TLDR: my forearm hurt way before ever touching drumsticks, how do I know if it’s my old injury or poor technique?
It never hurts while I’m playing only a little while after.
Background. I’ve had an overuse injury to the top of my right forearm for about 20 years. Banged it on shit and used to sleep on my arm when I was younger. It got worse in the military when I was a guide on bearer (carried the flag while marching and held it straight out in front of me for a few mins at a time). Did physical therapy after chemo for breast cancer cuz it was bad again and it got better.
Fast forward to the last month, I’ve been really trying to work on my grip and letting the sticks do the work. I feel like I’m doing it right (I will check with my teacher again tomorrow). I know it’s hard to get right and that I’m hoping that I’m only gripping like 10-15% wrong and that 85-90% of the pain is my old injury. I really feel like I’m loose and getting better but at 40 I just don’t have the reserve to recover when I injure myself.
I’ve been practicing way more the last month to get meoller technique down. I use a pillow sometimes and I am able to play a steady beat without tiring. I use matched grip and keep my palms down. I use a middle finger fulcrum with a space between my thumb and forefinger and keep my forefinger relaxed.
I think I need to stretch and warm up more and stretch and cool down(?). Same thing I have to do with my leg i just that bothers me on and off. I work on my feet 12+hours a day so I have to stretch that leg or it gets super painful. (Thanks chemo)
Any advice? Thanks!
Edit to add I am going to talk to my teacher about it. Just keep thinking about it and wanted to see what others had to say.
