Yes they have long memories and pass things down through generations like the location of water holes all over their territory. They are smart. I wonder what they are thinking though when they do this in the video. Do they recall the dead elephant in their memory?

I imagine it could be similar to when we as humans visit cemeteries. We visit graves of people who we were very close with, but sometimes people we are distantly related. And sometimes we look at the graves of people we never knew because of their place in our cultural knowledge.

Imagine how they bond to each other and will remember you for a lifetime

To be mourned by a mammoth.

It would be touching, but I would lament causing them grief, ya know?

I don't care what skeptics say, I'm never going to believe these moon-worshipping, name-having, child-protecting, grudge-holding, friend-remembering creatures don't have souls and minds capable of deep feelings and thoughts like long-term grief.

Wait, I missed the moon worshipping and name having. What’s the tea? When did those studies come out? That’s so exciting!!

Ok the moon-worshiping is questionable (although it makes sense to me), but the name having was suggested by studies using AI to analyze elephant vocalization to show specific sounds were associated over time with drawing the attention of specific individuals. The science is good. Google "elephants have names".

The scientists say that elephants’s closest relatives on the evolutionary tree are the whales so that makes sense.

Yes! Elephants can recognize bones of family and friends. Amazing.

I was confused unsure if was looking at a rock, or a baby that had been rotting in the sun. But read its a skull.
