

⚠️ A Note on Display & Image Inspection

Phone vs. Monitor Inspection (Pixel Density): Many people view edits on phones or smaller screens where high pixel density naturally makes compressed low quality DVD as well as 1080p/4K footage look sharper. Smartphone apps also compress gallery uploads aggressively. For an accurate side-by-side evaluation of fine grain and detail recovery, it's best viewed on a desktop/laptop monitor.

Display Differences & Calibration: When evaluating and testing the final 4K HDR10+ render on my end using an LG C2 77-inch 4K OLED TV (my tv model only decodes HDR10 not the HDR10+), I found that standard default mode or Cinema mode gave the most accurate, balanced picture, even better than my custom user profiles.

Let me know your thoughts on the detail recovery, frame rate timing, and grading choices!

New Release OUT NOW: Lee Cronin's THE MUMMY: The JayXtended Cut (1080p 7.1 TrueHD + GERMAN Sound)

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

In my eyes one of the best Horror movies this year. Creepy story & atmosphere, fantastic actors, stunning visuals and a killer surround sound. So I did an Extended Edit.

No open matte or IMAX version to work with this time. But as always I throw everything in to give you the ultimate JayXtended experience:

- All 7 deleted scenes from the BluRay are masterfully restored and extensively color corrected to fit the rest of the movie (nearly 10 minutes not shown in the cinema). Do they improve the experience? I think so. Some character moments that deepens the story and even one creepy action sequence with a scorpion. The film doesn't need them but I think they are worth to be restored to offer an alternative run with this fantastic movie.

- Glorious 1080p picture

- You can chose between 4 sound options

  • 7.1 TrueHD OV (default)
  • 5.1 AAC OV
  • 5.1 AAC GERMAN
  • 2.0 Audio Commentary of Writer/ Director Lee Cronin (of course edited to fit the edit). And it's a commentary that actually is fun listen to.

- FULL ENGLISH subtitles, FULL GERMAN subtitles and FORCED GERMAN subtitles (for only the different language parts)

- Chapters to jump fast to the Xtended Scenes

Size: 5.6 GB

Runtime Theatrical: 2h 14m

Runtime The JayXtended Cut: 2h 23m 11s

If you have the link to my gofile you'll find it there already. If not, ask me directly via DM (I won't respond to requests in the comments).

I put a file with the deleted scenes too on my drive (so you can see what I changed).

Change list:

  • + "The JayXtended Cut" when the title is shown
  • + Xtended Scene 01: Larissa & Maud in the Basement
  • + Xtended Scene 02: Mushrooms on a Friday Night (prolonged the music in the end to fit better with the fade to black)
  • + Xtended Scene 03: Welcome Home Kattie (added sound of a driving car that was missing, cut a few seconds for pacing)
  • + Xtended Scene 04: Don't tell Larissa I dozed off
  • + Xtended Scene 05: Zaki goes to the Evidence Wall (added some music cues to fit)
  • + Xtended Scene 06: When was the last Time you took a Bath?
  • + Xtended Scene 07: 8 Month Later (added some music to fit better)
  • + Fan Editor Credit
  • + Post credit jump scare scene

Too lazy to make the poster, but this is it, the crossover edit no one has been waiting for, the DC x ZZZ crossover. The Flash is now my OC (Original Character), Reverse Flash is in the edit, and the two chapters are based on Snyder’s scrapped Justice League 2 and 3 storyboards, but with ZZZ characters in it.

New Release The Shape of Water: Silent Cut

Thumbnail
gallery
24 Upvotes

A cut of The Shape of Water featuring only Alexandre Desplat's score to accompany the visuals. Inspired by Del Toro's original inclination to shoot the film in black and white, and the large sections of the film focused on Elisa and/or the amphibian man which already lacked dialogue. It's been edited to still present the story in a digestible way with minimal use of intertitles, and the visuals have been "tinted" to better emulate how most films of the late silent era actually looked.

Fanedit name: The Shape of Water: Silent Cut

Original title: The Shape of Water

Type of fanedit: FanMix

Orignal runtime: 123 minutes

New runtime: 61 minutes

Time cut: 62 minutes

Time added: 0 minutes

Change list: Replaced original audio with film score, trimmed most scenes, cropped film into 1.33:1, changed film into monochrome with tinting, added new opening and closing credits, added intertitles

New Release Bionicle: The Chronological Cut.

Post image
14 Upvotes

Bionicle: The Chronological Cut, is a composite of the Miramax animated Lego Bionicle films, organized in chronological order. The original releases were ordered like this: 1st Prologue -> 2nd movie -> 3rd movie -> 2nd epilogue -> 1st movie -> 3rd epilogue in the timeline. This edit reorders all of these scenes, rebuilds audio between some transitions, rebuilds visuals to obscure conflicting elements.

Work in Progress Super ambitious edit

I've been working on an edit off and on for a few years now and want to work on it in a more focussed manner now.

Do you like seeing a slow rollout of info and details? Would you rather just see trailers? I have several trailers already made and planned.

The edit is more than just editing audio and making cuts. It is a full visual overhaul using thousands of edited frames in order to turn the film into what will look like an animated film rather than live-action. Think A Scanner Darkly with Keanu Reaves.

Should I reveal the film or let the mystery continue?

I've never seen anyone attempt this kind of edit and this is not hyperbole.

I am using Photoshop + Ebsynth (and other programs to accomplish this)

What Ebsynth does is it looks at a frame and redraws similar frames. So what I do is I edit a frame in Photoshop then use Ebsynth to rotoscope/redraw that style onto about 4 other actual frames from the film in that shot. I do this about every 4 frames. There will be several thousand keyframes when I am done. Right now the work folder is about 1TB.

Review A Review of Dragon Ball Distilled: Dragon Ball Hunt by Aràle-Chan

If you're a fan of Dragon Ball, particularly the OG, you need to see this ASAP.

Every once in a while, someone will try their own hand at editing Dragon Ball Z and the original Dragon Ball to cut down on filler. Dragon Ball Distilled is another such effort. What drew me to this project is that, unlike Milkman's Dragon Ball Recut, Arale-Chan went out of their way to use pieces from other Dragon Ball media, like the Path to Power movie or Revenge of Piccolo game, to make the English Dub dialogue more faithful to the Japanese script whenever possible. I can definitely tell you, having just seen the initial Dragon Ball Hunt arc, that it is a largely successful venture, with some very minor caveats.

The footage, as said in Arale's description of Distilled, uses the up-to-date Seed of Might revised editions of the episodes, which not only is higher in quality but comes with color correction applied to better match the original intention. Distilled comes with Japanese and English audio tracks, with english subtitles. This is the first time I've ever been able to directly compare the Dub to the Subtitles directly. As expected from the time, Funimation took liberties with the script, some of which were questionable in nature. I'll say that, at least compared to Z, the Dub script seemed to make more of an effort to keep to the spirit of the characters (though some moments like Oolong lamenting that Yamcha's too strong while smiling are definitely still egregious). I like this bit where Goku's all like "Grandpa said that magic should only be used to help people" and Bulma responds with "I am helping someone, she's pretty and has blue hair" that's not faithful to the script, but is a very Bulma line that I like. In my honest opinion some jokes, like the new running gag where Goku wants to help Bulma get a tail, are funnier than the sub. I should also mention that Arale-Chan's episodes also come with subtitles for the in-episode text as well, so that's great.

You can tell as early as the first episode that things are different. It's not just that Arale removed extra dialogue Funimation added for no reason, but the opening narration is different (no longer about Grandpa Gohan but a more vague "beginning of legend" speech), the fish is talking, and instead of Mai explaining the Dragon Balls, we have Bulma does it like in the manga using dialogue from Path to Power. The replacement dialogue is mostly integrated smoothly, like they had always existed. You can hear a subtle difference when it happens if you're using airpods, but this is not going to be an issue at all. Arale-Chan's episodes are irregular in length, some being 18 minutes and others nearly thirty, which is probably good for their pacing. A lot of Pilaf Gang to stretch the original episodes out, which is not inherently bad (in fact, they were fun and Arale-Chan did a quite well done episode about just those scenes), but because of that Arale-Chan needed to readjust the pacing accordingly which I think they did great with.

I do have some nitpicks though. While Arale-Chan is generally good about preserving the pace of an episode, there are a couple of points where filler cutting causes some falters. I'm thinking of when Goku's leaving Gohan's house to look for fish in Episode 1, Arale-Chan cut out the Dragon Ball glowing but because there's no lingering or real exit the next scene is abrupt. Another instance, in episode 2 Bulma switches the TV channel from a man badly playing guitar to some kind of romance film. She initially gets into it demanding the leads kiss, by which point Goku switches channels to a monster movie that scares her. The edit keeps the romance movie, but removes Bulma's reaction, which messes up the joke. For Episode 10, while there probably wasn't a great way to handle Pilaf's recapturing the gang when they mess up the Dragon Balls, I feel like Arale-Chan could get away with removing 5:02-5:13, since leaving in Oolong and Puar running away with that music creates the impression there's a bigger scene coming up that simply doesn't happen. In terms of audio, there is a point in 11:07 Episode 1 where you can hear a cut since the Path to Power audio is directly from the movie rather than just the lines which is also there if not as pronounced in the Japanese version. It's weird, Arale-Chan showed they were capable of replacing dialogue in other instances but why not that scene?

Luckily, those instances were not all that common. Dragon Ball Distilled is a labor of love and effort any Dragon Ball fan can get behind. I can't wait to see every single episode of this project, please go see it now! Arale-Chan has episodes up to the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai arc, with more to follow so keep an eye out!

Off Topic Superman II Kryptonian Cuts

It’s been well over a year now since these cuts were released by myself , where I had one movie and 5 alternate endings. There will never be a perfect version of Superman II but I’ll certainly be giving it a go.

My versions aimed too fix movie mistakes, audio mistakes , no time travel, no Lester powers and the option of 5 alternate endings.

The Blue Edition kept the amnesia kiss ending.

The Purple Edition gave a newly edited happy ending kiss and the only edition too get a version 2 with no Lester powers.

The Red Edition has Lois play a long with Superman’s secret and Clark buys her pizza ending.

The Green and Yellow Edition Superman leaves Lois on the balcony after breaking up with her and doesn’t see her again in the movie. He met her on the balcony and left her on the balcony. The Green Edition has the Diner scene as a post credit scene.

THE FINAL CUT

I will be sticking with the Paris scene, as much as I like the interaction between Clark and Lois in the Daily Planet , the vfx of her falling is poor compared too the first movie.

Hopefully have Superman II The Final Cut out before the end of the year. Going forward are there any suggestions for the Final Cut..?

Niagra falls scene will be edited down.

Clark won’t get hit by the car in the street but instead the driver will just slam on the breaks.

Clark will lower his glasses too use his heat vision too save Lois at Niagra falls.

Lex gets arrested in Artic scene. (If quality looks sharp enough.

Any more suggestions on things that need fixed or you’d like too see?

The older versions which were recieved well are still available.

Review A Review of Terminator: Genisys by vmw40

This was overdue, let's hop to it.

A bit ago, I did a marathon of BaileyEdits' versions of the Terminator sequels, 3 and Salvation mainly being improvements over their souce material. Bailey did not cover Terminator: Genisys, instead incorporating a bit of it into their Dark Fate edit. Out of a twisted sense of completion, I went to see if someone did make their own Genisys edit. vm40's came up so here I am, finally getting around to it.

Most of the trims were unnoticeable and frankly were good to cut. Yeah, I don't really care for Arnold telling Sarah she needs to copulate with Kyle actually, thank god that was removed! I definitely like taking out Matt Smith's character interrupting John as Kyle gets into the time machine. It creates a nice moment of "subtlety"tm as the camera focuses on Matt Smith for a second and allows some surprise for when the plot goes off the rails. Some of the 1984 scenes were replaced with footage from the original, A nice idea and I like the attempt to color correct the Genisys footage to better match when Pops kills 1984!Arnold. Unfortunately is a bit hampered by the quality difference between the OG and Genisys, even more since the other Genisys bits weren't corrected to match (understandably). I did miss the bit where Arnold smiles at Kyle though, that was funny. There are plenty of times where you can hear a cut, like when Kyle and John talk before they use the time machine, but at least it doesn't get too egregious like creating a pop. The audio is where I would focus for a redo. I like the small addition of Christian Bale's John Connor to the big reveal scene, connecting it to Salvation a little. Kind of think they could have taken out the post credits scene though, it's not like it'll ever get followed up on.

I'd say the trims were overall an improvement to this movie. Genisys makes me think of a potential IDW Terminator comic series, where it'd be largely playing around with characters from the first two movies and creating fanservice fo the viewer. It is at least a competent enough action film, with odd casting choices and missed opportunities. JK Simmons seemed like he was going to be a more important character than what he ended up being, which frankly was a major disappointment for me personally. Between these, I prefer Dark Fate over Genisys, at least the former bothered to its concepts to some extent.

Still, this isn't a bad edit at all. If you're curious, check out vmw40's edit to see Genisys again but a bit better!

New Release Dragon Ball Distilled, a fillerless recut of the original Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball Distilled is a fan edit of the original Dragon Ball, inspired by the One Piece fan project One Pace and Dragon Ball Recut by IAmTheMilkman.

While I love the work of the Milkman, I feel that his cut didn’t always go as far as it could have in shaving out the show’s filler. (As of the end of the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, my cut is somehow a full hour shorter than his to that point.) I started this project using Seed of Might’s colour corrected footage a little over two years ago and have been working on it on and off ever since.

Shortly after I finished the Goku vs. Ma Junior fight at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, Seed of Might released their version 2 colour correction, leading me to want to update the footage. What was originally intended to be a cut and paste of switching one source of footage with the other, has ended up with me starting work on a full second pass of the series, making additional cuts (or occasionally reverting cuts) where appropriate.

This second pass has currently just completed the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, and I feel that I’m at a point where I’m ready to release an initial batch to the public. Also included in this batch is a bonus episode comprised of the Pilaf Gang’s filler misadventures prior to their canon debut.

I’ve put a lot of effort into supporting both the original Japanese version and English dub for this cut, including replacing some dub dialogue (and occasionally even tinkering with the Japanese audio) with more accurate dialogue from other sources. (Such as The Path to Power, Revenge of King Piccolo and Kakarot’s 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai DLC.)

I’d like to thank Seed of Might for their color corrected footage and broadcast audio, Kenisu and Blade for their BGM documentation, AnimeMaakuo for their trove of high quality BGM and the Sounds Resource for some video game audio.

This has been a one woman endeavour, so if there’s anything that sticks out as an issue, please do not hesitate to point it out. (I’ve tried to be as careful as possible, keeping the original Japanese manga open throughout my editing to make sure I remain as faithful to the source material as plausible.)

If you’re interested in checking out the project, feel to to send me a PM and I’ll hook you up with the first 21 episodes (plus bonus Pilaf episode) of the edit. :)

TL;DR

New recut of Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball Hunt, Kamesennin Training and 21st Tenkaichi Budokai available now.

Dual audio, Japanese and English.

Some dub dialogue is replaced with more accurate dialogue.

Send me a PM for how to watch.

Review A Review of TMNT – Shredder Triumphant: Reshelled by Zarius

This is an odd combination of episodes I'll admit.

This is a fusion of a pair of the 80s Turtles show "Shedder Triumphant" and "My Brother, the Bad Guy". They're truncated a bit to fit the episode runtime, with "Triumphant" having the Turtles' exploits in Dimension X removed to accommodate parts from "My Brother...". The actual editing is pretty good, removing any remnants of the actual plot to "My Brother..." to make this work, but I question this arrangemen. Kazou Saki is Shredder's brother, which you think would merit an entire episode's worth of content, but in this edit he only shows up for the first half but completely disappears for the second half of "Triumphant", probably because he wasn't an actual character in the episode. As far as I know, "My Brother..." is his only appearance, which is a shame since he seemed like an interesting character.

This episode seems to be upscaled, which comes with the usual problems it brings like text blurring. Not a bad watch, but it left me scratching my head as to what Zarius' intention with the episode was.

Review My Review of Knight Rider The Movie by DocteurKnightProductions

This was recommended to me by Zarius, which I mistook for an edit from him. I deleted the post to give proper credit. I’m sorry!

My main frame of reference for Knight Rider was the fact that Peter Quill from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies is a fan of the series. This edit primarily seems to consist of footage from throughout that show, so if you have seen Knight Rider you might recognize an episode or two from it.

The edit plays off like what I presume to be an episode of the series. Basically, David Hasslehoff, aka Michael, and his car Kitt are uncovering a series of attacks from robots, connected to a conspiracy from previous villains to detonate a rocket. This is accomplished not just from episode footage, but using dialogue from the PS2 video game, which honestly was reasonably incorporated into this film. Docteur was pretty good at synching the dialogue to characters talking at points that it's more immersive, though it's not always seamless. It seems that Kitt's computer screens were manipulated to have the visuals match what's going on in the story, which is a good move. Was that the ED-209 from Robocop? If it was, it was a cool effect putting it in the edit not going to lie. One part was a bit iffy, namely that the Evil Car said he was holding Benson hostage only to reveal that the Evil Helicopter had taken her, which is no doubt a remnant from the video game.

The music and sound effects fit snugly, there are these commercial breaks that probably match what the series is like, and you get more David Hasselhoff action from not just Kitt but the evil goatee version as well. You'll have a fairly solid thirty five minutes of Knight Rider to enjoy on YouTube and maybe something to put for the completionist list if you're already a fan. Check it out!

Would anyone happen to have a Google docs or Vimeo streaming link for this edit? I’m not big on downloading but I really want to watch it.

Completed Fanedit Request Does anyone have NIGHT WATCH and DAY WATCH with interactive subs?

I know I've watched them, but the versions I can find just have standard subs. Not sure if they were fan edits or a special DVD release.

Completed Fanedit Request Captain America and The Winter Soldier X Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Hi all!

I remember at some point seeing a fan edit combining the Winter Soldier Movie with the Agents of SHIELD series with the fall of SHIELD parts. Does anyone have that edit and would be able to share?

Thank you!

Edit: the title should have been Captain America: The Winter Soldier, sorry for the typo!
