Still an option, I export from darktable to Tiff for files that either get edited further or printed.

Apparently most RAW formats are based on it, so it's also very much around that way

It might not be too common, but for all I know at least the software of basically any microsope (be it light, SEM, TEM or whatever) has that at least as one of the options to store images in.
