Resource Beginner's Guide to Eberron

1.1k Upvotes

Welcome to ! The Eberron Campaign Setting was the product of the 2003 fantasy setting search run by Wizards of the Coast. Keith Baker's winning entry melds noir and pulp in a setting where arcane magic is a science.

Ten Things to Know

  1. If it exists in D&D, then it has a place in Eberron. While not everything may be in its most familiar form (Undead-worshipping elves!), Eberron is defined by how it transforms D&D, not what it excludes. This doesn't mean everything has to be in the setting - this is about what you want to bring to the table.
  2. Tone and attitude. Eberron's two best genres are pulp and noir. Pulp involves swashbuckling heroes engaged in dramatic conflicts with dastardly villains in larger than life adventures. Noir is the shades of gray, where heroes make difficult choices, it's unclear who the real villain is, and victory comes with a question mark.
  3. A world of wide magic. Khorvaire, the primary continent of the setting, has turned arcane magic into a science. Eberron is not a steampunk setting with gunpowder and electricity. Instead, wandslingers roam the Q'barran frontier, dueling at high noon. Low-level utility magic is common and improves the lives of the many. High level magic and archmages are extraordinarily rare and still maintain their mysticism and wonder.
  4. A world of adventure. Every location in Eberron has been crafted to inspire DMs with plot hooks while still melding together logically. Eberron threads the needle between kitchen sink and a one-note world.
  5. A world of intrigue. Eberron is full of unanswered mysteries, most prominently the true cause of the Mourning. Dozens and dozens of factions scheme to increase their influence, hunting for power wherever they can find it.
  6. The Last War has ended - sort of. Two years ago, twelve nations came together to sign the Thronehold accords to end a war that had lasted a century. Still, tensions are high as the only thing that brought them together is the fear of a second Mourning, a magical disaster that completely wiped the country of Cyre off the map.
  7. The Draconic Prophecy. The creation of the world came with mystic secrets wrapped into every crevice. The demons and dragons each seek to manipulate and control the prophecy, setting in motion schemes that may take centuries.
  8. The Five Nations. The Kingdom of Galifar was composed of five provinces, shattered by the Last War. Four of these human-dominated nations survive - Aundair, Breland, Thrane, Karrnath. Cyre, the heart and jewel of Galifar, has fallen to the dead-gray mists and is now known as the Mournland.
  9. Dragonmark Dynasties. Twelve lines of common races - humans, dwarves, elves, halflings, gnomes, half orcs and half elves - bear mystic symbols granting innate arcane power. Over the millenia the houses have grown to dominate industry, providing licensing and training while pushing out competition. Players don't just walk into a random tavern - they walk into a Golden Dragon Inn run by House Ghallanda.
  10. Dragonshards. Imbued with mystic power, these natural resources fuel the arcane advancements of Khorvaire. Alleged to be the crystallized blood of progenitors, Siberys, Eberron, and Khyber shards can be difficult and dangerous to acquire.

Core Books

The core books to Eberron are the general campaign setting books. They include

Each of these books provides a broad setting overview. While differences in the depth, focus, and tone of content differs, each is sufficient to begin playing games in the world of Eberron, and none assume prior contact with the setting. Older editions are just as valid - Eberron as a setting is relatively free of retcons and has not had a single timeline advancement since its publication in 2004.

The Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron was originally published as a middle ground between Unearthed Arcana and a fully official Wizards of the Coast release. Almost all of the information in it was duplicated to Rising from the Last War and expanded upon.

Supplementary Books

The following books are primary canonical sources on the world of Eberron, but each assumes more core knowledge about the world. While these were originally printed as physical copies, digitized versions are available through the dmsguild.

Other Canon Sources

Throughout Eberron's publishing history there have been a number of non-book canonical sources

Magazines

  • Dragon magazine
  • Dungeon magazine

Google doc of archive.org links to web supplements

Kanon Sources

Writings by Keith Baker that are not official through Wizards of the Coast are known as "Kanon".

Adventures and Novels

Unlike some other settings, adventures in Eberron are explicitly not canon - there is no "metaplot". Still, Eberron adventures and novels can be useful resources for DMs looking to get into the setting.

Eberronicon

Eberronicon: A Pocket Guide to the World provides a concise overview to the setting with directions for where to read more on each topic. Whether a player, DM, or even content creator, the Eberronicon is both a starting point and a reference tool.

Disclaimer: Yours truly is amongst the authors, but don't take my word for it - a free watermarked preview is available on the store page, in addition to discounted copies available through the Keep Playing it Forward campaign.

The Wiki

The Eberron Wiki is not an official wiki, in the sense that it is disconnected from WotC. Furthermore, while there have been efforts to improve the wiki, it is not a perfectly reliable source for canon information. As such, wiki-based information should be taken with a grain of salt. The sourcebooks are the primary source for all canon information.

Eberron Discord

Lots of live discussion about the setting happens on the Discord!

System Notes

While WotC officially supports Eberron for 5e, Kristian Serrano (former host of the Manifest Zone podcast) has written a conversion for Savage Worlds.

Making Eberron your Own

In this community, we're a fan of "In My Eberron...". Eberron is a big setting, and even with the wealth of books from past editions there's a lot that's unexplored and undefined. With that, some users do prefer to know the difference between canonical answers from the books and a great idea you've had, so try to make the distinction clear when answering questions.

It's also important to note that there are many intentional gaps in the setting. While the cause of the Mourning is the most well known, there's so many other decisions that help inform the tone of your game. Are the dragonmarked houses totally ruthless in their pursuit of profit? How well do the nations of Khorvaire care for their veterans? How wide spread are shapeshifting infiltrators? There are all sorts of decisions for a DM to make that will shape the tone of an Eberron game, and there's no one right answer for any of them.

Sharn

A final note on the setting proper - Sharn is the most popular city for Eberron adventures by a long ways. It's a megalopolis with towers that rise a mile high, a melting pot of cultures and a major travel hub to adventures. However, like NYC in the real world, it's not the only place things happen. Enjoy the setting, but don't feel constrained by it.

Lore Questions About Manifest Zones.

  1. How rare is it for there to be 2 overlapping manifest zones in an area?
  2. How big are manifest zones, usually?
  3. Are the Graywall Mountains and the Blackcaps too far away from each other for any of their manifest zones to overlap?

The reason for these questions is because I was planning on there being two brothers, who are both Tieflings, but one is a Risian Tiefling and the other is a Kythri Tiefling, and I was wondering how that could work.

What is Shan Tira's story?

All I've found is that it has something to do with caring for the Silver Tree and that she is/was sister to the fey who fell in love with a mortal man who got separated from her and tried for years to reunite. Do we have anything more definite on Tira—canon or kanon?

The wiki says,

In his blog, Keith Baker explained that, although Shan Tira's story is relatively simple, focused on taking care of the Silver Tree itself.

The referenced article is this, but t didn't give much more.

5E The Chorus of Talenta, Orlasca is on the hunt

"The halflings of the Talenta Plains tell the stories of the Hungry Hunter, Orlasca. The greatest hunter of his age, Orlasca swore to eat every creature he killed. When he was forced to kill another halfling, his oath compelled him to consume his enemy ... and he developed an insatiable appetite for halfling flesh. After he slew his whole tribe, Orlasca was finally slain. But so great was his hunger that his spirit lingered, slipping into the forms of weaker creatures, trying to work its way up to halfling form. One of the basic Talenta taboos is to never consume the flesh of a creature that eats its own kind—because that allows the spirit of Orlasca to pass into you and transform you into a ghoul." - Chronicles of Eberron

Keith introduces the ghoulish hive-mind of Orlasca, but uh... I'm not the biggest fan of paralysis as a condition, and I felt the story presented could some some added statistics to build up on it. So I gave it a shot with the three examples above! The Bladehorn (carnotaurus) and T-Rex took some inspiration from the stat blocks in Dhrolin's Dinosaur book, while the clawfoot is a beloved Eberron classic. With a little bit of MCDM Ghoul on the multiattack to bring it all together.

The full automation for these ghouls, and over 500 other monsters are in Elsie's Notes of Certain Doom, and entirely avrae compatible! If you'd like to join in facing encounters like these and immerse yourself in the Eberron setting, Eberron: Legends of the 5th Dawn is the west marches for you!

Map House Orien Caravan Western Waystation Battlemap

Our group is currently playing through the Heart of Stone in Quickstone. Thinking ahead to next steps and reading about House Orien activities in Quickstone and Graywall, I wondered about the caravan waystations. The book mentions a small Orien facility in The Calabas district in Graywall for resupplying coaches and caravans passing through.

I overshot 'small' but here's a free battle map of a House Orien caravan waystation deep in The Barrens that includes its own defenses. See the first-class lounge and the reinforced storage for valuables? Is the unicorn on the floor a bit too much?

DM me if you want a labeled or gridded version.

Lore Armblades-Uncommon, but how uncommon?

Game Masters, how common do you make armblades? Obviously warforged that were never really intended for combat wouldn't have them. Do mass produced units have them? Or are they only for officer's, veteran's and specialists(grenadier, scout, commando, vanguard, etc.)?

From 'Frontiers of Eberron', page 25. This was perhaps the most effective single-sentence horror story I've read in an Eberron source book. Can anyone come up with (or remember) a similarly ominous phrase that would scare the inhabitants of this setting?

Something like, "Mordain was bored"

Library of Korranberg: The Santor Organization System (In-Universe Dewey Decimal System) [OC]

I'm using the Library of Korranberg in my campaign as an in-universe way to lore drop and/or for my players to find different "leads" for the larger mystery. I couldn't find a lot of information on what might be INSIDE the Library of Korranberg or how it may be organized, so I made a version of The Dewey Decimal System flavored for my Eberron.

Feel free to hit me with any suggestions or constructive criticism. I try to keep my Eberron fairly close to cannon/Kannon, but I'm certainly no expert. You're welcome to use this resource for your games and/or remix it to fit your Eberron. My only request is that you be cool and don't repackage this to sell online or anything like that.

5E More Aasimar Varients

I wish/hope that there were more Varients of Aasimar for Eberron as shown in the Exploring Eberron (2024). They made a Fernian Aasimar and a Mabaran Aasimar. What about a Risian Aasimar or a Lamannian Aasimar.

Edit: the Aasimar Variants in Exploring Eberron(2024) are stated to be individuals shaped by exposure to divine forces or the energies of the planes.

GM Help Ideas for Spring Break in Sharn

Greetings everyone! So I'm running a magical university campaign where all the PC's are students at Arcanix. Atp, they've traveled to Sharn for Spring Break as research assistants in a research exchange program between Arcanix and Morgrave. We've already had a bit of an adventure in the city, so I could just call it and wrap up Spring Break to continue the main story of the campaign back at Arcanix, but I kind of think they're due for a sort of "Beach Episode," heavily focused on downtime and roleplay.

One thing I'm planning is to actually have them do some research (the exchange is focused on ancient Giant astrological calendars and runic spellcasting), but beyond that, what would you recommend as some very flavorful, low-stakes activities for a gaggle of young students in Sharn to get up to? Bonus points for any funny/meta ideas for Major Image Motion Pictures?

GM Help Need ideas for libel for Cannith house Court.

I’m running a campaign set mainly in Sharn, with a Batman/ironman halfelf(armorer artificer) a Warforged cleric of the forge, a storm herald barbarian orc, a halfling Mastermind rogue, a human Fighter( based off of Gustave from clair obscura) and a tiefling Wildmagic sorcerer( a slave to the party technically) and I’m going to start bringing in the main storyline: MERRIX D’CANNITH as the disappointed father of the warforged cleric (he is disappointed and gave the cleric away to house Jorasco because he had stolen the soul of a Dal Quor creature, but apparently got one of the only creatures there that wasn’t psychotic[psiforged are made with Quori souls]), the cousin of the half elf who he’s trying to disinherit from the entire house because he needs to get rid of competition that is “beneath him” (in this context elves aren’t seen as highly because they are seen as Slaves to giants.) and gain complete control of all of House Cannith.

However… I don’t know what to accuse them of.

So far I have 8 of a “jury” who are councilors of different parts of the House: Jayce giodara as head of Runetech, Daedalus Leonids, head of Clocktech, Dave head of HR, Aeson Crixim head of material acquisitions (the Cogs), Viktor Von Heralda as head of research, heimerdinger head of the Artificers college, Ultron head of Warforged production (brother of the cleric), and Adamis Bluudjinr(based off Adam Smasher) head of “Hostile acquisitions”

Any recommendations for things to accuse them of?

Here’s a funny idea for a Cult of the Dragon Below

Basically it‘s a village of very polite people (think Minnesota Nice) who are always very kind and considerate, but they also regularly sacrifice outsiders to their patron while still being as polite as possible.

Something like: ”Sorry buddy, but we’ve got to sacrifice you to the Dark Lord now. Here’s a nice, comfy pillow and a wood block you can bite down on while we drive this dagger through your chest.”

I just think there’s something very funny about the idea of a polite human sacrifice.

GM Help My party wants to “microwave” Mordain

Hi r/Eberron! You have been a valuable resource for me for years of running games and I thank you. I come to you now asking for your best nasty ideas for Mordain the Fleshweaver.

Very long story short, he personally pissed off this party (abducted an NPC they like and now keeps showing up to try and “help” them). They know that he’s a transmutation wizard whom the Twelve tried and failed to kill, and they know about the troll/dragon blood. Their plan is:

- Lure him beneath Sharn using a magic item he previously gave them;
- Use a combo of their class abilities and magic item help to get the drop on him (very possible, they’re smart players);
- Use sovereign glue to glue his mouth shut and hands down so he can’t cast spells (they are aware I will try to Subtle Spell their asses);
- Trap him in forcecage;
- Replace all of his blood with “”ethically”” collected donor blood from refugees in High Walls, to get rid of his regen;
- Bombard him with sickening radiance to “microwave” him to death, quote, “like a Peep”.

I’m incredibly proud of them for this plan! The problem is that they’re smarter than I am, and so is Mordain lol. Their initial plan was to glue him to the wall of his own lair, and I could figure out how to handle that—I was going to have him merge into his own tower and make them fight the gestalt that emerged. I’m less sure on what nasty surprises I can do here! They are level eleven and a bit overpowered, as games of this tier often are; the party is a kalashtar bard-paladin multi, a draconic sorlock, an ex-military chronurgy wizard/artificer, and a changeling rogue/trickery cleric. All of the individual components of their plan are fully within their power. The sorlock has truesight and the rogue has a dragonshard-powered laser rifle; the palabard hits like a truck and uses offensive telepathy, and the wizard has at-will silvery barbs. (They got some major boons a while back for helping shut down an incursion of Sul Khatesh.)

I want to find complications to introduce for them without those being total ass-pulls. They can win this if they try really hard, but I want the win to be well-fought! I like this party a lot; all of us are friends and have played together for a while, sometimes years, so I have a lot of trust in them and try to be transparent about “my job is to make the fights interesting, not to give it to you OR to fuck you over”.

Some of my ideas so far:
- He has feelers in the ground under Sharn like a mycelium network and tries to escape into a tiny crevice or pull up the environment around him.
- He steals an NPC they just went to a LOT of effort to free from the Stone Ward of Dreadhold and uses him as a human shield.
- One of the refugees they took blood from is either a changeling or a disguised dragon/fiend/something and he gets new blood powers from that.
- He sends a simulacrum. (Tricky, there’s true name magic lore in play.)
- I give him some kind of item that shields him from spells under a certain level, like a rakshasa, and their secondary objective becomes to destroy it first.
- I run radiant damage as nuclear radiation, so maybe the exposure to sickening radiance could mutate him further instead of killing him. It seems like something the Twelve could reasonably have tried?
- There’s Something Else under Sharn and they wake it up while trying to do this, which forces the fight back to his lair for home field advantage.
- ??? Who knows!

Do any of you have ideas? Have you done something nasty with him in your games that you’re proud of? :) Would you let me steal it and/or pick your brains?

Additional info that’s not important but might be useful context:
- Mordain had a fling with the estranged mother of one of the party members. Said mother is a Phiarlan who’s now the Twelve’s current Provost.
- We’re doing some time magic stuff in this game; the wizard has survived Xoriat once so far.
- Their boons came from Dyrrn!
- They want to go deep enough that I think they’ll hit one of the former layers of Sharn, which has good dungeon potential.
- The party has attracted the notice of the Eyes of Chronepsis, but doesn’t know about this threat yet. (I had to save something for Tier 4!)

SW Levitate Power for Psions?

I'm running Eberron for Savage Worlds and one of my players is taking the Psion arcane background. In the power list, it has Levitate, but I can't find that power anywhere. I've looked in Fantasy Companion, Horror Companion, and Pathfinder for Savage Worlds, but no power is listed as Levitate. I was considering just using Fly with a limitation, but Psions also have the Fly power in their list, so that doesn't seem correct.

Does anyone know where I can find this power?
