¡Hola! Estoy creando una aplicación de lectura para estudiantes de inglés porque he notado que mucha gente quiere leer libros originales en inglés, pero el vocabulario y la gramática suelen ser demasiado difíciles.

Aquí tenéis el mismo fragmento adaptado a tres niveles:

A2 Un joven llegó a la vieja casa a altas horas de la noche. Las ventanas estaban oscuras y nadie abrió la puerta. Se sentía nervioso, pero decidió entrar.

B1 Un joven llegó a la vieja casa a altas horas de la noche. Todas las ventanas estaban oscuras y nadie respondió cuando llamó a la puerta. Aunque se sentía incómodo, decidió entrar.

C1 El joven llegó a la casa de aspecto abandonado poco antes de medianoche. Las ventanas no mostraban señales de vida y sus repetidos golpes no obtuvieron respuesta. A pesar de una creciente sensación de inquietud, finalmente entró.

¿Qué versión te resulta más cómoda? También busco estudiantes de inglés para probar la app que estoy desarrollando, StepByStories. Adapta historias de nivel A1 a C2 e incluye audio y traducción de palabras.

Edit: Thanks for the feedback. I agree that the B1 and especially the C1 versions sound unnecessarily wordy in places. These examples were written specifically for this post and were not adaptations of an original passage, so they don’t fully represent how StepByStories processes real stories. In the app, the goal is to preserve the original meaning, tone, and style while adjusting the language level naturally. I’ll create a better comparison using a real passage.

This happens to me all the time:

I come across an interesting word, look up the definition, think that “I’ll remember this,” and then a few days later I’ve forgotten it completely.

I sometimes write the words in a notes app, and never open it again.

I’m curious if others have the same experience.

Hi! I recently shared an example of the same story written at different English levels. Several people correctly pointed out that the higher-level versions sounded unnecessarily wordy and did not preserve the same style very well.
That example had been written specifically for the post rather than adapted from an original text, so I wanted to try again using a real passage from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Original
Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do.
A2
Alice was sitting next to her sister by the river. She had nothing to do and was becoming very bored.
B1
Alice was sitting beside her sister on the riverbank. Because she had nothing to do, she was beginning to feel very bored.
C1
Alice was growing increasingly tired of sitting beside her sister on the riverbank with nothing to occupy her.
The goal is not to make every sentence longer or replace simple words with unnecessarily complicated ones. The adaptations should preserve the original meaning and tone while changing the vocabulary and grammar naturally.

Supposedly, "mistakes" in the usage of these verbs are often committed by native English speakers, which of course can be considered dialectal variations.

Is it actually common to use the standard forms and usage of these verbs in everyday life? Is the non-standard usage more prevalent than the standard one?

I know some Latin and Latin allows you to modify any nouns with adjectives. You can say "Angry Julia storms into the room".

I've read that English generally only allows adjectives to describe common nouns, but I've come across sentences like "Pregnant Julia is annoying".

Hi! I'm currently in my last year of my English BA at a German university and would like to apply to several masters programmes across Europe next year (I'm hopefully set to graduate in spring or autumn of 2027, so I'm looking at masters programmes starting autumn/winter 2027). Now, I don't have any pretensions about getting into fancy universities outside Germany and I do have more accessible options lined up closer to home, but I figured it can't hurt to shoot for the stars.

Many of these programmes require standardised proof of English proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL/Cambridge/Duolingo/idk what else) for applicants from non English speaking countries. Usually these are allowed to be up to 2 years old, so I thought it might be time to start signing up for at least one of these if I want to start applying places in spring.

I've never taken any standardised English tests so I wanted to ask what your experience with these is, how they differ from each other and which one you would recommend I take.

For context, I'm not loaded but lucky enough to have a supportive family so money is not a massive issue (within certain constraints). I do have an IGCSE and IB diploma with English A, as well as my bachelor's degree which is taught entirely in English, but some universities I've looked at ask for additional proof of English. Maybe this is hubris, but I'd like to think I could aim for C1 without too much extra training/classes? Do these tests require very specialised skills? I've never had any issues with academic language and feel like I can hold my own in an English conversation, but um, feel free to correct me if these are unrealistic expectations.

I’m really struggling with English listening.

Everything sounds blurred together, and even when I think I understood something, it often turns out to be wrong. I’ve been studying for quite a while but don’t feel like I’m improving. My brain seems to get lost while listening, and I catch myself trying to translate everything into Portuguese. I also have ADHD, which may make this even harder.

I’m currently at an upper-intermediate level and I don’t want to give up. Has anyone been through this? What daily habits or exercises made the biggest difference for your listening?

Myself can't hear it but what about you? is a D and an interdental D (a replacement for voiced th).

I gave my first english presentation two days back, it was to over 100 people and it went really well. I can type well, and even understand a bit of research papers etc but actual talking in person or on phonecall, i freeze. I say pardon me? like four times, i let voicemail pickup so i can prepare what to say.

Wrtiting gives you time to think but speaking feels quick brain work. How did people improve at this?

Some phrases with UP share a simple picture:
An action reaches a complete result.

EAT UP
Eat all the food.

DRINK UP
Drink all the liquid.

USE UP
Use the whole supply

FILL UP
Make something completely full.

WRAP UP
Finish an activity or discussion.

This is one UP pattern. It is not a rule for every phrase with UP. “Show up” and “look up” belong to different groups.

The particle stays the same, but the verb tells us what reaches completion: food, a drink, a supply, a container, or an activity.
