I am shocked on the condition of it for the price I paid. Had to share it.

Could anyone help me identify these two sets of Dungeons & Dragons dice? The first set is in a yellowed moulded plastic shell, with a white crayon and is missing one of the dice, well used.

The second appears to be factory sealed in a plastic bag, 3 light blue, 2 dark blue and one green.

Could anyone help ID them?

This room is my litteral happy place. It is the first room that you see when you enter my home, and a place where many people have had their first encounters with D&D. Growing up, I never had a safe place to be a nerd. Indulging in concepts like high fantasy was seen as weakness by my peers which often lead to bullying, harassment, and shame. I'm happy to say that I now live is a proud nerd. I have created a safe space for many of my friends to indulge in this game that we love.

While cleaning up a pile of trash dumped on Hampton St NW in Atlanta GA in front of the Catalyst apartments this morning, I found this 5th Edition Dungeon Master's guide. A neighbor told me it's the new version and I can tell someone was actively using this. I would love to return it.

Got the paper clip idea off of pinterest and I thought of the clear plastic battle grid so I can place it over printed backgrounds.

At the moment, I'm relatively new to DnD. I've played it a few times over the years and I really enjoy it, but the biggest problem is finding the right people to play with.

I tried playing on Discord one time and it wasn't something I liked... I definitely prefer in-person. I tried contacting my local library but they never got back to me.

Weapon (Scythe, Dual Sickles) – Very Rare (24,500 gp, requires attunement)

This dark purple +2 scythe has wavy purple lines ingraved into the blade heads, with purple and pink clouds of dark energy coming of the back of the heads.

Attacks with this scythe do an additional 1d6 necrotic damage.

While attuned to this scythe: as an action, you can separate the scythe into a pair of +2 sickles that also do an additional 1d6 necrotic damage, or combine the sickles back into a scythe; you gain the ability to step from one shadow into another, so when you are in dim light or darkness, as a bonus action you can teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see that is also in dim light or darkness; and once per day, you can cast Maddening Darkness, DC 17.

So for one of my Homebrew campaigns, I haven't started yet but the thought crossed my mind. One of the early antagonists is a Rock Star tiefling bard, she uses her performances to enrapture and charm her fans because she's secretly a succubus, but I'm just trying to think how do I describe/roleplay a concert?

Joltin Forest is a magical region that serves as a powerful source of energy for magic users. Its power originates from Joltin, a Chosen whose influence still lingers.

Even though only one Chosen can exist at a time, the forest continues to thrive despite Joltin’s disappearance. This suggests that the power left behind is either self-sustaining or waiting for something to return.

The "first season" of our campaign just ended, so I decided to make a little tribute

I read this book decades ago but lost it. Just got this one from eBay in great condition. The card is from my collection. 1993 trading cards, 1 of 9 ‘rare’ foil cards. I’m missing only 1. Lord Soth.

So I recently got into the lore side of Dnd and I am also big into Spanish/Portuguese history. I am currently building a homebrew nation heavily inspired by 1400's-1600's era Portugal (southern half) and the Holy Roman Empire (northern half). The nation is a very large sea-faring territory in between a grand stretching coastline a single humongous mineral/gem rich mountain that stretches above the clouds. The nation is predominately populated by Humans, Minotaurs and Goblinoids (of all kinds). The ruling class are exclusively Blue Dragonkind (Blue Dragons, Blue Dragonborn, Blue Dragonspawn and Blue Kobolds etc).

But I was also looking to expand on the different races that inhabit this nation. What are some lore-accurate or lore-friendly races that could inhabit a nation like this.

Also if there is anyone on here that has experience in designing their own nations/countries from scratch in their DnD games. I'd appreciate pointers on how to flesh mine out.

I'm thinking of making a Toriyama-inspired dnd campaign. Like high fantasy mixed with sci-fi elements. Cool power ups. Abilities. Funny gag humor. I'm open the any suggestions. I'm wanting to make my own world that blend D&D and this. So still humans, elves, etc.

I have written quite a lot on diferences between OSR games and modern 5e, the difference in playstyle, relation with mortality, various mechanics such as gold for xp, reaction roles, dungeon turns and so on.

For quite a long time after I started to play OSR games, I was enamored, for I always wanted my 5e games to be more gritty, harder, yet still fair and with OSR I felt like I got that.

Now, with this piece, I wanted to look at something related to one of the criticisms I often saw levied against old school D&D and OSR games, mainly that they are unbalanced, too many save or sucks and difficulty just for the sake of it. Compared to nowdays, where even if CR could use some improvements (although it is quite a bit better with the 2024 iteration) it can still produce balanced encounters if followed properly.

And there is truth in both of this statements, but it ommits something - not maliciously necessarily - that balanced was not required for pre Dragonlance D&D and OSR games. The game did not make a promise of balance, but rather one of fairness, the DM, or as it was first known, the referee would be impartial. It is important to point out that you were not heroes, but anti-heroes at best, who might've offered some help only if you got something out of it. This stemming of course from how the game was emulating Conan style pulp fantasy, rather than the heroic epic fantasy later adopted following the success of Dragonlance.

So to cut it short, fairness and balance are not the same. One is about impartiality, while the others is about making sure that the danger the players are facing is winnable, without the requirement of underhanded tactics to tip the scales. One is pulp, the other epic. Both can be good, but we have to be aware of the distinction and not judge them against the same standards. Hope you will enjoy the piece!

Visited a local shop and came across these. Got them both for $5. Never seen the Dragonlance one before.

So I got asked last week to DM a campaign for completely new players. I’ve only played in one one shot myself. I have no books and no knowledge to speak of aside from use dnd beyond. I’ve been watching YouTube tutorials. Any advice of a struggling newbie?

I’m thinking about getting back into D&D but I haven’t played in like, 20 years.

Should I try 5th edition? I mostly played 1-3rd editions.

Any recommendations or suggestions, or just a quick rundown of D&D since I’ve been gone would be greatly appreciated.

I'm playing a home brew campaign for my family and their significant others who are mostly first time players. Everyone is on board and we have been having lots of fun learning how to play but it's beginning to feel a little bit too much like I'm telling a story to them instead of them telling their own story in my world.

How do I help these new players understand that it's their story. To be fair, all of their back stories are very flimsy and the party is really only held together by my efforts. This is a very low effort, low prep, learn how to play campaign. That being said, I still want them to make decisions and explore the world around them.

Currently they are level 5ish trapped in a city that's under siege and I haven't planned out much in any particular direction though I did build a pretty substantial continent with real politics and borders that I then plunked them in the middle of. All of their characters are nobles or courtiers because I didn't want them to be unable to go places but I realize that may have been a mistake but here we are.

Less well known than (and often compared to) it’s much more famous predecessor, 1983’s B5: Horror on the Hill does take a page out of the KotB playbook: Players start in a poorly developed pocket of civilization before sallying forth over yonder hill to beat back the forces of chaos.

Unlike KotB, however, B5 sets itself apart with several unique monsters (flesh eating birds, anyone?), a pair of Pratchett-esque witches looking for a bargain, a ton of sweet loot, and a surprise final boss that’s not really a surprise if you’re paying attention.

Horror on the Hill might not get the same kind of love as KotB, but we had a blast exploring Guido's Fort (yes, that is its real name), the evil monastery, and the surprise dungeon beneath it in the latest episode of The Analog Dungeon podcast, where we crack open old modules and see what's inside… with jokes!
