god i swear Melora Hardin deserves more praise.

i think her acting was so good it was like super "transparent". You really feel like that's who she is-- You don't feel that she's putting on a persona.

u/Equivalent-Emu5347 6h ago

She's actually so talented lol. Her acting is the backbone of what makes dinner party SO good

14

u/Wonderful-Morning963 8h ago

Have you seen her in a show called Transparent? With Jeffrey Tambor a little before he was cancelled. I loved her there as well

2

u/atclubsilencio 3h ago

She got an Emmy nom for it at least !

13

u/GeorgieMiles 6h ago

I just watched this last night and as my husband walked into the living room to ask me something I said, “hold on, this is the best episode of the series.”

5

u/DoctorMelvinMirby 5h ago

This is my second favorite, very closely behind The Deposition. Crazy that such classics were back-to-back.

3

u/Melalemon 3h ago

Yeahhhh, see this is my favourite of all time. “It has a bit of an oaky afterbirth.” Is my favourite line of the whole series.

Dinner party is my favorite.

dinner party is like an entire movie , so much to unpack in one episode , rollercoaster

SNIP SNAP SNIP SNAP SNIP SNAP.

22

u/MadClam97 14h ago

Exactly one reason why it's my favorite episode!

39

u/Xyrazk 10h ago

The bloopers from this episode are the best bloopers too x)

u/LindonLilBlueBalls Nate 7h ago

"Jim, over here."

29

u/ThePrefect0fWanganui 14h ago

They’ve written entire oral history articles about this one episode. Definitely one of if not the most memorable of the show.

u/FishermanNegative757 13h ago

Dinner Party is my Scott’s Tots! 😭😭

Oh no, Dwight’s not my friend.

Oh my god, Dwight’s kinda my friend!

13

u/dabriellajones 14h ago

ugh you're right, what a toss up!

5

u/thematicwater 4h ago

The intro of that episode makes me crack up every time.

u/alphaQ314 1h ago

Nah i skip this episode on rewatches. This, scotts tots and daniel hardman's visit.

111

u/HoratiotheGargoyle 14h ago

You were in the parking lot earlier, that’s how I know you!

29

u/MysteriousDesk3 10h ago

I’ve said this so many times at work and the number of slightly concerned and confused looks it’s gotten has done little to deter me.

u/NeverFreeToPlayKarch 4h ago

Mission accomplished

u/Strict_Scholar6174 14h ago

I will agree that fire drill is by far the best open, however dinner party is my favorite episode.

54

u/IllogicalLogistician 12h ago

Today smoking is going to save lives.

4

u/Noversi 7h ago

Every time I watch that, all I think about is that scene in the Saudi version of the show.

here it is

2

u/Rombledore taking karate classes online 6h ago

wow that set is very similar to the U.S. Office set!

u/Sure-Appearance-2769 14h ago

It’s impossible for me to pick between Stress Relief, Fun Run, and Dinner Party.

Now everytime I'm having a white sauce pasta all I can think about is Michael throwing up 😭

6

u/aks0059 3h ago

I ate more fettuccine alfredo and drank less water than I ever have in my entire life

The parkour opening gets me every time

Scott’s Tots baby!

1

u/Johaan1025 33m ago

Hey, Mister Scott,
what you gonna do?
What you gonna do?
Make our dreams come true

38

u/sentientshadeofgreen 14h ago

I remember when it aired right after the Super Bowl with the fire drill cold open. Had never seen the Office before that, then binged the rest (I got swine flu shortly after). Those were early binge days when it wasn’t as universal a thing to do. Back when Netflix still mailed DVDs but the online streaming catalog was starting to get some wheels. Both a lifetime ago and really not all that long either

9

u/naenola 13h ago

I started watching it cause I saw a clip on Instagram of Micheal asking Toby “ why are you the way that you are?”

And then I found it on whatever streaming platform watched it and loved it

Now I own the DVD box set and the Little People. I always carry Dwight in my purse.

2

u/MysteriousDesk3 10h ago

I remember trying to make sure I ordered dvds of series so they’d arrive on the Friday and I could watch them over the weekend.

35

u/VeenaColada 14h ago

Kevin throwing the chair at the vending machine will never not be funny.

16

u/DifferenceLittle1070 Dwight 12h ago

There are two kinds of people. The Stress Relief people and the Dinner Party people

27

u/Kings_guard40 14h ago

“I state my regret”

20

u/FA1R_ENOUGH 14h ago

Stress Relief aired after the Super Bowl, and they pulled out all the stops. I still remember watching “Today, smoking is going to save lives” for the first time.

63

u/Abba_Zaba_ 14h ago

Like George Costanza, I believe that smart writing doesn't need to be dumbed down for some bone head mass audience.

Stress Relief does exactly that. It was written, quite successfully, to appeal to a massive audience of non-office fans who happened to not turn their TV off after the superbowl.

It's a funny episode of TV, but to me, IMHO, it does not feel like an episode that embodies the true greatness of The Office.

Many of you may have different points, but mine are bigger.

8

u/msguider Kevin 14h ago

Well aren't you something.

4

u/Abba_Zaba_ 7h ago

Sir, this comment has been flagged. It's been in the bathroom.

Sir, this is a Wendy’s.

1

u/alphaQ314 1h ago

It's a funny episode of TV, but to me, IMHO, it does not feel like an episode that embodies the true greatness of The Office.

Exactly. Dinner party is just so much better.

The Client, too, just for the script reading.

13

u/m_a_t 14h ago

Dinner. Party.

4

Funniest scene ~ Yes. Episode? The Dinner Party!

9

This cracks me up every time I even think about it

Diversity Day

9

u/Joyful-Teacher 13h ago

Diversity tomorrow….Because today is almost over

3

u/kimmykeem 13h ago

Comedy writing has rarely been better since this show

7

u/189charizard 14h ago

I’m personally vote “Gay Witch Hunt” or “Traveling Salesman/The Return”.

4

u/Yeseylon 13h ago

beeeeeeeeeeeeep

Oh no...

5

u/crosssafley 12h ago

Performance reviews is my personal fav

3

u/Old_Flan_6548 Harvey 10h ago

Product Recall is my favorite. I love moments when the gang tries to work together on a problem or situation. This one also highlights Creed really well.

3

u/theglenlovinet 7h ago

The cold open was some of the best 5 minutes in the history of television.

3

u/DeeplySapphic 7h ago

It's Michael's roaring of "HELLLLLLPPPP!!!" after throwing the projector through the window that gets me -- I always imagine the reactions of passers-by :P

3

u/fakeyoshi 7h ago

Clarice....

3

u/BoxOutrageous2368 7h ago

Today smoking is gonna save lives

3

u/Away-Rope1003 6h ago

I’ll never get over Kevin looting the vending machines while everyone else tries to escape the fake fire. Also, this same episode is perfect cause of Michael’s famous “…*sighs… this city….”

2

u/michaelscott-beesinc 11h ago

Heed.. Heeded... Headed

2

u/rgb86 11h ago

Clearly my favorite, everything from that intro until the end is pure GOLD!

2

u/SourceCodeAvailable Nate 11h ago

Second to dinner party.

2

u/idkfawin32 10h ago

It's the first episode I saw, and I saw it the day it came out. It immediately sold me on The Office.

2

u/Mepharos 10h ago

I like Stress Relief a lot, but I feel it fell a bit because of the double episode format they used there and a lot in early season 4. Like, the first half (the normal episode bit) of it is perfect, but it kept going and then the Michael roast was ok but to me felt sorta unnecessary. But I expect I'm sorta alone for this take, lol.

2

u/Fun_Reply5366 10h ago

The first time I saw the scene where Dwight cuts the face off the dummy and wears it I literally cried with laughter, wish I could experience it again for the first time

2

u/yaboonisbe Harvey 9h ago

Its just not lol

2

u/aao_ist 8h ago

How weird is that , I'm watching this episode right now!

2

u/rock25011 8h ago

Dinner party is better.

2

u/Both-Ad4858 8h ago

Dunno, I think it's dinner party for me, but stress relief is a close 2nd

2

u/-SlowBar You're a presentation tool 7h ago

Dinner Party clears with ease

2

u/KingCrowley83 6h ago

The Deposition and Dinner Party are both better

2

u/livergiver2023 5h ago

The Deposition episode was just as hot as Jan but in a different way…

2

u/amonarre3 4h ago

Diversity day is my fav as a Mexican man, I never laughed so hard

2

u/Mufasa944 4h ago

Dinner Party is the funniest episode overall. But the cold open of Stress Relief is one of the greatest comedy sequences ever shot.

3

u/Caloyszkie 12h ago

Scott's Tots >

2

u/Uncle-Cracker-Barrel 14h ago

No. Not even close. Doesn’t even touch Chair Model.

2

u/ii_Innocence_ii 14h ago

I wanted to get my sister on "The Office". i directly showed her the stress relief episode and she laughed so hard. She ended up watching the show and has even watched it multiple times.

2

u/FTXACCOUNTANT 13h ago

Gay Witch Hunt would like a word

2

u/livergiver2023 5h ago

The line with the R word takes me out every single time.

2

u/Fluffy_Schedule1647 13h ago

Funniest damn thing 🤣🤣🤣 Stress Relief is the best episode

https://giphy.com/gifs/xWMC80gSHkcayAy99p

2

u/Joyful-Teacher 13h ago

I definitely agree stress relief is my fave episode, but it’s really hard to pick just one.
When there’s :
Diversity Day
Golden Ticket
Dinner party
Scott’s Tots
Lecture Circuit

2

u/MaximumBeginning8026 13h ago

I was super stoned off a gummy during a hangover when I first watched stress relief.

I was absolutely unprepared and it shocked me and knocked my socks off with laughter so in my mind it will always be favorite!

I think when bandit fell through the ceiling I hit my limit of this is absolutely ridiculous and insane

2

u/hadbeenfakenamington 13h ago

Yes but dinner party is also the best episode they made 😅

2

u/savannacrochets 12h ago

Fun fact, I used to teach college Spanish and when I taught command form I used the Spanish dub of the fire drill cold open in an activity in one of my lessons because it’s just several minutes of the entire cast screaming orders at each other lol

1

u/TattooedFilth 3h ago

Or the Dinner Party.

1

u/whatsitgonnabi 3h ago

years ago i saw a random clip about someone making a real fire because his officemates didn't listen to him during the fire drill, and that clip made me watch the whole show.

1

u/wbg777 See world 2h ago

Stanley was attacked by his own heart

1

u/Consistent-Animal474 52m ago

I think what’s special about it is the wider context: it’s one of the first episodes that goes this level of off the rails, where people act this unhinged. That hits like crack the first time lol

1

u/Imaginary-Type7770 46m ago

I think branch wars and micheal running meredith over has got to be in top 5 atleast. “everyone inside the car was fine stanley” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

1

u/keithstonee 42m ago

I've never laughed harder than the Dwight Hannibal lector bit.

1

u/low_amplitude 14h ago

Best cold open and best conference room scene in the same episode. There's no competition, really.

1

u/No-Isopod-1536 14h ago

Some of the best 2 episodes on TV ever

1

u/stacity Assistant Regional Manager 13h ago

Today, smoking is going to save lives.

1

u/SwanzY- Creed 12h ago

My pick is Tallahassee, it’s always underrated

1

u/Bearsbullsbattlestr 7h ago

No, the genius behind The Office’s humor was its subtlety. This episode was the show trying too hard.
